Neon lights at FIN fuel social media backlash

| 03/09/2021 | 232 Comments

(CNS): A luxury condo development on South Church Street that has been controversial since it started, given the size and scale of the development, environmental issues, the impact of the development work, fee and duty waivers and what residents in the area feel is an inappropriate project for the neighbourhood, has stirred up more public backlash with the installation of neon lights. After FIN Grand Cayman recently turned on its huge neon lights, which were installed last month, residents have taken to social media to express their outrage about the lighting, which objectors say are an eyesore.

Some are describing the lights, which stretch higher than the front of the five-storey building, as more akin to the lighting for a Las Vegas strip club than a luxury residence on Caribbean island in a quiet neighbourhood. For some residents, the neon lights are so bright they are now shining into their homes and causing serious light pollution.

Time to take action. Pass me that hammer.

It would be very interesting to have a list of individuals and company that have contracts on the units at this development. Until they close this is not public knowledge. I would like to see if any of the members of CPA board have have an interest in the project. Not making any accusations just curious to know. If not then disclosing the information would not effect those people and they should have objection to making it public.

How many planes will have to crash on approach before they are made to take it down?

With 7 mile beach gone now, might as well be Vegas south. Sweat not, next good storm will shred that abomination.

Sad…will make for a cool dive site sight in a few hundred years.
Sooner or later Earth will overcome the real pandemic that is humans. The monstrosity is just but a momentary blip in the grand scheme of things.

  6. Anonymous says:

These developers have their own mission and that is to turn Cayman into the Monaco of the Caribbean, while the bull run is strong and they have the chance. The question is, can/will anyone stop them?

  7. Say it like it is says:

The CPA alone has responsibility for this unbelievably crass “development”.No sane person properly qualified in planning would ever have approved this blot on the landscape, which begs the question, why was it approved?.The Premier’s new assistant who is well qualified in these matters should de directed to undertake a complete review of this project to ascertain who exactly is to blame for what has happened.

  8. Anonymous says:

Makes you wonder if that is actually a night-club in the penthouse ?

  9. Anonymous says:

This development is truly tasteless. Even if you are a fan of art deco design it is a complete eyesore and doesn’t fit in with the character of the neighbourhood. Ditto the Berksoy beach “palace”.

  10. Anonymous says:

Honestly this place needs to be bull dozed, it makes me so sad that something so horrendous has been allowed.

  11. Anonymous says:

It’s obvious the developers and architects have no taste

    stop.
have laws been broken? yes or no? end of story.

    • Anonymous says:

Thank you for your words of wisdom 10:33. We need more of these high end quality developments don’t we?
This whole give away and do whatever you feel like has to stop. I certainly hope the goverment steps in and makes the lights be taken off.
By the way CNS, who is the MP for the district that this development is in? They really need to step up and help their constituents.

      • Anonymous says:

Don’t like it? Pass laws and elect Ministers that will enforce them. Until the electorate makes it’s will known at the ballot box, this will all continue. So sad what has become of this beautiful island.

Who is the elected representative for this area?

I guess it depends on whether on not you think it is legally okay to change setbacks that have been put in place for a reason.

yawn…south sound nimby’s at it agian.
did the project recieve planning permission? yes
did people have the opprtunity to object? yes
    time to move on.

yawn… anonymous dismissive CNS commenter at it again.
The Caymanian people are sick of attitudes like yours and will be working to not only undo this travesty, but also ensure that more of the same does not happen.

      • Anonymous says:

Just a reminder that the developers are Caymanian and the CPA board that approved it was all Caymanian.

      • Anonymous says:

        nonsense..try addressing the questions?

      • Anonymous says:

Do you know that there are actually some multi generational Caymanians that have worked incredible hard to actually purchase units there for their families? More than they can say about those condos on seven mile beach…. So much for wanting some of your own people to have a piece of the pie…how about focus on bringing yourself and others up instead of talking about tearing things down. Have a great day!

        • Anon says:

@ 3:57 their money would have been better spent on another property – this thing is hideous and far too big for the site, area and road. Once again ‘Money doesn’t buy taste, personality, or common decency’ has been proven true.

      • Anonymous says:

yawn, yawn… I like how you attacked an ‘anonymous’ poster – but yet YOU are also ‘anonymous.” Typical Cayman logic. Thus why crap like this gets built.

    • Anonymous says:

Do you really need to see that catalogue of objection, that were ignored in the name of whoyoudaddyis again?

  14. Anonymous says:

Monstrosity! Hope a hurricane wipes it out!!!

  15. Anonymous says:

It does not make sense after the fact. Where were the massive backlash before the bloody building got the ground. Typical of the people here. It’s like as the hurricane approaches we make rapid presentation when along we had days, at least several days,to do so.

After the fact does not cut it.

    • Anonymous says:

There were numerous objections and input from DOE etc. all ignored by the developer/ construction CPA.

  16. Anonymous says:

The worst part is that since the investors did the project, they’ve now achieved residency

  17. Anonymous says:

will Fin stem a pivotal anarchist movement against its owners from those running fluorescent blue lights under their vehicles and below their boats at night humiliated by pulling into a percieved strip joint ? – possible, but we just don’t know

  18. Anonymous says:

I live in South Church Street and pass this abortion of a building every day to and from work. How something like this EVER got planning permission is bewildering. Totally out of keeping with the area. More suited to some tourist part of Miami. And the I can only imagine how the owners at Keisha felt when they saw this getting passed. But the only thing that matters here is the almighty $$$$. When you read the guff that the architect wrote on the FIN website. I laughed so much some wee came out!

  19. Anonymous says:

Everything about this development is wrong on so many levels. Just typifies what’s become of Grand Cayman.

  20. Anonymous says:

LOL! You guys have way too much time on your hands. Who cares?!?

    • Anonymous says:

The people who have neon light beaming in their house probs.

    • Anonymous says:

Obviously the people in the neighbourhood. Are you telling me they don’t count? Or is it just the accumulation of money for the developers that matters?

  21. Anonymous says:

How else are the rich people going to let Joe average know how much money they have? They have to shove something in your face.

  22. Anonymous says:

An EYE SORE. Would never use those architects and designers.

    • Anonymous says:

I do not believe they have a Trade and Business License. If true, they are not allowed to operate in Cayman. We have robust law enforcers, so they would not be able to design anything here.

  23. Anonymous says:

Who cares. Why is everyone angry over everything all the time?

    • Anonymous says:

People who are angry at this have a social conscience. The people who built this are all about $$ and have no connection to the island. The people who bought these are investors with no connection to the island.

      • Anonymous says:

There are some generational Caymanians who have purchased a condo at Fin. They have worked VERY HARD to be able to have an option to purchase such a place right on the water and near to town. The exterior may not be the taste of most people and yes, the lights seem to be unnecessary, but the interior is gorgeous, with a view of the Caribbean Sea as your backyard.

        • Anonymous says:

Exactly…. here we go again…. the loud minority is green with envy. It may not be everyone’s taste but FIN is here to stay. So do yourselves a favor and go find the next thing to be outraged about to keep your boring, uneventful lives occupied LOL

    • Anonymous says:

Because it is entirely out of keeping with the immediate surrounding area. They’ve made a mess of the public road. They’ve dumped waste materials into the sea. They’ve by-passed most planning laws probably with a few ‘promises’ and, personally, I think it looks trashy.

  24. Anonymous says:

Who the @#&$ approves these outrageous options, is my question?! These developers push the envelope as far as they are allowed, so who is caving in and approving these crappy requests? That is who needs to be strung up by the short and curlies.

  25. Anonymous says:

Kinda makes the Tides look tasteful. Well not quite. đŸ˜‚.

We should do an annual competition for the developers that awards the most tasteless, out of place, environment destroying monstrosity of the year. Lots to choose from. Voting to open soon.

  32. JTB says:

The new CPA is just as rotten. They just approved a similar monstrosity just south of Smith Cove for Ergun Berksoy, against planning department recommendations.

Thanks for all the meaningless guff about the environment and sustainable development, Wayne.

Insensitive Bastards. Milking the Island for all they can, while destroying it.

    • Anonymous says:

Are you talking about this development, or the elder Caymanians who started to sell out their country decade ago and will continue decades into the future. I laugh at all the negative comments that blame the developers and say little about the Caymanians who sold it.

  42. Anonymous says:

The former CPA board and decisions like this should be investigated.

  43. Anonymous says:

A disgraceful project that should never been approved based on the plans and final product. Has Mike Ryan paid the monies for his last project owed the government?

  44. Anonymous says:

Why do the Government keep giving duty free waivers to these millionaires and Caymanians has to pay. Its enough Hotels and condos in the Island now, if they want more they should have to pay full duties and all others expensives. Its only making more crime and traffic jams and importing cheap labour. NOT helping the average Caymanians

    • Anon says:

Meanwhile, schools (operating on already limited budgets) importing goods for fundraisers for the betterment of their students have to jump through hoops to have the same opportunity. Unlike the millionaire developers of these projects, the schools are not trying to get rich but are doing what they can for our future leaders and community.
