Premier Alden McLaughlin talks to Donna Bush about the budget on CIGTV

(CNS): The Unity Government will be presenting its final budget for this administration on Friday and it is expected to be a high spending one. Premier Alden McLaughlin said it will address a range of social issues over the two-year period that it covers. He said there will be additional provision for the vulnerable, education, security and roads. But he also said there will be a significant surplus again and that the budget complies with all of the requirements of the Public Management and Finance Law.

Speaking to CIGTV this week, he pointed out that, along with the money for roads, it will also provide finance for a transportation survey. McLaughlin had announced this in his Strategic Policy Statement in April. Given the stresses on the country’s infrastructure, with the growing population, the premier said there were significant challenges to address but he was going to put in place the foundations for longer term strategies to solve the traffic trouble.

The premier also spoke about the dump and the challenges that have surrounded getting the national waste management project off the ground. He said that people would soon see improvements there and that “Mount Trashmore will start to look like a grassy hill”.

The premier urged people to tune in to the government TV, Radio Cayman or watch the budget online, as he reminded the public that it is their money his government will be spending.

The opening of parliament for the Budget session will follow a ceremonial inspection of the RCIPS Guard-of-Honour by Governor Martyn Roper Friday morning. He will then deliver his first throne speech before the minister of finance delivers the technical budget plan and the premier the supporting policy statement.

Does anyone remember 2007-2009 when the PPM continued to spend and spend, could this be a repeat of that?

That is exactly what they are doing currently

They are starting multiple years long capital projects on what is increasingly obvious to anyone paying attention to be the brink of a serious global economic downturn
Just because projects are easy to campaign on for the next election

Anyone who thinks the PPM are actually responsible stewards of the public purse needs their heads examined
All of these projects are scheduled for completion at or around 2021 for a reason

Reminder the major financial institutions thought all was well up until they realized it was too late in 2007-08 financial crisis
The growth never looks like it will end until it does

When the recession hits and we spiral back into deficit spending I wonder if these MLAs will take another look at these expenses

CIG then defaults after a global recession.

Dart officially takes over, becomes King and appoints his Cabinet consisting of Sir Richard Branson and all of his friends who have invested, or pledge to invest, a minimum of $50 million into Cayman.

It’s already done in case anyone’s not paying attention to the neon signs.

Politics is the biggest load of crap foisted on the human race since men living in darkness tried to build a tower that reached the heavens.
Blind fools leading blind fools, ignorant and unaware that all decisions taken in the darkness will have the requisite consequences in the Light.
We were born free made in the image of our Creator. Why do we enslave one another with politics, money and religion?
This charade cannot continue much longer and it will just be a matter of time before the Creator steps in and sorts it out.
The funny thing is that although people claim to ignore it, deep down in their own souls, they know exactly where they stand with God.
There is no point arguing with yourself in the mirror. You know what is inside.

I really don’t understand this necessity to reference your God. Caymanians, and I am a caymanian (before the whole expat vs caymanian rubbish starts to fly around), love to reference ‘God’ and believe that God has everything planned out for us. God seems to hold your ability to voice your thoughts properly. Maybe he didn’t bless you well enough.

You have literally gotten no point across in your post. You make it very easy to dismiss you because you provided no value in your words and sound like nothing more than one of those mad men screaming that the end of the world is coming tomorrow.

You don’t like politics, wonderful. You didn’t need all of those words to say what you could have in 4. Perhaps there is more knowledge waiting for you outside of you bible.

5% cost of living increase to civil servants in 2020!!!!!

    BRIBE.

    5% is ludicrous.

Does this high spending include the hundreds of thousands the government will be ordered to pay in costs for the wholly unnecessary ‘gay marriage’ case, which could have been avoided if they had the courage to acknowledge what they and everyone else knew to be the law and enact a civil partnership provision?

Maybe Alden could be asked to pay those costs personally, since it was his refusal (as leader of government business) to bring in such a law, which led to those costs being incurred. He didn’t even have the courtesy to respond to Day and Bodden’s letter asking him to do so.

Capping with concrete, and then soil, eventually creates a (still dangerous) methane-filled grassy hill, with hopefully less vigorous leachate effluent. Whereas WTE consumes the pile, and would require additional feedstock to keep running – something on the economies of scale we can’t do with under 100,000 people without importing trash from elsewhere…maybe that’s the plan, and why we need a bigger cargo port? So much misinformation and secret dealing. Why can’t these guys just be honest?

Mining the existing Dump is the only way to go. No capping and no freaking Chernobyl with WtE.
21century recycling as they do it in Japan.

How does the Unity Cabinet propose to plug the USD$180,000,000 hole caused by the maturity of the Cayman Islands bond coming due in just DAYS with settlement by this 26th, without any new borrowing? How does that work? What crown assets are we gifting to DART this time?!? If that’s the miracle solution that’s coming, or something similar, then where is the procurement document for us to read? No takers from the local banks (which, of course, would be additional structured loan agreements).

    • $200 million plug for a $180 million hole? says:

Hmm. Could this be why DECCO is a partner in the Verdant Isle consortium? Could it be that Dart ends up owning the much ballyhooed cruise ship port? Maybe this is why government is pushing so hard for this port project?

their failure to control spending and manage the civil service properly will bankrupt cayman when the us economy slows.
the ppm bankrupted cayman in 2009…..they have not learnt anything from their reckless spending then,

You know that sleeping volcanoes often “look like a grassy hill”.
The problem is not how the Dump looks and beautifying won’t “fix” it.
Not a word on a public bus system.
Transportation survey was done so many times already that criminal investigation should be open on how the money were spent and why the reports are missing.
