Ex-top traffic cop fined $1,500 for drunken smash
(CNS): Adrian Barnett, a former head of the RCIPS Traffic Management Unit, was fined $1,500 and lost his licence for one year after he was sentenced this week in connection with his recent driving conviction. Barnett pleaded guilty last month to dangerous driving, driving while impaired and leaving the scene of an accident in relation to the collision on 10 June last year, when he crashed into the back of another vehicle on Shamrock Road and fled the scene, though he handed himself in two days after the smash.
A fourth charge of misleading the police laid against the former police inspector and traffic unit boss was dropped when he admitted to the driving offences, which happened while he was off duty.
The former inspector, who had led the TMU for several years, was placed on required leave following the incident. However, an RCIPS spokesperson confirmed that Barnett retired in December.
I have known that ‘man’ (and his wife) for over 20 years. A few weeks after Ivan he proposed a ‘side job’ to me saying how much money I could make because all of the wives left the island with the children and how he could set me up… I was deeply offended and never looked at him the same way again.
If he or any of my friends that I have told the story over the years reads this, they will know who I am.

Poor example from someone who should know better. Do as I say not as I do mentality. Certainly not the type of behavior you want to write home about.
Adrian, these things too shall pass. We live in place that have more churches per capita than most, but we have lost the milk of human kindness. We are all humans and in the end prone to human frailties. As in most cases all the positive things you did as an officer is over shadowed by one act of indecision. Don’t view us as harshly as we judge you.

The Police Officers shouldn’t be the only ones held to higher standard , we too . DRINKING and DRIVING is wrong for anyone to do , alcohol impairs your ability to make sound decisions while driving or in anything else you do while being under the influence of alcohol .
Look at every Country around the world alcohol is legal , and every Country has it’s own Laws , and the penalty are about the same .
If we /everyone obeyed the Laws we wouldn’t be killing ourselves and our friends or anyone else under the influence of alcohol .
Not that I condone this behaviour, but Adrian is not a murderer, a robber, rapist or paedophile. Did he make a stupid mistake?…. without a doubt! He’s a human being the same as everyone else on this earth and human beings make mistakes. So, he who has not sinned, cast the first stone. Some of you may say “he’s a Police Officer who should set an example” and to some extent you may be right. However, does that excuse all the other violators on this island because they are not Police Officers…….certainly not! I can assure you, he is not the only one on this island holding a comparable post to be driving under the influence. He has paid heavily for this mistake, it’s time now to put it to rest.
He ran away and hid. That part went wholly unpunished by the court. His coincidental early retirement decision should not have been construed as an extra punishment at judge’s sentencing. He should have been fired immediately in any case.

I had a DUI here years back. I was suspended for 15 months but got 2 knocked off for doing that class. I always pled guilty and I didn’t (thankfully) smash into anyone or wreck at all! Just got pulled over and rightfully arrested. This guy was a high up cop, smashed into someone and left the scene of a crime and only got 1 year! WTF Cayman! That should be a 2 year ban immediately.
Well, he is from the UK, lucky he got charged after 3 days hiding to get the liquor out of his system. Would the shoe fit on the same foot of a local policeman? I don’t think so.
The courts set precedents for certain people, sure time for a change in that place.

Worth noting that a 12mo disqualification, and fine of $1500 are minimum penalties for any first time DUI and fully discounts the sneaky post crash AWOL and deceit that occurred in this situation. There doesn’t appear to have been any alcohol treatment ordered. Disproportionate leniency lime this in a case where the perpetrator should have been held to a higher standard. Further evidence that double standards still prevalent in the Cayman Islands judiciary.
This just show that being honest in Cayman don’t pay . How many other Civil Servants in the past has been this honest ? He didn’t get years of pay . He had a right to drink after putting up with all the traffic problems for all those years .
