The Pro-Development vs Pro-Caymanian battle
Johann Moxam writes: Fellow Caymanians: Understand who owns or sponsors the candidates, politicians and political party. This is about big business, control and making good on lots of expensive promises in exchange for campaign funds. When in doubt, follow the money. Remember hearing on the campaign trail about “special interests”? They are directly involved in what has occurred post elections on 14 April 2021. The people and entities who funded the PPM campaign with their millions cannot sit by and allow control to go to a duly elected set of “independents” who have their own set of donors.
There are individuals and corporate entities plus an entire sector of the business community that view the PACT led by Mr Panton and Mr Saunders as too “pro-Caymanian”, which they deem to be anti-development or bad for economy growth. The rhetoric and venom is toxic and unnecessary. The people have spoken. It should be respected.
This is now a battle of the special interests groups: Pro-Development vs Pro-Caymanian that want a balance to address the inequality.
The solution is to find the balance that is best for Cayman. However, the special interests groups that are battling for control are determined to get their “Return on Investment” given their sponsorship of campaigns and ownership of candidates.
For them it is a battle they cannot afford to lose.

Could it be that Caymanians want a Cayman First policy from government?
In terms of overdevelopment, I urge people to go and find every development currently in progress. You will be shocked, especially if you -/+ 2 years.
One of the many problems is that we are putting development in front of infrastructure. How a government cannot come together and address these problems is beyond me.
Cayman is no longer a quiet island in paradise.
It is a small island transitioning to a concrete jungle, where quiet and natural views are nonexistent along with any type of affordability.
Whoever and whatever happens in politics, at the very least, we should be thankful for a change that might progress us forward into the mindset of sustainability.
Johan. Maybe had you spent more time talking “with” people instead of “lecturing” them you would be in a different spot today. Just sayin.
Your wrong! Development is Caymanian always has and always will be. Its the only real product Cayman has ever had.
I can assure you, none of these luxury condos and 5 star hotels are being built for Caymanians. Get your head out of your behind and wake up!

I’d like to see the most capable MP’s run the islands not any one faction, which IMO would be Alden, McTaggart, Wayne, Andre, Joey and would have been Johann and Miller too. The simple fact is we face external, existential threats that need MP’s with brains and experience. Traffic and beach access can be dealt with by any idiot, the financial sector and pandemic should not.
These guys need to put aside their differences and work together for Cayman.

This is a true story by Mr. Moxam. When you do not know, that is just it – you DO NOT know. You don’t know until you know. Solid campaigns are quite expensive to run, but the money goes where you cannot see it.
He is right – THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of dollars are pumped from big businesses to these groups with an expectation of an even bigger bottom line for them.
I, along with other like-minded Caymanians, are looking to secure a future for their loved ones and you should too.
Kudos to Mr. Moxam for putting himself out there to fight for us Caymanians and be subjected to all the public scrutiny that comes with this profession.
FYI, I am not anti-PPM, nor a GTN voter. I am a qualified, ambitious, generational Caymanian with solid employment.
When you have an electoral system where someone is elected with a few hundred votes and they can hold the balance of power, it seems almost inevitable that vote-buying can take place and special interests rule.

Ripping up every bit of island to build unaffordable homes. Blocking access to the beach. More cars on the road creating more traffic. Want any more?
I would add that these downsides are arising with little to no meaningful participation by the Caymanian people. No jobs, no training, no business ownership, no benefits. Just hoards of imported (often minimum wage) workers, with locals relegated to the sidelines.
You find me an unemployed qualified Caymanian engineer, architect, General contractor, project manager, electrician, plumber, carpenter, hvac tech or handyman right now… Good luck
Lots of them. All driven out of their industries. You show me a major development in Cayman in fact designed by a local architectural firm, for example.
BEFORE development should be the development of the infrastructure to pave the way/handle it. None of that has been done and now we’re stuck in traffic all day long. The herculean task of doing it now (even just fixing the untenable situation as it is), after the fact, will be painful to everyone.

Explaining something is the easy part. Understanding something is the one thing we can’t do for the ignorant. No one person can. Caymanians in charge use this logic to grow their own power over the ignorant. It’s not hard, It’s not expensive, and it works every time. This is the reason that Caymanian education is not a issue that any Leader has solved but all of them have stated that they are trying and that is all they need to do. It will never change for Caymanians. Never. Caymanians will never get ahead of their own culture. Too bad.

I hate what’s going on too, but I’m not blindly blaming some dark force.
Development is neither pro-Caymanian nor anti-Caymanian. People have differing views on what is the best type of development, best rate for that development, and the best location for development. Other Caymanians do not share your perspective or your priorities. That does not make them bad or bought and it does not mean that you lost because of some conspiracy.

There ought to be a like button for different levels of commentary. If that was the case, you would get top marks from me. Some people are just too loose with their lips. Critical thinking seems to be in short supply around here. The thing is, many of the people who are making these silly noises actually impressed for future offices, but after these recent developments? Not so much.

I agree, but Mr. Moxam is also only one vote. The electorate is woefully uninformed and uneducated about such matters; or simply doesn’t care as their hand is open to accepting ‘paper encouragements.’
After the appalling antics of several of the candidates up for re-election, it is very telling that they were in fact re-elected.
Cayman has been selling it’s soul for decades and no, it will not change.

Well maybe the Caymanians that are affiliated with these special interests should start stating names, but we know very well that won’t happen. They just don’t have the guts to. If we as Caymanians don’t start speaking up now and for our future generations who will? Sad to say but if Cayman continues to go down this track we will loose a lot. Tourism will fail, our people will fail and Caymanians won’t be able to live in Cayman anymore and will have to run/relocate else where.
The people voted individually for the candidates that they thought would best represent them. This election was not a referendum on the pace of development.

As a Brit and Caymanian status-holder who has been lucky enough to call Wayne my friend for over 2 decades, describing him as pro-Caymanian – as if this somehow makes him anti expat – is in my opinion off the mark. He is pro-Cayman. And is very much not in this for the money.
This is sadly similar to the ‘they stole the election’ campaign from the US a few months ago that also had no basis in fact. So far for all of the social media ranting, no one has provided any evidence that anything nefarious happened or that anybody was ‘bought’. I get that the writer is disappointed with the election outcome but before this situation deteriorates further I would ask that he and anyone else that feels wronged to please provide evidence capable of dispassionate assessment.
