Masked men try to abduct woman, force her into van
(CNS): A woman who was walking on Saturday night in the area of Safehaven Drive off West Bay Road, by the Ritz Carlton, was saved from an abduction by a passing couple, police have said. At around 8:25pm the woman was approached by two masked men in a white utility-type vehicle. The men demanded that she get into the van and tried to grab her. But the woman managed to get away as the couple who were passing by saw the exchange and engaged the perpetrators in an effort to help the victim. As a result, the would-be abductors got back in the van and sped off in the direction of West Bay.
The victim was uninjured during the exchange and the couple who helped the victim left before police arrived. However, the police who are investigating the incident are keen to speak with them, as well as anyone else who may have seen what happened or who can assist with identifying the two perpetrators.
Although the men were wearing masks, police said they “appeared to have dark brown skin” and are of slim build.

So with the prior abduction attempt and two prior assaults I suggested something had changed and a bunch of brainless dweebs responded with Racism and why not Caymanians.
I am wondering how many need to be abducted before you figure out that these sorts of crimes and crime waves happen from people who almost literally cannot help themselves and if that is the case this wave would have started months ago and continued.
Something changed!! Either we are looking at person(s) new to the Island or someone known for this just got out of prison. People do not wake up one day and say “oooh I think we should start raping women”. It’s a serial style crime and need to be investigated with that in mind.
Again I say What Changed!!!
When you can attack a woman in a bar, twice, plead guilty and walk free from court or when two of you can beat a man to death in cold blood in a pub carpark and get 3 to 4 years inside then it should come as absolutely no surprise that we are seeing horrible violence like this. Do the politicians and judiciary not realise what message they are sending out with these pathetic sentences? What is it going to take? One of their friends or relatives to be the next victim? Time to start handing down some serious sentences to be served off island.
Did I just read that masked men in a white van tried to drag a victim into a van?..In Cayman?
Worse it’s not a loan maniac. Two maniacs found each other in this small community…What are the chances unless we have a serious problem. What the hell is going on?
You ask, “What is going on???” It is the result of the lack of punishment for criminals!
Fellow women: Wasp spray is our friend. Read up on it and do not hesitate to use it against would-be rapists.
And with woke social justice betamales like PACT in charge, don’t expect anything to change.
What is your problem? PACT is not the Justice League. Geez!
Women: walk with a can of BOP or Raid bug spray in your bags since they won’t allow us to have pepper spray!
And mothers of boys: please keep them away from the “thug” influence lifestyles and music/media that encourages this ridiculous and disgusting behavior.
And young ladies: for God’s sake keep away from boys who can’t keep a neat hair style and pants on their waist and who think they look cute driving a car with vulgar music so loud it makes traffic feel like a backstreet club!
Perfectly said.
Yes, in layman’s terms- we need to breed the ghetto out of this Island.
My wife would previously have been unconcerned and felt safe walking alone on any part of the island but not now. And while it may be an isolated incident, it is a very disturbing development for Cayman. Yes, we are still the safest island in the Caribbean statistically, but anyone with a brain in CIG should look at this and be very concerned.
Do we have anyone like that?
Life goes on as usual? No hourly updates? No press-conferences? Nothing??!!! WHY?
My two cents.
RCIP – Catch these guys quickly. Start looking first at who recently came into Cayman as people “generally” don’t wake up one morning and think lets do this. If its local they would have done this more than likely before.
Judges – We need to make examples of these guys. We need them punished to the fullest extent of the law. No blighs. No shortened time. Every damn inch we want you to take. No time off for good behavior. Good behavior is expected and demanded. If we send for 10 years then they get out at 10 years to the damn second.
Our problem is we too damn nicey nicey. When people go to prison in other countries they fear going back. Here its like a vacation. Judges do what we put your @#@s there for.
people who “recently came into Cayman” – I can’t figure out if this statement is racist or just denial – likely both.
Because Caymanians never commit crime!? What a berk.
Not about Caymanians don’t commit crimes. Rape is a more serial style crime. People who rape or sexually assault tend to have done it before and over and over again. It’s in them. Like a serial killer.
So its not racist as much as its about the fact that it JUST POPPED UP. That said its a high probability it could have been someone who just came in or maybe even someone recently released from prison.
One is an incident, two is concerning three is serial. This is not something you keep undercover for long periods of time NORMALLY.
Ok. On that logic what about the missing women never found on Cayman. That’s not recent.
Doesn’t seem racist.
Yeah. Sort of overlooks the fact we have at least 2 other instances of women disappearing without trace in Cayman. But like every shooting, stabbing or child abuse case, the initial reaction is always to say it must be expats. Right up to the point that a Caymanian is caught, and then it’s that they are not “real” Caymanians, even if they were born here. Why can’t we be grown up enough to admit that like any society we have our bad apples?
What is the time frame on those? How many years ago and now 3 incidents in two weeks
Mr. Anonymous, With the near-absence of proper child care in the home we are lucky the crime rate isn’t twice as much….. and I don’t think much of the care and training in our schools, either!
Not racist or denial, just commonsense.
When something happens all of a sudden you have to ask “What changed?”. Generally, someone new in the area or someone coming back to the community from say prison.
If it was 1 incident its just a hiccup in the system. When its two you need to consider it concerning and at third now you have a predator and serial style criminal. Why did this start all of a sudden?
Honestly don’t care where they would be from. I assure you that you are more racist than I probably am.
Isn’t the island closed? Who coming in?
illegal yardies that leave drug boats on the beach.
Denial, maybe. But racist? How is it racist?
Check out the posts in the CNS article in Northward from last week. Some are claiming we need to rehabilitate these animals. Get the f&@$!!!!
Welcome to little Kingston… Our Women and Children are not safe anymore that’s been evident for years.
The local Jamaicans wont like to hear this yet they don’t want to live in Jamaica either.
Most local Jamaicans have a future plan and that plan is to come here work and save and build up back home and when it’s time to leave they can retire right back in sweet sweet Jamaica
What is your reason for not wanting to go back to the shithole where you spawned from and if you have no intentions on going back then I suggest that you go somewhere else and spread your hate, POS.
You mean West Bay?
Hate? The commentator is raising a point that you can agree or disagree with. Yes, many Jamaicans work hard, and there are many who are very decent people – but there is also a part of them (minority) who in every country they go to cause a disproportionate amount of gun crime and violence. Is it hateful to state the truth? No more than saying that there are whites in the American Midwest who have some serious meth/drug problems.
Rather it be little Kingston than little Miami
Where all innocent lives are not safe, not just women and children.
Kerran Baker and Anna Evan were never found. Disappeared from the face of the rock.
400+ police staff.
In the US and most civilized countries, surveillance cameras everywhere, literally 10ft apart (not that I like it). As soon as a crime is committed, the images become public, helping to locate the perpetrators.
Attempted kidnapping on a tiny rock mid ocean is an extremely disturbing and concerning incident. It must be solved within 24hr. Heads must roll if they don’t. RCIPS can do that if they employ qualified and experienced investigators.
Quote: “RCIPS can do that if they employ qualified and experienced investigators.”
O.K. I’ll give you a very definite “maybe” on that.
Mass shootings, armed robbers, muggings, home invasions, rapes, speeding and wrecking constantly. And our population is under 70k.
XXXX
CNS: Please don’t shout.
Unfortunately we have allowed some very dangerous individuals to remain on these little islands and we are also continual allowing complete menace to society creeps out of prison by irresponsible probation staff who are writing glowing fictional no threat to society reports on many of these criminal minded scumbags. Who are also mixed up with them in this terrible situation adding to our already out of control crime situation. This right to family life rubbish crap is base on a bunch of falsehoods and rubbish create by those with hid agenda’s.Deportation for deportees works in the UK why can’t it work here ??
How much does Government pay for CCTV cameras, this should help to see where the van went. It looks as if it would be better to hire more under cover CIDs or detectives and get more police patrolling the roads instead of sitting in the office waiting for a call.
Are women allowed any self defense weapons or are they all banned?
Pepper spray and the like and stun guns are illegal. As far as I can tell, a walking stick is still legal, assuming a person wouldn’t get charged with excessive force if defending themselves.
This needs to change.
Women get a personal alarm. It can’t be used against you in a struggle and it will scare the crap out of anyone trying to harm you long enough for you to get away.
The government does not want anyone but themselves armed. Of course the bad asses who have illegal weapons do not obey the law. This does not make sense to me.
“Rules for thee but not for me”. Same as it always was.
6:18 we are allowed NOTHING!!!!!! It is past ridiculous.
Guess what……wasp spray isn’t illegal so maybe we should start carrying that! A few good shots of that to the face will help!
Why would the couple leave the woman and who called the Police? Was the white van just a plain white van or did it have a company name? What accent were the men speaking? Did no one take the license plate down? Hope the Police find these deplorable persons and they are thrown in jail. Island gone mad.
6.14am Agree but I also wonder why the victim refused further assistance. Did she know the guys in the van? Wasn’t she frightened enough to at least get a ride home with the persons who intervened.
Closed borders will be a set back for Cayman tourism, but it will be temporary. Fear of crime is always a major setback for tourism. Although Cayman has had increased crime as of recent it has not been published outside Cayman, to any degree, due to covid border lockdown making it a moot point. I suggest the authorities get a handle on this crime before reopening.
The authorities? What authorities? Surely you jest!
Quote: ” I suggest the authorities get a handle on this crime before reopening.” Are you serious?
5:46 what do you mean by “it has not been published outside Cayman”???
Many visitors read our news. Between the extended border closures and crime increases, our tourism is going to struggle.
Maybe the govt should focus on the skyrocketing crime rates… and not waste any more time pretending “climate change” eroded the beach.
Pretending? Your ignorance is showing.
Care to explain how the sea level rising ~5mm per year eroded the beach? I don’t think 1/8″ per year causes that…
Global sea level has been rising over the past century, and the rate has increased in recent decades. In 2014, global sea level was 2.6 inches above the 1993 average—the highest annual average in the satellite record (1993-present). Sea level continues to rise at a rate of about one-eighth of an inch per year.
https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/sealevel.html
Your lack of critical thinking skills is showing.
Most people can do more than 1 thing at a time. You are obviously not one with that kind of brain power.
AMEN! That beach has been eroding & returning since before the Marriott and Regal Beach Club’s time, all the old timers know it. Its not global warming its over reaction and building too close to the water in a location that constantly comnes and goes through the years.
Yep, but all the developers want you to believe its the boogeyman called climate change.
So in the last couple of weeks,if i remember correctly,a woman was sexually assaulted by a man who broke into her house,a woman was raped at knife point by a stranger who gave her a lift home and now an attempt abduction by masked offenders. Not only is this a really frightening trend particularly for women but more incidents like this will have a big impact on the perceptions of potential tourists coming back to Cayman. Add in the gun and knife violence over the last 12 months and the islands don’t start to look as safe to an outsider…..
Maybe the police should use the CCTV they have set up on every road??
The cctv In lieu of them showing up for work and performing their duties. Lucky there were passers by in this instance to thwart this attempt. Sadly, we are all on our own when it comes to safety, protection and crime solving.
This comment makes zero sense! Even if that were the case, how would kidnapping someone help you financially anyway? This has NOTHING to do with the broders, these are just psychos!
“How would kidnapping someone help you financially anyway?”… ummm, ransom?
Google the word ”ransom”. We really live a privileged life!
Yardie
Another person who shouldn’t be here!
This is disgusting and deplorable behavior. I am glad that the woman got away.
It’s horrible that people would try to do something like that.
God bless the couple that helped out the woman.
Again I say……..we should be allowed to arm ourselves with pepper spray and tasers. Having laws that prohibit self defense gear is utterly ridiculous!
Perhaps not tasers, but certainly pepper spray and stun guns.
I should clarify. You said, “Having laws that prohibit self defense gear is utterly ridiculous!” Which I totally agree with. Tasers shoot a pair of projectiles, and I don’t think the average citizen should be armed with them. I think that should be only for the RCIPS.
Other than than, we are in total agreement. We should have pepper spray and stun guns, because both require interpersonal contact, and not contact at a distance.
For the past 10 years, “Safehaven Drive” off West Bay to ETH by the Ritz Carlton has been a Ritz employee driveway owned and privately secured (supposedly) by DART, the landlord. What’s their comment?
Commissioner Byrne you need to track these bastards down and hit them hard.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
What’s so funny?
The Commissioner is going to track them down?
Dart is responsible for policing their private properties, per clauses embedded into the NRA agreement, and the signage they post they hope will offset their lapses. They have let their lands grow over into a decrepit eyesores and danger areas, impairing sight lines through their neglect and disinterest, and providing cover for opportunistic criminals. They can post as many signs as they want, but those do not acquit them of their corporate responsibilities and duties to neighbours, public, and territory, under the Lands Law.
Are you serious?
Jamaicans. Check the statistics of kidnappings in Jamaica.
Caymankind translation “Blame everyone but ourselves”. Let me ask you this. How is that incident (and others) not a direct reflection on our island? Which tourist is going to say, it only counts as rape, abduction and murder in Cayman, if committed by a Caymanian?
The only modern-day abduction, rape, and murder to be committed and recorded in Cayman was Estella and the guilty and sentenced persons were both Jamaicans.
Right and that was “random”, not anything preplanned, Estella wasn’t specifically targeted, and no $ changed hands? I still cringe about how that case was just swept away with 100% of the blame on the two perps who seem to have done the deed…but why and for whom? Didn’t at least one of those knuckleheads leave and then return on their own from Jamaica only to get busted upon their return? They must’ve thought they were free and clear or they were THAT stupid or a bit of both. Invited back to take the fall and cool down the local heat because someone was getting too close to the uncomfortable reality that this was a hit.
Week after week the headlines are getting worse.
Cayman not looking inviting to tourists.
Wow, is it just me or are people on some sort of special drugs, Sunday night two weeks ago at the KFC at Bay Town Plaza. A male, dark skinned, slim to medium build, face covered with a bandana and a hoodie was hiding behind the cashier window and jumping out at each car was paying pulling his trigger finger whilst pointing at the occupants of each car.
This went on for about 4 mins, and no police arrived. I was surprised no one ran him over.
Did you call the cops?
This matter should be sorted like now.
Police do not sit on this and make it gather cobwebs.
This person could be your mother, aunt, sister, cousin, your daughter or friend etc.
Let’s not forgot what happened in Deckers parking lot some years back. A crime that should never be forgotten.
Our females in this country need to be protected at all cost.
As for the men who tried to kidnap this lady this should be your fate. You are certainly not men in my books XXXX.
I’ve loong wondered when this type of sick, scary shit would start in Cayman. It’s like stuff you see on tv! I’ve seen 60+ years of Cayman (and also lived overseas where stuff like this is factually more common) but can’t recall abductions or attempted abductions being usual here. Perhaps one every few years…? Thankfully!
Thank God (that’s who I believe in) that the other couple were nearby, and cared. Thanks folks God bless.
If God didn’t want this to happen,………. why did it happen?
Yeah. Why didn’t He just zap them with a lightning bolt? It would have saved time and trouble.
There’s been a lot of unreported similar incidents recently.
Then people have a DUTY to report them to protect other potential victims.
To this day, we have ladies MISSING. Nobody knows what happened to them. I am reminded of Anna Evans and Anita Baker. What ever happened to these ladies??? There are so many questions. Do we have a cartel/sex ring? Do we have addicted perverts to pornography? Do we evil people among us into the occult? Do we have corrupt officers that can evade the system and not get caught?
These disappearances on our small island have people still living in fear. And nobody seem to have answers. Only God knows.
Perhaps you should ask Him!……………………… Let us know what he says.
F Covid. I want some action by the ministers and police immediately. This is ridiculous
Our authorities continue to leave law abiding citizens defenseless against the ever increasing levels of violent crime within our society. The truth is that they only genuinely care about themselves and their own safety and security. The victims of violent crime as victimized once by the violent criminals and again by those in power who are happy to see law abiding citizens brutalized and tortured in their own homes and in public.
WTF?
Glad she got away and someone stepped up to help!
CCTV on the road to WB, should not be hard to track them down.
Unless the CCTV is shit and we have paid millions to line pockets instead of to secure our safety and aid effectively in the enforcement of our laws. Any accountability?
Ask Eric Bush
@ 10:24 Not just him.. Whole bunch of questions for the bunch that sold this bill of goods and the bunch who reviewed, approved and signed off on the crappy cctv.
If police don’t catch these fools, we can deduce that the CCTVs have the same technological prowess as a Nokia 3310.
On the face of it this is scary s#*t, really f%#*@“g scary. How and what have we become. There can be no tolerance or leniency for this kind of behaviour, Justices are you listening
thank anyone you believe in that there were people to help 🙏
Violent crime has skyrocketed since the borders have been closed. There is simply not enough money moving around the economy and it is pushing people into Drugs, Alcohol and dangerous crime.
This extended closure will push Cayman into poverty, crime and failed statehood.
Reopen now!!
You are f******** crazy to blame this on borders being closed people like you shouldn’t be here
Five words: Too many expired work permits.
Too many Jamaicans
Agreed. Absolutely crazy comment! Borders are closed and so why not abduct a woman whilst wearing masks! I am so grateful to God that someone stepped in and saved this woman.
And you are crude, ignorant and delusional. Do you think the borders being closed makes life easy for everyone? Certainly many enjoy the slower pace, but we have a sufficient number of the population living in condensed homes, a shacking up and facing real hardship. Wake up and try to be more empathetic and logical.
Such irresponsible drivel.
Go home then?
It goes to show it’s never too late for a contender for dumbest comment of the year.
Skyrocketed? Really, beyond several stories that made headlines, I’m assuming you’ve got in depth statistics to prove this theory.
People who try to force women into a van are not driven to that behavior due to poverty. Hmmmm, I’m short of cash to pay my light bill, what works alleviate that issue is abducting a female.
Lastly, there’s plenty of money swilling around here. Look at the boom in construction and realty sales. Granted, that money isn’t exactly spread around fairly, but there’s plenty of it.
Maybe stop letting in certain nationalities known for crime too.
I notice all the down votes. 7:06 you are correct but others don’t see it yet. I leave in a few days, had enough. Pretty sure I will get responses like good to see you leave, etc. I will also be taking my $10K per month spending with me.
#caymankind
16@6:54pm – Perhaps you’re the bigot poster who always posts “#caymankind” to all negativity which occurs in Cayman, in and out of proper context! In this particular case, you can so firmly assert that post that you must know as a fact that the perps are “caymankind”. If so, please hurry to the RCIPS so that you can factually say that the perps are not dark brown-skinned from anywhere else on the planet, including the other side of the world, but are indeed “#caymankind”!
Or perhaps you might care to explain the context attached to your one-word and clearly biased posts.
Indeed, there was a time I still remember when one could be almost guaranteed that the perp of any of the very few crimes committed was “#caymankind” (excuse the paradox) but sadly those times are now the “good old days”.
Let me say it straight – imported culture and its influence has not only helped Cayman!!! Thanks to those who brought good but plenty crap has come in too!!
I think that the comment #caymankind was directed at the couple that came to the rescue of the victim.
Their actions certainly were cayman kind.
