COVID-19 testing at Doctors Hospital

(CNS): Six more test samples for COVID-19 from a batch of 993 processed since Friday were positive, Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee reported Tuesday. All of the cases were picked up in the screening programme and acquired in the community. At this point none of these patients are symptomatic. Cayman has now tested 18,220 people and has a tally of 193 positive samples, though 123 people have already recovered.

With just one fatality since the outbreak of coronavirus in Cayman, of the remaining 69 active cases just two people are symptomatic, one of whom is currently in hospital.

Meanwhile, 441 people, including returning travellers, those who have been in contact with positive people and the current positive patients, are all in isolation either at government mandated facilities or in their own homes.

Given the number of tests now undertaken and the number of people currently known to have the virus, it is unlikely that the rising tally will set Cayman off course for the removal this weekend of many more of the restrictions that were imposed in an effort to curb the transmission.

Government will be holding a COVID-19 briefing tomorrow, when it will outline plans to drop the suppression measures to level two, removing many more social and economic barriers.

From the opening of contact services, such as dentists and hair salons, to the return of nannies, a number of restrictions are expected to be lifted as Cayman inches towards the removal of almost all suppression measures before the end of July.

The world is still learning about this virus, but it does seem that wearing masks has prevented transmission, possibly moreso than social physical distancing. We also know that most who die from it are either old, or vulnerable based on underlying illnesses.

How about we make it mandatory to wear masks everywhere outside of your home, lets just get on with accepting masks are now a thing. And also advise the elderly to stay home, set up support networks to bring them food, etc. And also advise the overweight and ill to avoid meeting up with strangers and to talk with their doctors.

and then open us up, including the borders for residents/2nd home owners, etc. Maybe not tourists just yet as we ease our way back. Oh, and the quarantine thing – we can do it at home.

So according to you senior citizens should not be allowed outside of their house. You will get old one day and the virus may still be around

OK so either all stay home OR the the seniors and sick?
        Whats the logical choice??
Lots of other countries require the seiners and sick to stay home as much as possible?

In every country where mask wearing had been the rule in enclosed public places the infection rate has been far lower.

The idiotic UK government has only just started requiring this and has the second highest death rate per million in Europe. Beaten only by Belgium.

Of course allow tested second home owners to return and spend money here. Of course allow them to self isolate in their own home provided they pay for someone to monitor them and get groceries for them.

Just to state some facts before the fear mongers and the Premier try to use this incident in NZ to stop us letting our residence to come home and demanding quarantine.

These two people where exempted of the 14 day quarantine for compassionate grounds BUT the NZ Government forgot to test them after as they where meant to do, If they had they would have found this.
NZ allows people to leave an isolation facility as long as they person has a plan on how to self isolate and is prepared to do testing and have check ups.

We on the other hand lock people up for 14 days IF we have room ( That is never available ) in a third rate hotel for a hefty cost.

And like states in Australia that have closed boarders even after 3 weeks of no cases one then shows up.
This virus is not going away and is out there there, not as bad as what we where all told.
There is 125 countries with a lower mortality rate than Cayman Islands and we only have had 1!

NZ had over 1500 cases and has proven the mortality rate is very very low.

I guess the had the very weak strain like Cayman and the other 125 countries right?

Certainly it is good news that we have a low percentage of positive results, but it clearly shows that the virus is still out there. Most of our cases have been asymptomatic, which is really a good thing. However, I fear that is causing some people in the community to become complacent. I have seen people gathering too close together, others not wearing masks, etc. We can’t afford to let our guard down. Look at what is happening in several US states over the past week or so. In Jacksonville a group of friends met up at a bar and all of them ended up infected with COVID-19 a few days later. In Cayman we must continue to reopen carefully and sensibly, and EVERY person needs to respect themselves and everyone else in Cayman by taking all precautions, all the time.

BUT….That group of friends either had mild symptoms or none at all, more like a mild flu. What does that tell us then?

16 of them none in hospital and some with no symptoms at all.

Again blah blah blah. 993 tested and 6 asymptomatic positives, blah blah blah.

Hypothetical continuation – Bureaucrats “well until we test each and every residents of the Cayman Islands and see that we have no more asymptomatic cases – that means we are not in the clear yet. Matter of fact with all the test kits that we have, we are strongly thinking that we will have to do a second set of testing for everyone.”

Bureaucrats “The most recent testing is disturbing – can you imagine we tested almost 1,000 people and had 6 asymptomatic positive. That means there could be hundreds and hundreds of more cases out there.”

Public “Unna get your heads out of your backsides, time to put Cayman back to work”.

CNS can you please ask the question why the quarry people have not been allowed to open back up in Little Cayman. Thought Little Cayman was in the all clear, but no signs of the workers at the quarry.

Do you realize you are pounding your fists for commercial diagnostic capability that doesn’t yet exist? We were one of the first to receive a small test batch of approved Roche test kits (maybe 200) that were supposed to start last week. Chill down man. Meanwhile we are literally #3 on the planet for PCR testing.

How can you have a plan when the coronavirus is totally out of control today in Florida? More than 2,600 new cases today.

Whether we like it or not anything we do has to be tied into what is happening in Florida, America’s gateway to the Cayman Islands.

Florida has nothing to do with us lifting all our local restrictions!

AND here is a fun fact for you…

0.35% of Cayman’s population has tested positive for this AND 0.33% of Florida’s population has tested positive. SO as you say out of control….where here or in Florida.

Give you a tip, big number look big but work them down to per cap. and not so scary at all. But wait we don’t want to do that as we like to keep people scared right?

Yep and Cayman’s per capita death rate from covid-19 is very high in comparison to many much larger countries.

        • Anonymous says:

The first number you need to start with is … the population of Florida. The next number you need to look at is … Demographics. Then recoveries. You are looking at this thing bass backwards. Great interview today by Cuomo on CNN who also had the virus. He interviewed three of sixteen friends who tested positive after visiting a night club in Florida. He could have interviewed any of the sixteen friends because they are all alive and well, as is he. Not everyone dies from this virus.
