‘Trusted’ travellers get wristbands for ID

IMSafe wristbands

(CNS): People travelling to Cayman who have had a verifiable vaccine against COVID-19 are now allowed to isolate at home on trust, but government is still issuing them with wristbands to ensure that the monitoring team can quickly identify them during welfare checks and make sure they are not mixing with friends and family while they are in isolation. Officials confirmed that as the first travellers quarantining on ‘trust’ begin to arrive, they will be closely monitored even without the GPS tags.

Anyone arriving with an unverifiable vaccination must still quarantine for ten days with the GPS bands, and all unvaccinated groups, including families with children, must isolate for 14 days either in a government facility or at home with the tag.

Two more travellers in isolation have tested positive for the virus. There are currently five active cases of coronavirus among those in quarantine. Only one person is symptomatic and no one is in hospital.

Meanwhile, there was little change in the vaccine numbers on Thursday, with the national rate for those fully vaccinated still at 68%. Just 75 more people got their first shot over the last day and 54 their second dose.

      It doesn’t work like that.

Would be much lower due to the vaccination rate, but agree this shows a reason to open the borders. Those 40 people would be unvaccinated and have made their choice. And our hospitals can manage these numbers.

When will we accept that everyone will get COVID eventually. Just like everyone has had a cold or the flu. There is no way to avoid that outcome. Once we accept that and stop thinking that by magic, the grace of god, or isolating ourselves we can avoid it we can begin to make rational decisions about getting vaccinated or not and how we can live and thrive in spite of COVID.

    • Beaumont Zodecloun says:

Agree. Moreover, I doubt the virus/variants will attenuate until it has truly spread throughout the world communities.

US is about to start offering boosters. Hopefully they will be offered in Cayman as providing boosters is better than sending the vaccine that the anti-vaxxers don’t want to the dump.

“The United States is set to offer some Americans Covid booster jabs within months, according to reports.

The New York Times said today that US president Joe Biden’s administration is developing plans for third shots of the vaccine by the autumn.

It is understood the first boosters are likely to be made available to nursing home residents and health care workers, then older people.

Officials plan to give people the same vaccine that they received initially, the newspaper reported.”

In Delta we don’t trust – Guardian

“The number of children in hospital with Covid in the United States has hit record highs due to Delta variant outbreaks.

There were 1,902 children in American hospitals as of Saturday, making up 2.4 per cent of the nation’s coronavirus hospitalisations, reports the Reuters news agency.

It is understood hospitals across the south have been left stretched to capacity because of outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant, which originated in India.

The figures were provided by the US Department of Health and Human Resources.”

Great article in the daily Telegraph today about countries like Australia and New Zealand who are trying to take a zero Covid approach and shutting down to the world, and how foreign investment is drying up and they are heading for their worst recession in 50 years. Very relevant to cayman, the conclusion:

‘ Countries can cut themselves off from the world if they want to. They can remain in permanent lockdown and prioritise public health over every other form of endeavour. In effect they are creating “hermit economies”, isolated from the rest of the world – and they are condemning themselves to eventual poverty. ’

Covid is never going away and we have an incredibly high vaccination rate. Time to open up.

  8. Anonymous says:

Antibody testing should be rolled out to measure any waning effects on earlier vaccinations and/or any natural count from past exposure and recovery. If the 80% goal is to be clinically credible, it should tally everyone with Covid antibodies, not just those completed courses paying Pfizer shareholders for a vaccine against Covid-classic, circa early 2020. If we don’t equally measure those with recovery antibodies, it feels like we’ve lost track of what this effort is supposed to be accomplishing and why. There may be some that believe they had it, that didn’t, and who might need the vaccine now and not previously believed they needed it.

  9. Anonymous says:

You want lab proof that your Pfizer vaccine does not stop Delta, here it is. What is scary is that being jabbed now with a vaccine based purely on the original strain could cause even more ADE in an evolved strain, beyond Delta. That’s why the Singapore viral load analysis showed a slightly higher viral load in vaccinated over the first five days. It’s not that simple folks.

    https://www.journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-4453(21)00392-3/fulltext

CNS: I am not a scientist and neither are you. I did, however, read all the way to the end of the article linked, to where the authors said of the possibility of ADE occurring in people receiving vaccines: “the results obtained so far have been rather reassuring” but should be studied further. i.e. no link has been found yet but diligent scientists are keeping an eye on it.
Here’s more on the subject in a more digestible form: Do the COVID-19 vaccines cause vaccine enhanced disease?
Again, the vast majority of people getting very ill or dying are the unvaccinated, and they are getting younger. The negative effects of long-covid, which affects a significant proportion of people who have been ill with the disease, are increasingly apparent.

    • Anonymous says:

Thank you once again CNS – I am beginning to think that there are trolls out there who get off on spreading disinformation in the hope that some of our people will get sick and die.

    • Anonymous says:

CNS you seem to be exclusively getting your facts and science from the CDC and US press. The “vast majority” of people dying from covid in the UK right now have been double vaccinated.

CNS: Here is a very good explanation of that in The Conversation: Most COVID deaths in England now are in the vaccinated – here’s why that shouldn’t alarm you
Or look at this graph here. Since the UK began its vaccination drive the number of people dying from covid has dropped dramatically. This means that the number of vaccinated people dying is a percentage of a much much much smaller number.

      • Anonymous says:

        Merci CNS

      • Anonymous says:

I’m no mathmetician but in order arrive at The Conversation assertion you have to ignore efficacy. Following this logic if 51% were vaccinated and 49% were not you would expect to see a death rate of 51 deaths per 100 in vaccinated people, which puts efficacy at 0%.

Any math quants care to give it a go with actual efficacy and the theory above? Last time I checked vaccine rates in the UK were 80%. First glance puts efficacy frighteningly low but again, I’m not a mathematician…

      • Anonymous says:

None on the ship are dying but all those infected are capable of spreading the virus where ever they go on shore. We need everybody here to get vaccinated.

      • Anonymous says:

Why do you vaccinated have to make it about the vaccine? The OP did not say a word about anyone being vaxxed, they just indicated how unsafe cruise ships are at the moment because they are petri dishes for this damn virus. Regardless of whether they were vaxxed or not, they are still sick withe the virus. Meaning, their bodies are infected and they can still spread it. It is even worse if they didn’t know they were sick as they would be going about their merry way infecting everyone.

      • Anonymous says:

You seem to have missed the point that these ships are moving infected people from port to port. Even if the crew do not get sick their shore leave could kill people.

Canada has a vaccination rate almost as high as ours and will probably pass ours in a short time. In an effort to limit the Delta variant Canada is moving to require all federal employees and all passengers on ships and planes to be vaccinated or have medical certificate of exemption. We should think about doing the same.

“Canada said it will soon require all federal public servants and many other workers to be vaccinated against coronavirus, Reuters reports.
The vaccine mandate, which will also include air, train and cruise ship travelers, comes just two days ahead of an expected election call by Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and could prove to be a wedge issue in the campaign. Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc said that the vaccine requirement for public servants will be in place by the end of October and that he expects state-owned corporations and other federally regulated employers to follow suit. He added that testing and other measures will be put in place for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.”

Canada’s Soviet-level Covid response: including looking to Europe and playing that forward a few weeks, sourcing ppe, testing capacity, lying to Canadians about vaccine delivery priority, corruption-plagued thefts, and see-saw policies have been a predictable demonstration of what to avoid. Ontario in particular has over 80% first doses administered specifically because of governmental policy mistrust and frontline knowledge their Premier is a lunatic ignoring science, and has left thousands dead, including “iron walled” old age homes (again, and again). We should be very happy we aren’t using their playbook. Pick another country and we’ll do them too…

I can only keep praying that most people who come here are trust worthy enough to quarantine as required without being monitored 24/7. In the US recently a parent who tested positive for coronavirus sent their kid to school, even though the kid had also tested positive for covid before going to school. Now almost 100 kids and teachers have been directly exposed because of one person’s selfishness and sense of entitlement.

CNS: Here’s the story for anyone interested.

    • Anonymous says:

Sadly many people thing that just because they have the vaccine they can do whatever they want and quarantine should not apply to them. Just one numpty can mess it up for the whole community, because they are ignorantly thinking they can’t get it or won’t transmit it. You would be surprised how many people think it’s impossible to get Covid after being vaccinated. We all need to be sensible

      • Anonymous says:

And whose fault is that? Who has been pushing the vaccine like its a cure. Isn’t not the government and news media?

CNS: If you think the vaccine has been promoted as a cure, you haven’t understood anything. The covid vaccine is not a cure, it’s a prevention. This is a devastating problem that doctors are facing where there is an outbreak – people asking for the vaccine as they are dying and having to tell them it’s too late. Here’s one article of many. My colleagues in Bermuda say they still have to wear masks in some places. Their main concern is avoiding remote learning again in fall for kids.

No easy solutions …I don’t think CIG will eliminate the quarantine requirement on Oct 9th. I’m now ok with that (I wasn’t before). It is clear that tourism here, there, and anywhere will not be back to normal this year.

Vaxxed and unvaxxed should have the same quarantine duration- whatever that may be. Both can still catch and transmit the virus. This whole is against them mentality is tiresome.

The thing you guys miss is the fact the vaccinated are far less likely to catch the disease in the first place. CDC Covid tracker showing up to 8x less likely to catch the disease in the first place (data varies week to week).

The REACT study is also reporting 3x less chance of fully vaccinated (source included) contracting Covid. The fact is this, when fewer people catch the virus and the pool of infected people is smaller, that in it itself reduces transmission. This is without even looking at infectivity of the vaccinated.

Seriously what rich travelers can even get here? I guess the ones rich enough for a private jet can get here but I don’t see a bunch of private planes lined up to land at GCM.

We are not going back into lockdown because CIG is going to keep the border closed until sometime next year. That has been their plan all along. They have no plan for how to handle community spread of Covid and the delta variant has everyone in a total panic.

It is crazy to me that people are still terrified that the border is going to open. We are never reaching 80%, that is crystal clear and PACT has made it clear they will not budge on that number. Quarantine is here to stay, they will never allow the US CDC card as verifiable proof of vaccination thus they prevent most US citizens from qualifying for a 5-day quarantine.

I don’t like the plan, I think it is time for us to be able to go and come from this place as we choose but the fact remains nothing is going to change this year. PACT has seen to that already. So calm down and stop shaking in your boots.

Scroll down to see this part copied and pasted directly from the article. We need to stop pandering to the idea that surface contamination is a huge way the virus is spread

“Do I need those bleach wipes again?
No extra surface cleaning is necessary. Even though it’s more transmissible, delta still transmits the same way the original SARS-CoV-2 virus does. “This type of virus, which is an RNA virus that is enveloped, tends to transmit [through] respiratory transmission,” Chu says.

That’s backed up by “some extremely detailed contact tracing” done in the recent preprint from China, says Rasmussen. The researchers “determined that these cases were transmitted primarily through what they called indirect contact, which is most likely inhalation of infectious aerosols [while] breathing shared air, or through direct physical contact,” she says.

That means the primary way the virus spreads remains being indoors with someone who is infected and breathing in their droplets or aerosols. With delta, the difference is that the infected person will make many more copies of the virus, faster, which makes it easier to spread

  25. Anonymous says:

Trust when delta is about to sweep America. There are still people who think this the flu. You think they are going to do the right thing? The vaccine was approved for emergency use, also Israel is on their third booster shot and still some are dying. This is the wrong move

Now, if only CIG could choose a method for verifying US vaccines that is actually available! The SMART Health Card they have chosen as only acceptable method hasn’t even been rolled out yet! An official letter from pharmacy/state plus vaccine card should be an option.

Hi, thanks for informative articles. Can you also provide coverage of whether there will be an official passport or wrist bracelet etc provide to Cayman residents who are hoping to travel and at this point only have their paper version of their vaccination details?

    This is so preventable. 😢
    https://www.thedailybeast.com/coronavirus-kills-4-teachers-in-one-day-in-broward-county-school-district
Four Florida teachers working in the same school district died of COVID-19 within one day of each other this week. “Within a 24-hour span, we had an assistant teacher pass away, a teacher at her school pass away, an elementary teacher pass away, and another teacher at a high school,” Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco told CBS. Fusco said three of the teachers were unvaccinated and that the vaccination status of the fourth was unknown.

      Why the dislikes? Honest question.

        My 2 cents.

Thank you for sharing. Very very unusual, hard to believe story.

*CNS: It’s hard to believe because you don’t want to believe. Read this and weep: Broward leads nation in new COVID hospitalizations; Miami-Dade 3rd
“We realize very, very well that the data is absolute,” said Dr. O’Neil Pyke, chief medical officer at Jackson North Medical Center. “The folks who are actually vaccinated are being protected to the tune of 90+ percent. The folks who are unvaccinated continue to fill the hospitals.”
While over on the other side of Florida: Lee Health warns of alarming increases in COVID-19 patients, deaths – Delta variant more contagious, deadly and affecting younger patients

        What is known:
        – they worked in the same district.
        -3 were not vaccinated
        -age?
        – how and where they were treated?
        – how long they had it?
        – exact cause of death?

        Why no details were provided?

Secondly, if all the facts are correct, there are millions who did survive covid.. We are doomed if continue focusing on those who died, not those who survived.

Before you start name calling! I’ll remind you that when people die from vaccines, it seems that those millions who had no ill effects are brought into justification. Then why it is the opposite when it comes to getting ill from covid?

          Thank you, CNS.
As of today, 620,000 people in the USA have died of Covid. You say “there are millions who did survive covid. We are doomed if continue focusing on those who died, not those who survived.”
I believe those who died would tell you the exact opposite. Please have some compassion for the MILLIONS who are grieving the loss of family and friends to this awful virus.
Get vaccinated, please, for all of us.

More details that are not in the link you provided:

        – The teachers did not contract the virus at school, according to Fusco. Some had family members who had contracted the virus and spread it to them.
        – the names of schools or teachers is not provided

The story was repeated at least 150 times.

CNS: You’re getting desperate now. CNN: 4 Broward County, Florida, educators died within about 24 hours from Covid-19 complications
“The teachers’ deaths come just days before classes start in Broward County, among the country’s largest school districts, and as coronavirus cases surge in Florida and other states, driven by the Delta variant and low vaccination rates.”
So clearly, they did not contract it at school. What on earth is your point? Perhaps the names of the schools and the teachers were not provided to protect those schools and the teachers’ families from conspiracy theory nuts who refuse to believe the truth and harass people for telling it.

        What was the question?

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

      Preventable?
Wrong choice of word, unless of course you have a magic pill that prevents people getting Covid.

      • Anonymous says:

Immunized individuals can contract Covid. We know this. Deaths from Covid are extremely rare in vaccinated individuals. I don’t believe that it is a coincidence that these teachers who died were unvaccinated.

      • Anonymous says:

Being unvaccinated is preventable and it’s free! As people move freely around and live in a mental bubble, the incubation period for COVID will rip through the island in 10-14 days and it will be toooooo late to get vaccinated. This day will come. You might delay, but you can’t hide. Do your part and protect yourself and your neighbor. Change ME to WE and make it happen.

Phase Two Done. This allows the CIG to assess the local impacts and build capacity to manage increase in traveler volume anticipated with opening the borders in Phase 3.

Reached one mile stone, but somehow it just doesn’t seem to have celebratory feel. Wonder what the increase in traveler volume will be? Surely the stylish new wrist band will draw travelers in like flies to a dumpster.

It is time to do away with this tyranny entirely.

If they open the borders for daily flights and keep 5 day quarantine in place, We will be fine.
