Opposition asking ministers key policy questions
(CNS): Members of the PPM have filed eleven parliamentary questions for ministers to answer during next week’s meeting on a number of key policy issues that the government has failed to address for many months. Many of the questions reflect topics regularly queried by the public, such as the outcome of the consultant’s report on public transport and the status of the referendum bill on gambling and ganja.
The majority of questions are being asked by Deputy Opposition Leader Joey Hew MP (GTN). These include: What is happening about the much-needed review of the National Development Plan? When will the Deloitte report on public transport be made public? What plans, if any, does the government have for replenishing Seven Mile Beach? And What has happened regarding a policy to deal with beach vendors? He is also asking for an update on repairs to district roads in each constituency.
Former premier Sir Alden McLaughlin (RED) is asking one of the most topical questions for the week: What has happened to his private member’s motion relating to private schools and their use of school buses?
As students returned to school this month, the traffic congestion has also returned in earnest after the summer holiday reprieve. The CIG accepted the proposal back in April when McLaughlin had argued it would get thousands of cars off the road and was one of the easiest of the many solutions to Grand Cayman’s traffic problems currently under discussion that could make an immediate difference.
Since then, Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly has given no indication as to whether or not she has opened discussions with the private schools, which have been reluctant to get their own buses because of costs.
McLaughlin has also filed two further questions, both related to the proposed gambling and ganja referendum. MPs debated the idea last December, and although the government accepted the motion, it has yet to present a bill for public consultation as it had said would be the case.
Opposition Leader Roy McTaggart has filed three questions: What has happened to the health minister’s proposal to separate the Public Health Department from the Health Services Authority? What are the CIG’s plans to deal with burial provisions? And what is the situation regarding the amount of illegal opioids coming into Cayman, especially fentanyl?
Customs and Border Control Director Charles Clifford the director of customs recently told CNS that the Class A narcotic is giving cause for concern.
He said that although only relatively small amounts have been seized so far, the fact that his officers had recovered the drug even rarely indicates there is more on the street. While the drug is by no means commonly smuggled yet, it is something his agency is paying close attention to, he said.

Cayman needs competition legislation. Following the ALT deal which should’ve been blocked, the raw materials needed to build a house now have no upper price limit as the timber market is now pure monopoly.
Meanwhile parliament can apparently only see it fit to meet 3 times in nine months.
List of other unresolved issues:
-Mount trashmore deal still not done;
-no proper public transport system like in Jersey or Bermuda;
– CIREBA is a price fixing cartel, all realtors should have access to the MLS system including non-CIREBA realtors; and
-SMB erosion.
We urgently need Andre Ebanks as next premier to address the above matters. No one works harder than him. PACT is not fit for purpose.

will you begin a petition or Motion to allow people with property bank loans to start to build small, and even live on their land ..even as they pay for the land?
It takes years to first pay off the land, then get a house loan for decades longer?!
As well as bussing all school kids, another obvious solution to traffic, is work from home. Many can’t, and many prefer to go to an office but I would bet 50% of office workers could work from home. It is now very common in Europe and works well. An added bonus is a reduction in our carbon footprint.
Public Question:
Why dont MPs require banks to allow locals to build on land once they are still held by bank loans? And while its being paid off?!
This would reduce the time spent renting and paying for bqnk simultaneously.
Typical political hypocrisy. Do nothing while in power, then complain when the next govt does nothing as well. None of these “career politicians” believe in doing anything worthwhile unless it increases their chances of re-election. Shame on them all.

Talk is cheap the reality is PPM can never be trusted again when you understand their track record as a government. Selling out Caymanians and these islands is their primary objective that made many of their cabinet ministers rich along with the bag men and key supporters.
Roy has never been the leader of the party. They are using him poor man should just retire before he embarrasses himself anymore
The progressives are screwed if Joey Who is the great hope to become their party leader.
Poor Roy McTaggart cannot see that he is about to get replaced by his unqualified deputy that has less formal qualifications and education than Big Mac. While Alden pulls all the strings from a bar stool in Breakers.
Joey had two full terms with the PPM. Only thing that they have done since the powerchange in the Government, is to make noise and no valuable contributions to good governance.
Oh, and become richer at the expense of the people of Cayman.
We must never forget all the lucrative concession packages that were negotiated by him for his friends in construction & development particularly the wealth developers and real estate barons that sponsored him and the PPM heavily during the last elections.
Does Mr. Hew have a pecuniary interest in any businesses that service those development projects, hotels, Camana Bay that received favorable deals from the PPM?
Were these interests formally disclosed prior to him voting in Cabinet as the former Minister of Planning & Commerce to grant these concessions and sweet deals to his friends and business associates?
Did the former Minister of Finance agree to these deals knowing of the potential and in some cases clear conflicts?
Does the Standards in Public life provision apply to the PPM given all the sweet secret deals that were negotiated and signed them during their tenure in power from 2013-2021?
When in doubt “follow the money”
Thought provoking questions that deserve proper answers from PPM and former minister MP Joey Hew.
They will continue to sell us out to dart and all wealthy developers building the country for their rich friends, more foreigners and increasing the divide between the have and the have nots. That is how the ppm govern the country McTaggart, Hew, McLaughlin and that lot do not know any other way. They will do so again if the people are crazy enough to vote them back as the government. The ppm leopards cannot change what they are and how they operate.
Ask Joey where the bike lanes from 2015 NRA Plan and subsequent budgets went…

She would have promised to perform a twerking routine on the steps of the LA wearing nothing but a tutu skirt if she thought it would have helped her political expediencies.

Agree with you that it was a promise, however Julie was never a PACT member, nor, really, a PPM member. Julie goes wherever the wind blows that benefits her. That means, ironically, that she is probably one of the only true independents, and therefore not to be ever trusted by anyone outside of her own personal church.
Change the district voting to all island one district so we may outvote Sabrina, Jon Jon and Kenny

I don’t believe in one man, one vote either but i think it would be simpler for us to return to the old system of voting rather than an all island vote..
An update on district roads? Here’s one, they are busy widening the heavily congested Queen’s Highway.

They arent widening the road. They are simply adding a flat area of sorts next to the road in areas where they aren’t any. Some parts of the road are dangerous because right at the edge the ground falls steeply. It will be safer to have a flat area built up in those parts for all the people who can’t seem to keep their cars on the road and keep driving into light poles. But the road itself isn’t being widened, its just a safety measure.
