Screams fail to stop stocking-faced robber

| 30/06/2017 | 51 Comments

(CNS): Despite the repeated screams from a woman who was robbed on her doorstep in Cumber Avenue, Bodden Town, Thursday night by a man wearing a stocking over his head, no one came to her assistance. Police said 911 calls were placed by people who heard her at around 9:30pm, but the attack lasted several minutes as the robber cut a back-pack the woman was carrying from her body with the knife.

The police said that the armed man emerged from near the stairwell as the victim arrived at her apartment’s front door.

Although she screamed and struggled with the stocking-faced robber, he took her bag and fled to the rear of the property. The woman was treated and later released from the hospital.

She described her attacker as about 5’5” tall, of slim build, a dark brown complexion with a longish face and brown-coloured hair, who appeared to be in his early 30’s.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Bodden Town Police Station at 949-4222.  Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

Its going to get worse before it gets better. I was living in Treasure Islands 5 years ago when they were renting to locals . In three months they had 3 major incidents. One night a boy was trying to rob a condo next door to Treasure Islands and he climbed 4 stories . He kept trying to find an open sliding door to escape the police that were called. Bam ,they caught him because an English woman and her 2 children pointed at him. A few nights later a foreign woman was screaming the whole complex . By the time I put on my pants a security guard and his friend caught a foreigner and had him tie up and waiting for police. I mean a week later a drunk nude man knocked on doors on my floor asking if anyone wanted assistance? Fiday that week a woman kicked out her boyfriend and made him walk then sobered up and came to look for him which caused screaming and arguing for about an hour.
Well I closed my porch door and turn on some music and finally went someplace. else to live were it was safe and quiet.

This kind of disgusting behavior by human is unacceptable, despicable inhumane, wild animals would have done better, for this Lady to be robbed at the stair case in an apartment complex at a time that most people would be home, and she screams to the top of her voice , and no one hears or comes to her rescue.

Do we know that if about 2 or 3 people had went out an beat F out him and called the police , that he the criminal would have got the message to not F around this apt complex because the residents would and is protecting themselves.

We shouldn’t let the criminals intimidate us because if we do pretty soon we would not be able to go outside of the house.

It surely looks like people are going to have to take matters in their own hands but the call is yours, I can still sleep all night with my Windows open just like the good old days.

I have a switchblade which I am told is illegal. If I used it to help this woman, the criminal would gone clear and all the focus would be on me and my blade. Remember when Mr Bowen shot that rass trying to burglarise his house? He was hounded out of the island for a while by the police/human rights people.

If this robber was from the district in the immediate area, the victim would have recognized him. This was well planned by someone who know her movements and where she live. No one can be blamed for not going out to assist. They may have gotten killed.

It was planned. He was hiding out at her residence waiting for her. He knew what was in her bag, and wanted nothing more. He had a knife, and could have stabbed her if he wanted to.

You can blame anyone for not doing more than calling the police. The police and the politicians can’t protect the innocent law abiding citizens of this country and they refuse to allow the innocent law abiding citizens of this country to protect themselves.

How are we going to come to the aid of our neighbors or who ever, when we are disarmed and told by Baines that the “POLICE IS HERE TO PROTECT YOU” what a joke – why was the police not there to protect her, fact: now all we can do to help each other is call 911. What a mess has been created on us. I hope she is ok.

We are at the mercy of these criminals, with nowhere to turn.

I think that this incident and all off the crime leaves the Government no other choice but to start making and changing gun Laws in the Cayman islands.

Criminals knows that they have the advantage over their victims, when they know that they can carry an illegal gun, but the victim can’t carry a legal gun.

I know that they think 100 times before if they tried robbing me .

    Welcome to the new Cayman.

People who don’t want to know or assist their neighbours. People who rather record wrongdoing on their mobile phones and share it with friends but will not provide footage to the police.

We reap what we sow people.

We need to the the change we want to see.

There is no way any smart person was coming outside. It happened in a residential area. If you try to play hero in a situation like that, it won’t be long before the robber finds your house after monitoring your movements, then come for his or her revenge.

Plus, it was too dark to tell if he had a knife.

Nobody can hear a scream over the culturally enriching bass pounding music. That is diversity, you are racists if you try to change it.

So let the crimes continue until it becomes evident that your affinity for gang culture and your secret desire to turn Cayman into little Jamaican or little Honduras or little Haiti is at the root of why crime is spreading.

At least you can virtue signal to all your colleague of how tolerant you are while Cayman goes to hell in a hand basket.

It is a very difficult decision for anyone in this situation, but to not even bother to try and assist this poor lady?? This victim could have been a child being murdered! Are we all going to hide in our homes and leave this happen? Granted the public are not armed (well a lot are it seems) it is human nature, hopefully, to gather together and see what’s going on outside with these “screams.” It could be one of you next. Yes, people rang 911 but that takes time for the Police to arrive and that lady could have died. I can assure you if a few of you went to the assistance of this poor lady that lone attacker would have run off. Let’s help each other residents. Let’s try and rid this island of the scum that’s currently taking over our lives. Frightening us in our own homes. Let’s not leave these excuse for human beings win. The crime rate in Cayman is escalating by the day from petty thefts to major crimes. It’s not a place that any tourist is going to want to visit before long and then all business’ will certainly feel the impact. This in turn will affect everyone.

It seems really unfair to say that no one helped her if in fact 911 calls were made. Did the police want other innocent people to get hurt?

As mentioned previously, what is needed is to send a few derelicts (those who commit robberies, murder, aggravated assaults, traffic hard drugs, and/or repeat offenders of lesser crimes, etc.) to some far off land never to return again. Some place in Africa is not too far and a very good start. The message will be clear.

Jobs?! Who in their right mind would employ and be able to trust someone with such capacity for evil? An organized criminal gang, perhaps.

Where in this story and the others like it can we possibly interpret that such violent people are willing to help themselves develop critical skills, gain legitimate employment, and contribute to the country’s prosperity?

So it’s implied that the people who called 911 failed to adequately assist the victim… what exactly would the RCIPS have unarmed members of the public do in this situation? Just this week we were all being warned not to open our doors to robbers pretending to be victims of domestic abuse to gain entry into homes. Just wondering exactly what the RCIPS expects the public to do in this kind of situation since they seem to be sending contradictory messages.

    • Anonymous says:

There is no contradictory message. No one came to her aid, and that’s where they stopped with their story. It was not suggested that anyone should have come out and be a hero.

CNS – please help this reader understand that your team wrote this story, not the RCIPS.

The implication he/she mentions is all yours to own. In these times we really don’t need a media working against law enforcement.

CNS: The RCIPS reports states (verbatim): “During the course of the struggle, which lasted several minutes, the woman screamed repeatedly, but no one in the area came to her assistance, although 9-1-1 calls were made.” I have no idea why you think we’re working against the police.

I know and no condemnation there. But I can’t help but hang my head in shame and disrepair. This is how far we have fallen. No one will come to your aid. I don’t know that I would have done differently but I can only hope so.

    • Anonymous says:

Yes, but the problem here is not the cops, it’s social media. The viral scare message sent around on Thursday, leading people to think that you shouldn’t help a woman screaming because she might be part of a “robbery ring”, which has since been debunked, has now lead us NOT to help a neighbor who is screaming bloody murder a few feet away. At least if someone else had come out and yelled at the guy he might have run off sooner, who knows? So, we have someone who has used social media to put out a scare message, even with the best of intentions, but which nonetheless was WRONG, which has led to an environment where we don’t help each other. People need to be MORE RESPONSIBLE with the messages they put out and send around. The police debunked the message, which was very vague, within a day, but by then the damage has been done. We need to be more responsible. THINK before putting out scare messages. There’s at least one “local activist” who should listen carefully to these words.

You pick up something heavy or sharp and get outside, at the very least you are a witness. Ask yourself this, would you want someone to help you? If you answer yes then you’ve got to do the same. Sometimes just being there is enough to scare them off and the more people the better.

{5:21} Samething I said the people who called 911 did their job they could not go after the robber without being armed – the Police are the ones who would take care of this!!! The robber can make fake screams too!!

Round up all those people here on work permits without a Job. Just a few weeks ago in the same area a man approaches a person and ask them to sign a paper saying he works for them and that she/he is paying them each week a certain amount of money. These people have to eat and pay rent to remain here and they cannot do this without a job or robbing others
