that area haunted…it took victor and caldeen also…rip….i slow almost to hault going through deh!
The police in Cayman Brac rarely conduct late night road blocks checking for DUI. The only thing the police worry about is if someone is 5 mph over the limit going to work during the day.
No bar owner has ever been prosecuted for serving a customer who has obviously had too many drinks.
If they checked for DUI (even during the day) half the drivers would lose their licences. Including the ones driving govt vehicles to lunch.
Is there something wrong with Honda Fit drivers? Most of the ones i’ve seen recently are either seriously breaking road rules and or speeding or crashed. Did anyone notice on Saturday morning the Honda Fit that jumped the curb, and mowed down a signpost on Shamrock Rd. just East of the Red Bay Roundabout?
There are more Honda Fits on the road than any other car so it stands to reason that they will be involved in more accidents.
They’re also cheap and driven by young people who are more likely to drink and drive and/or text and drive or both which, in all honesty are the reasons for the vast majority of road deaths.
The vehicle accident death rate for Cayman Brac is statistically very alarming when compared to Grand Cayman. So far this year, Cayman Brac’s death rate figuring 2 fatalities, approaches 1 fatality per 1,000 population.
The rate in Grand Cayman, figuring four fatalities so far this year, is a bit under .06 per 1,000 population. This amounts to almost 17 times the number of fatalities per 1,000 population for Cayman Brac as compared to Grand Cayman.
Wow! Did you figure that out all by yourself?
So ? Most places have less-than-perfect drivers. Just worry about your own donkey.
Was this Honda Fit one of the hundreds on these islands subject to recall due to faulty airbags?
Not sure it was one with faulty air bag, but looking at the scene of accident it looks like a new light pole has been installed and the car is pretty well mashed up on its side against the building.
Feel bad for the Dad and Grandmother.
Didn’t have anything to do with the car. Had nothing to do with the speed zone. This was a good-hearted young man with everything in front of him who made a deadly choice.
It can challenge a person’s faith, wondering why God chooses this person, if he did.
“… He plants His footsteps in the sea….”
You are probably correct but one would hope that the police investigating the accident would review that possibility as well. Last year in GCM the majority of fatal accidents involved Honda Fits or other Hondas and were single vehicle accidents where the vehicle ran off the road and hit some obstacle.
Condolences to the grieving family of the young man.
They probably involve Honda Fits because every other car you see is a Honda Fit. I know – I drive one too and constantly feel I’m in a flotilla of Fits. But I haven’t had an accident in mine. Yet. The only problem it has – and it’s a left hand drive – is that there is a serious blind spot with the front side small windows. However, after the first near miss, you drive accordingly. Or maybe you don’t.
God doesn’t choose. Our free will makes our decisions.
Drivers in Grand Cayman fly by you at +70 & then you drift by them at the next traffic light, having done the speed limit your entire passage. I guess you just can’t fix stupid.
He wasn’t stupid, just young. We all did stupid shit that could have killed us when we were young…. if we lived, we did. He didn’t beat the odds, and his choices killed him, but he doesn’t deserve to be insulted, especially by you who didn’t known a damned thing about him.
Just as bad is when, after passing me like I am standing still, I catch up with them and have to wait behind them for them to get a break in traffic to make a right turn.
CNS this is the second fatal accident in the Brac. The first was valentine’s day.
CNS: You’re right. Apologies.
Not sure it’s the first. Sure there was one in Feb, sadly. One too many! Condolences to the family 💐
The Brac shouldn’t have any 40mph zones. And there should be speed bumps along all roads. The driving there is out of control. Where are these people going that they have to speed to travel less than 6 miles on most drives?
Speed limits don’t prevent people from
Speeding, they only give the Police the legal authority to issue speeding tickets. If someone is going to speed they will do so and a speed limit is not a deterrent. That said, we don’t know the cause of the accident so I suggest the armchair experts wait for the official investigation results.
Plenty of traffic running up and down all night. They go from one bar to the next. Then hang out at public beach southside or at scotts dock.
The usual crowd who are all well known do this – they are not out working, not out at Bible study, not helping an elderly or disabled person.
They just running up and down because they can – what else is their to do on Brac????
As for RCIPS. Said it before and will say it again – Chief Inspector Kay is the main problem over here. He is putting in his time, not proactive.
Fully agree with your comment about Chief Inspector Kay. They sent him to the Brac for a couple years of laying back before transitioning into retirement.
But when I think about it, we seem to always get someone who is about to retire or is just here to put in a couple years of time, away from all the hectic activity of Grand Cayman.
He has said as much — that he’s here to bide his time until retirement.
Brac get only temporary people in charge at RCIPS. One was sent here because his peers sued him, and — according to him — his superiors wanted to keep him under the radar. Another one had a wife who was a uniformed officer and decided she was going to tell everyone out here how to do their job. Hubby just sat back and watched her. Oh, and then there was the one who lasted just a couple of months, because he posted inappropriate comments on a teenage girl’s Facebook page.
Driving on Brac out of control? You should try driving in Grand Cayman – lol
Speed bumps are the height of stupidity! Everyone should not have to be punished even if they are NOT speeding!
Pot, meet kettle
Don’t be asinine!
By the way…… Have you ever driven on the Brac?
Serious question: Have you tried driving your entire day not exceeding 25 mph? No, you haven’t, and you wouldn’t. It’s much the same on the Brac. Although the distances are much less than Grand, the desire to get from one point to another are much the same.
Said another way: Imagine your commute with speed bumps. Yeah. That brings it home, no?
last Saturday it was a wedding at a church in Cotton Tree Bay, a van passed me doing about 60 mph. I was doing 38 mph in a 40 Mile zone, the church was just down road less than a 1/4 mile away in a 25 miles zone. They was speeding just to get there 15 seconds earlier. crazy. crazy people.
Are you some kind of nut??? That is the dumbest reply I’ve ever read concerning driving laws!……. or anything else here on the Cayman News Service! Why don’t you go somewhere that makes stupid laws where you can be famous!
Speed limit is 25 in that area. Just saying.
Speed limits are fake news in the Cayman Islands
