COVID takes younger, healthier victims

(CNS): Nine people who were positive for COVID-19 have now died, and unconfirmed information trickling into the public domain via social media, together with revelations made in Parliament suggest that at least three unvaccinated people under the age of 60 with no previous serious health conditions have now succumbed to COVID.

Another two people died over the weekend, including one unvaccinated woman who was only 48 years old. There are currently 15 people admitted to hospital who have tested positive for COVID-19 but no other details have been released by officials about those patients.

As of 8am Monday there were still a significant number of people with SARS-CoV-2 in Cayman after another 127 people tested positive over the weekend, including two travellers.

There are currently 3,656 active cases, eleven of them on Cayman Brac, though there were no new reported cases over the weekend on the Sister Islands. 4,309 people are presently in isolation or quarantine.

According to Public Health figures on vaccinations, as at 8am Monday, 6 December, 58,273 people (82% of the population) have had at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine and 56,311 individuals (79%) have completed the two-dose course. 12,522 people (18%) have received a third or booster shot.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday night, Premier Wayne Panton defended the PACT Government’s management of the pandemic following criticism from the opposition and reassured the community that they were being cautious and not mismanaging the situation.

He pointed out, once again, that the advisors who were guiding PACT were the same ones who had helped the previous administration, and the government was focused on protecting lives and livelihoods. He said PACT was not taking unnecessary chances and the community outbreak likely happened because of people breaching quarantine due to complacency after being so long without the virus.

Panton also said that many of the challenges surrounding Travel Cayman and Public Health were being ironed out as the government works through the reopening phases.

The premier denied any negligence and promised that the government would remain cautious and continue to monitor the situation.

He revealed that one of the first cases of what has been described as a real COVID death, which is someone who would not have died if they had not been infected, was his aunt. He said she had not been vaccinated, despite his best efforts to persuade her to do so, as well as the efforts of her family, and he urged people to get vaccinated.

  1. WTF says:

Wayne please stop blaming the community spread on complacency of the people! You and your government implemented a five day quarantine with NO tracking device…did you think that suddenly people would not breach quarantine? They were breaching when they had a tracking device!!! so what da hell were you thinking they would do without one?!?! Man up and take responsibility…the community spread and resulting mess happened on your watch – YOU have mishandled the entire situation with your so called “Plan”. Please hush ya mouth about “complacency” and own your mess!

  2. Anonymous says:

Yes Wayne; we all know that the advisors of PACT were also the advisers to the previous Government. But Wayne needs to come to terms with is that it takes a certain kind of Leader to figure out what parts of that advice is best for the Country and what needs to be put aside; it takes a certain kind of Leader to have the backbone to say “no” to that advice where necessary; and it takes a certain kind of Leader to lead!! Don’t think I need to say more than that!

The only number that matters is deaths among the vaccinated. Life cannot be put on hold for the stupid or Fox News viewers, two groups that heavily intersect.

Gov’t seemed to skip right over the weekend numbers.

Some of us are interested in that sort of thing.

Cases are falling which is good but still important not to miss 3 days of data.

I went for my booster in Camana Bay today, as expected 200 plus people queuing early before it opened, largely expats and educated caymanians. But behind me was one guy coming for his first dose (Jamaican construction worker), I could hear him explaining to the woman as he got his form, – was shocked there are people here in first dose. then when we got to the door he left. Scared. I persuaded him to come back and he got it in the end. So sad… people are scared of a harmless vaccine and will die young and healthy as a result. Glad this one will live long, but we will have many more deaths in cayman. All because they wouldn’t take a Pfizer jab as harmless as an Advil tablet.

Mr Premier make it mandatory for all indoor workers civic service and private businesses,to wear their face masks, and to get vaccined and no eating/drinking while they are checking out customers. In the Brac they do it all time. Whats being done about the expats that wont take the Vaccine?, is their work permit being taking away and being sent home ?

You just disclosed the reason why the information was not provided: The information likely doesn’t support the common narrative.

Not that it matters, at least to those who are still trying — against all odds — to pull together with ALL peoples of the Cayman Islands.

Because that data is concerning namely younger victims with limited to no pre-conditions. This would take away the arguments that many silly people use.

It would add fuel to the fire for those concerned about the reopening.

And it makes me sick to hear “He pointed out, once again, that the advisors who were guiding PACT were the same ones who had helped the previous administration”. A plan is a plan is a plan BUT EXECUTION IS EVERYTHING!!!

It’s like sending John John into a ring with a “PLAN” and his opponent has the same “PLAN” but he is Mike Tyson. Now THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME PLAN is one better equiped to execute the plan better?? So its a silly statement.

Social distancing is not enforced, crowded xmas parties are in full swing. We are creating the right environment for break through cases.

    • Anonymous says:

The whole point of the vaccinations is that we can get back to normal and do these things. We can’t social distance and mask up forever!

      • Anonymous says:

You’re missing the whole point of management of a global pandemic with a mutating virus. Vaccinations alone are ineffective without the other scientifically proven measures such as masks, social distancing, good hygiene, and isolations and limits on capacities. The normal you desire is gone, and the future of a return to anything close to it with this “let’s get back to it” thought process excluding all of the measures to protect people is a fantasy.

        • Beaumont Zodecloun says:

Agree. “Normal” is toast. That doesn’t mean that we can’t collectively create something much, much better.

NO NO NO. Damn I hate when silly people lower our collective IQ with these kinds of comments.

Ok. Do you know that even if you are vaccinated that you can still catch Covid?

Do you know that you can still pass it on?

Do you know that everytime Covid passes from one host to anther it has a chance to mutate?

Do you know you can catch Covid more than once?

Do you know you can catch the various variants of covid also?

Do you realise you can, by your stupid actions, actually cause someone’s death?

Vaccinations are not your greenlight to “get back to normal”. It’s your effort to stay out of a grave.

There are two core things getting a vaccination does:

        1. Lowers your chance of catching covid by 90% or greater.
        2. Lowers your chance after catching covid of you becoming seriously ill or dying.

        Beyond this…

People who are vaccinated tend to loose virus load faster than unvaccinated means you become cleaner quicker.

Also, you will have more resistance to other strains of the virus as they share many of the same traits.

FINAL NOTE: No vaccine in the history of man was ever 100%. The only 100% with this is locking yourself away from everyone until you die. We can only do the things we can like washing hands, wearing a mask and getting vaccinated to MITIGATE the risk.

    • Yak says:

You aren’t happy with making your own choice. Nope. That’s not enough for the likes of you. In the wee hours, you are scared of your choice and desperately want to force everyone else to be in the same boat.

I bet you’re another armchair expert that believes they can competently ‘research’ medical and other scientific data without the slightest idea of what they are looking at.
The basic knowledge is out there for all to see, we don’t need swivel eyed conspiracy theorists with nothing more than a high school basic education, (if that) telling the rest of us that the science is wrong.
Vaccines work, there is far too much evidence out there now to dispute the fact that they prevent serious illness and death in the vast majority of the worlds population.
Deny it all you like, but objective scientific fact beats subjective opinion everytime.
Personally, I couldn’t give a damn whether you have the jab or not, it’s your choice and I have my protection. But don’t think you can take my freedom to live my life because you want to hide behind lockdowns and other punitive measures to avoid being vaccinated.
COVID is here to stay, if you want to hide, do it on your time, otherwise learn to live with it and stop being so bitter.

          • watcher says:

Anything one person can learn and understand, another can learn and understand if they have the will and perseverance to do so. Have you had the will, or just parroted talking points? I hope you have actually delved deeply into real medical reports. I suggest the Lancet as a starting point. That will carry you quite a distance.

Unlike you, I am not an expert. I am an independent thinker.

At the risk of sounding like an asshole, I will tell you that I don’t give a shit about your freedom. It is in your control, not mine. Nothing I can or will do will influence it. You have to have the stones to steer your own ship.

I am not hiding. I am fully vaccinated. I can’t stand people who persecute others based upon their opinions, rather than genuine research. I live as I want to.

      2. Cayman is now cooling and our flu season setting in.
      3. Omicron now all about the US and is almost twice as infectious as Delta.
      4. Christmas parties and family gatherings about to start.
      5. More tourist will be coming in with Covid who will walk right into Cayman.
      6. Yeah Cruiseship arrival. Covid of the Seas docs on Dec 28th

On the subject of Covid, bars and Christmas parties:

“Most striking, however, has been the outbreak linked to a Christmas dinner at Oslo’s Louise nightclub. There were 130 Covid cases recorded from the event, with Norwegian media quoting Tine Ravlo, an infection control doctor, suggesting that perhaps half could be Omicron.

The club had been booked by Scatec, a renewable-energy company, for its Christmas party, despite the fact that only vaccinated employees were invited and had been required to take a rapid Covid test the day before.”

@9:34am. There is absolutely nothing wrong with homeschooling your child if that is your choice. It is done every day but you need to go through the proper protocols and approvals. many parents have been doing this for years long before covid.

Locking up every one of our kids until the pandemic ends is moronic and stupid on your part. Our kids are the only ones that cannot be vaccinated so it is up to us the parents to do right by them and get vaccinated ourselves. Luckily for the kids they can handle covid and recover from it much quicker than us adults.

Please go get vaccinated for your children’s benefit if not for your own self.

For a politician to make it sound that being unvaxxed wasn’t the cause of this preventable death is disingenuous at best. Perhaps people will now understand that being unvaccinated is incredibly dangerous for all those who get infected.

    • Caymanian says:

I read it quite differently. To me he seemed to have said.

      4. All in his family tried to get her to get vaccinated but she refused.

Scientists appear stymied by the low number of infections and deaths in sub-Saharan Africa where the vaccination rate is less than 6%
Africa has 17.46% of the world’s population and 3% of the COVID-19 global death toll while countries with better health care have higher death rates, including the Americas with 46% and Europe with 29%
Nigeria, with the highest population, has had 3,000 deaths in 200 million people, which is what is recorded in the U.S. every two or three days. Yet, Nigeria has announced an all-out vaccination program to “prepare for the next wave”
Factors that may have influenced the low infection and death rate are outdoor living that raises vitamin D levels, a younger population and access to medications and herbs used for other local conditions, but which are also known to reduce the severity of COVID

CNS: There’s an interesting article about this here – Why Are So Few Sick From COVID in Sub-Saharan Africa? – which notes a possible correlation to the prevalence of malaria. Also worth noting, since covid targets the elderly and vulnerable that the life expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa is about 61 versus 81 in Europe and 79 in the US.

Well… I would hate for anyone to think that
the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine works for anything but malaria…
But this was talked about 2 years ago.

CNS: The malaria factor may have been why hydroxychloroquine was looked at, however the drug was studied extensively as a treatment for covid, and as a result, it is not recommended by anyone but Trump and a few fringe elements on Fox News. See Hydroxychloroquine and COVID-19

“Early in the pandemic, hydroxychloroquine was put forward as a potential medicine for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. While evidence is less clear on the medicine’s ability to prevent COVID-19, recent studies have shown that hydroxychloroquine is not an effective treatment for COVID-19, and that it may increase the risk of adverse events.”

Note that Trump, as president, very publicly promoted hydroxychloroquine as a preventative and said he, himself, was taking it. Then he got covid and nearly died. And then he quietly got vaccinated.

It was said that one of the reasons why the continent of Africa has been able to withstand Covid is because it has had to deal with so many viral illnesses. The people believe in science and they follow the necessary preventative precautions. They have to deal with HIV/AIDS. Ebola and many other viral illnesses including malaria. Africa has some of the best viralogists in the world

      • Anonymous says:

The reference to the prevalence of malaria is a reference to people having the disease, not the fact that they have been treated with hydroxychloroquinine. Because in sub Saharan Africa precious few people have access to anti malarials. And BTW – you cannot take that drug indefinitely – it does nasty things to your heart and your eyes – usually prescribed as a short to medium term drug for people temporarily in a malarial area, not for residents.

      • Anonymous says:

CNS you make it sound like Trump was an anti vaxxer. Wasn’t it Trump as President who started Operation Warp Speed in May of 2020 which funneled US$19B toward six different companies to fast track vax development? And wasn’t it nearly all the Dem Presidential cantidates who said they wouldn’t trust any vaccine being developed under Trump administration? And wasn’t it almost every “real” news outlet that said having a vaccine ready by the end of 2020 completely impossible?

CNS: The Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed that facilitated the development of the vaccine was a huge success. The subsequent rollout of the vaccine not so much. Trump also gave very mixed messages about the vaccine and mask-wearing and promoted untested treatment, which resulted in many Trump followers not taking it.
Fact check: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris distrusted COVID-19 vaccines – short answer: False.

The weather there could also play a role.

Generally speaking Flu weather where it thrives is Cold/Dry and Humid/Rainy. The Sahara is a dry heat with relatively low humidity. This is not conducive to outbreaks for flus.

This is not to say that in towns and villages it is not possible, just less probable.

SUB Saharan means below the Sahara. Pretty wide ranging geographical area covering from parts of West Africa (very humid and rainy BTW) to South Africa.

Also, much younger population. Average age in sub-saharan Africa is 18 (partly due to lower life expectancy but also much higher fertility rate). Avg in USA is 38.

Unlike the lower death rate in Africa, scientists appear genuinely stymied by the unwillingness of a significant minority in many rich countries to believe that vaccines are safe and effective, in spite of the growing mountain of evidence before their very eyes, preferring instead to believe in a massive global conspiracy drawing in politicians, medical professionals, reporters, academics and members of the public in their millions claiming to have been vaccinated and yet still be alive.

While some are calling it a pandemic of rank stupidity, critics of the label have pointed out that stupidity is in fact endemic in modern society and strongly correlated with the willingness among some groups to believe absolutely anything a supposed man of the cloth, baselessly claiming to possess divine inspiration and knowledge, tells them.

  14. Al Catraz says:

With this case rate, absent vaccination, there would normally be much higher hospitalization and death figures. These numbers, compared to anywhere else early in the pandemic, really show that vaccination is limiting the severity of cases.

Don’t listen to the “vaccinated can get it too” crowd. Yes, that fact in isolation is true. What they leave out is that vaccination gives your immune system a head start, so it is ready to fight early if you do become infected. That’s what these numbers show.

    • Anonymous says:

Agree that we’ve been collectively and statistically very fortunate. We shouldn’t push that luck by putting everyone’s immune health, preparation and vaccination status to the ultimate test, or deliberately risk economic interruptions via thrill-seeking absenteeism. Better that we consider the needs of others, collectively want to try harder to thoughtfully provide everyone non-household their due 6 feet, mask, and not to catch and spread any virus. It’s literally the law, not a choose your own adventure book.

The Government can pass the laws but when the Police and the Courts don’t do their jobs or do them properly this is the result.

CNS: I’m not sure that anyone knows how much immunity he will have if he was asymptomatic, as opposed to actually ill, and how long that will last, and if he needs just one shot or none. Let us hope our new temporary CMO, who is an infectious diseases specialist, will appear at a press briefing when she gets here in January to answer such questions.

  18. Jay says:

It is very regrettable and sad for the loss of lives.
At this point the only route people need to focus on is to find ways and means to come together to stop the expansion of the virus in the island. Deal with the blames later if need be. Now is not the time to blame anyone. Let us come to the table of solutions and stay away from the table of problems. We understand it is good to identify the problems to find the solutions. Time to be productive.

    • Anonymous says:

What an unfortunate choice of words…it’s the habitual “coming together” like we are still in a 2020 bubble that is the cognitive disconnect propelling infections. Following the Public Health Orders might keep our infection rate to a manageable level. That requires staying 6 ft apart from everyone that isn’t in your household. They don’t want or deserve your droplet wake because you are vaccinated and feel finished. We must think of others. It’s time for people to get out a tape measure and visualise what 6 feet actually measures out to, for “living with the virus”. You’d hope a construction guy in a yellow or orange shirt would know what 6 feet looks like. If cops were writing the $10,000 tickets, like they are supposed to be, this PACT administration would raise more money with personal space violations than the last decade of cruise tourism. These are Regulatory Orders since September!

    • Anonymous says:

Jay, The solution is easy GET VACCINATED.

      • Anonymous says:

The solution is actually strict enforcement of public health protocols, curfews, reduction of seating in bars and restaurants, and controlled capacities in all other retailers. Vaccinations without these measures are akin to plugging a hole in the dam with one’s finger.

  19. Anonymous says:

Just crazy. Why are there healthy young people who are unvaccinated when we have had vaccines for a year. They should be getting a booster now but because they didn’t get vaccinated they died instead.

    • Big Bobo In West Bay says:

8:59, One needs to understand that we cannot help the chronically stupid if they do not get the message after all this time.

There is only so much Premier Panton and the medical authorities can do.

Posters should stop blaming tourists as they got the message as all are double vaccinated and some are even triple vaccinated with boosters, they also enter the Cayman Islands with negative tests 24 hours before they arrive here.

Get with it Cayman people. Get vaccinated.

  20. Anonymous says:

Remember when the government told us that the health and safety of the islands residents were their number one priority? If that was the case, why have these people died?
These deaths were all preventable. We only had to continue with monitored quarantine because it was working perfectly. Everyone was safe and leading wonderfully free and normal lives.
Now people are dead and everything we do every day is no longer normal. Just so some already rich people can get even richer from tourists. There is absolutely NO evidence that people’s health and lives are the number one priority – money is.

    • Say it like it is. says:

8.56am Most of these deaths were due to the deceased not being vaccinated, THAT is the problem. Govt. cannot tie these people down and forcibly vaccinate them, their fate was their own choice.

People died because people at HSA do not call to check in on Covid infected persons in self isolation.

If you call the flu hotline, it takes hours before you get a response and all they tell you is take paracetamol and they will call back to check on you.

      Which never happens.

People need to make sure that they have a close cirle of friends and family who are reliable to check in and make sure that they are OK.

Otherwise more and more people will die, especially if unvaccinated and left to fend for yourself at home.

      • Anonymous says:

Everyone that died was in the hospital..Can you indicate which one died from covid at home because they were left to fend for themselves?

      • Philip says:

No – if there were COVID infected people breaching quarantine who spread the disease, it is their fault, not HSA’s.

Many people have quarantined and they managed to obey the rules, without the need for regular checks from HSA.

    • Anon says:

Get real. Cayman’s biggest problem is the small island mentality. Like some of you have never left. Looking to Government for everything rather than gripping reality and standing on your own merits. If it isn’t moaning how expats get the jobs it’s moaning why CIG opened the border. COVID ISNT GOING AWAY. YOU CAN’T LOCK UP AND LIVE OFF STUPENDS FOREVER. YOU CAN’T INVITE IN AND THEN CREAM OFF GLOBAL BUSINESS WITHOUT ACCEPTING EXPAT EXPERT LABOUR. Wake up, get vaccinated and get on with it.

    • Anonymous says:

This is the most stupid and reckless ideas ever.

    • Anonymous says:

The problem with that is you are much more likely to die if you are not vaccinated…catching Covid to try and get natural immunity is stupid.

    • Anonymous says:

Catching it is better than a vaccine? SMH.

So let me get this straight. The best way to prevent death from covid is to catch it?

This is like saying that because a majority of people that get in car accidents don’t die, the best way to prevent death in driving accidents is to crash your car.

In other words, you Sir/Ma’am, are an idiot.

    • Anonymous says:

Well CNS won’t display what I read in the John Hopkins referenced report so you might want to read it for yourselves.

      https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/vaccine-induced-immunity.html#anchor_1635539757101

CNS: Your previous post on the matter with this link and the quote from JH was posted here. I’m going to add the same note.

This is an interesting topic and will continue to be studied, especially as new variants pop up. And full disclosure, I don’t have time to read this whole article right now. But note (in the executive summary): “There are insufficient data to extend the findings related to infection-induced immunity at this time to persons with very mild or asymptomatic infection or children.” This means that the study looked at people who had symptoms that were not “very mild”, i.e. you have to roll the dice and risk being severely ill and possibly dying or getting long covid to get that immunity. Most doctors strongly recommend that you don’t do that.

Also from the summary: “Substantial immunologic evidence and a growing body of epidemiologic evidence indicate that vaccination after infection significantly enhances protection and further reduces risk of reinfection, which lays the foundation for CDC recommendations.”

  23. Anonymous says:

    So it go.

  24. Anonymous says:

So, Mr. Premier. People are dying and livelihoods lost because people broke quarantine. The risks and consequences were foreseeable. We have a high vaccination rate. The current wave is dwindling. Daily numbers are down. Hospitalizations are down. Deaths are up, seven this year. Unvaccinated adults are taking unnecessary risks. Some perspective. We’ve had nine die on our roads. Without the vaccine, Covid would easily be winning this race.

How bad must it get here among breakthrough fully-vaccinated alcoholics for revisionists to understand this is a statistical global reality that is playing out? • Anonymous says:

Ugh, can’t believe you think Trump said to inject bleach into your veins. That’s simply false. But I guess a lie gets repeated often enough and people think it’s true.

CNS: Below is Trump’s verbatim word salad at the press conference in question. It’s muddled and insane enough that I expect you will both claim victory.

“A question that probably some of you are thinking of if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposedly we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it. And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. (To William Bryan, the undersecretary for science and technology at the Department of Homeland Security at the time) And I think you said you’re going to test that, too. Sounds interesting, right?”

          He continued.

“And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me. So, we’ll see, but the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute. That’s pretty powerful.”

Later, Trump clarified his comments after a reporter asked Bryan whether disinfectants could actually be injected into COVID-19 patients.

“It wouldn’t be through injections, almost a cleaning and sterilization of an area. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t work, but it certainly has a big effect if it’s on a stationary object.”

The makers of Lysol were concerned enough to later issue a statement that “under no circumstance” should its products be used in the human body.

Panton has simply lost the plot. He needs to go and explain the PACT Government’s management of the pandemic to those individuals that have died from COVID-19 and to those individuals that have died from illnesses that were further complicated by COVID-19. Also, if the PACT Government was focused on protecting lives and livelihoods and on not taking unnecessary chances why then are they allowing the earlier than previously scheduled return of cruise tourism to the Cayman Islands.

The CDC is warning that cruise ship travel is in a high risk category and placed it in Level 3: High level of COVID-19. So let’s congratulate the Panton/PACT Clown Car for inviting a high-level risk to the Cayman Islands. I congratulate them for maintaining a very consistent level of stupidity.

One of the ladies who died this weekend was a vocal anti-vaxxer, 2 others that were healthy also would not take the vaccine. At some point you have to take personal responsibility for yourself. Others that passed away had co-morbidities, some of those were not vaccinated.

Are you beginning to see a trend here. No one ever promised that we would not have deaths from COVID.

Stop blaming the government for every ill in your life and start taking responsibility for your actions or lack thereof.
