McLaughlin promises to increase stipend

(CNS): Warning that no one knows when the borders will be able to open as a result of continuing challenges around the world relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alden McLaughlin made promises on the campaign trail this week that the tourism stipend will be increased to $2,000 a month if the PPM leads the next government and if the tourism sector remains impacted. He said that even if the borders are reopened, the return of tourism will take a long time and people will still need help. But the government has some CI$525 million sitting in the bank as well as a line of credit that the future government will be able to use to help the people, he said.

“We don’t know when Cayman will be able to reopen,” McLaughlin told an audience at Tropical Gardens. “We have an estimate that it could be early June but it is not just Cayman that we have to worry about; it is the rest of the world and how many people are willing to travel,” he said, adding that the cruise sector would not come back until 2022.

“If we are returned to office and you see June and July come and things are not so… that we can truly open and tourists can truly come back, we are going to raise that stipend to $2,000 a month,” McLaughlin said. “We put that money aside so we can help our people. That we have done and that we shall continue to do.”

Although he suggested that some ‘opposition’ candidates have said they would stop the stipend, most challengers in this election have also committed to increasing and extending the payments to those who have been the most affected by the pandemic and the closed borders.

The new party leader and heir apparent for the premiership, Roy McTaggart, attempted to address the confusing messages that have been coming from government recently about the target for vaccination levels in Cayman before the borders open or the 10-day isolation protocols for those who have been vaccinated change.

He said the target for the border opening is around 75-80% of the adult population and not, as has been suggested, three quarters of the entire population, including children. None of the current vaccines have yet been approved for children. The first is likely to be available this summer but it will be confined to children over twelve.

At the moment around 43% of people over the age of 16 have received their first shot and just under a quarter of adults have now had both doses.

McTaggart said the only way out of this pandemic was vaccinations to ensure that the community remains safe. He said the reintroduction of visitors remains a priority for the next Progressive government but it would be guided by the science, especially given the spread of more infectious variants. Although he did not outline any figures, the new party leader said that the Progressives would continue to provide targeted packages to businesses affected by COVID-19.

Mr Alden. What about the old Seamen and old retired civil service people that’s getting less than a thousand p.m ?, and are too old to work,.most out of work Tourism people is young enough and healthy enough to work like in the construction which are booming now, but we old Seamen and retired civic servants are too feeble to work. But we need to live too. It’s alright to give the others, but why not raise ours too.

Then why support them? This is just one more of the dirty tricks they have in their bag. Desperate times, desperate measures. Didn’t Wayne Panton say in a recent interview that he thought the stipend should be $2000?

That’s exactly what Alden and Joey and Roy Infact the entire ppm think of us ! I am a extremely happy and pleased that the price for our common vote has gone up from CI$25 dollars to CI$4’000 and increase of 16000% Mann now we talking Alden ! Those who touched on Roy being merely a pretender to the throne or alden’s little b!#@% and puppet are correct but more importantly the political and financial elite love to see their own kind at the helm and it sure does help that his other half works for so called resident King and the real de facto leader of this island. Cayman you have a very hard choice to make on the 14th April 2021 Status Quo and Marginalization or Change to fairer representation for Cayman and those who care about our environment.and yes younger leadership and ideas.Unfortunately we also have a few crackpots desperados and old hands who believe it’s their turn to be leader who we definitely do not want or need and are just replacements for the current Regime! Vote Wisely Cayman look around at what is happening to our beautiful islands . Do not make your vote be a freeman or woman’s instrument to make a real fool of ourselves!

Vote buying, come on, you all know politicians give money out of their pocket all the time. You need help, you can stand in line and get help. Try doing that with your boss? You call up your representative and they will help you. If you can’t reach them by phone, you can find them in church, events, or at their businesses. Isn’t that what they supposed to do. I didn’t go to a member in Gov’t all my life and I’m 67 years old now. Now that a pandemic has happened what is the true life expectancy, eighty maybe? You want people like me and my young wife of 60 to get retrained and work in a grocery store? Are we a third world country? Because most third world country have a cheaper cost of living. They have discounts for seniors, free dentistry, free eyecare. Places like Panama where a dictator named Noreiga got taken out by the US government. Have you seen it? Check it out online. These are the things that we need in this country.

Many of these same PPM’ers are the ones that are the anti vaxxers. I get whatsapp every day from one that is pro-Barbara Connolly and constantly promoting anti vaxxing telling people not to get it when his holy leader is telling everybody to get it. That is one of the reasons why we are not able to open up yet and Alden needs to use his bully pulpit more to ensure that people in his own party are getting vaccinated. Does the PPM know how many members of their party have been vaccinated?

I am still waiting to see what Wesley Howell or the Commissioner of Police have to say about this..Of course Alden still has the backing of Martyn Roper so likely it will go nowhere and within days will be swept under the carpet.

All I can say is, it is going to take more than $2000 to buy my vote. Sorry Alden, mine is not for sale.

That is a morally reprehensible, and illegal, act.
Promising the most desperate segment of our population to reward them only if they return the members of the current government to their seats is a promise to treat, and is a criminal offence under the Elections Law.
And to falsely insinuate that the “opposition” candidates will deprive those poor desperate people of their meagre stipend, only aggravates that offence.
But the worst part is that it reminds those poor souls, who have been either put or left by the very same government into abject poverty in the desperate situation of having to wonder if their lifeline will disappear if they don’t vote PPM is a wicked and heartless act.
Because it reminds these folks, who deserve dignity as much as we all do, that they are beholden to the government for a lifeline, which will only be guaranteed if the PPM is returned to office.
Talk about adding insult to injury!
Any government that demands that it citizens must dispose of their dignity and surrender their right of choice of representation, else they will perish, is NOT a government, but an oppressive regime.
These are the tactics of a dictatorship like the one of Kim Jong-on, and has no place in a free democratic society.
Alden has shown, once again, that he believes that he is our Supreme Leader and that the rest of us are nothing but his pawns and his minion.
I can only hope that the Governor and the Anti-Corruption Commission will give this the attention it deserves.

  15. Anonymous says:

They are doing the right thing. Biden the democratic president knew if people get what they need they would connect with his presidency. I don’t need a fridge but our industry is destroyed. The rest of you still have a job.

    • Anonymous says:

See that is the problem..you believe you are entitled to it.

I share your pain that you have lost your job in the tourism industry, I did too. I drove a taxi and now I drive for a delivery service. I no longer have to pay for all the upkeep and gas for my van and I am making more money than I ever did when I was driving a taxi and with better hours and better tips.

If you sit at home and wait for Alden to send you money you are part of the problem and not the solution.

I don’t understand why people don’t understand that this government wants to keep us dumb, uneducated and unemployed. One only needs to look at West Bay and McKeeva’s meetings. Look around the crowd and see who is there. The same ones that have been on the gravy train for years, drinking their liquor and smoking their weed and hanging out all day doing nothing. He knows as long as he can get up on his soap box and denigrate anyone that doesn’t agree with him and tell those in his audience how much he has given them and how much more he will give them that he has their vote.

Alden took a page right out of McKeeva’s book because he learned quite quickly that doing this would assure his longevity in politics.

For me, I am 58 years old now and for my entire life, I have always worked for a living. This is not the first time I have had to change my career path but I did it because I had to survive and feed my wife and children. I don’t believe in hand-outs. I didn’t take the first round of $1000 checks because I thought that there would be others that were in worse shape than me that could use it. Now to hear that there is $525M sitting there and all workers in tourism will get $2000 a month as long as they vote for the PPM makes me sick to my stomach. When people were suffering last year, the best they could come up with was a $1000 now a year later these people are still getting a $1000 a month and are being promised another $1000 if the vote for the PPM. Doesn’t anybody see anything wrong with this? Why would anyone want to look for another job? Couldn’t they have used some of that $525M to ensure that a lot of tourism workers were re-employed in some area of the economy? I’m not saying that all of them can be employed in other areas but certainly by now government should have most of them in other jobs and some kind of plan other than just handing out money and using this as a means of vote buying.

By the way Biden gave a ONE time payment of $2000 to every citizen of the USA. He did not promise that on a monthly basis. Our government instead made us take our own pension money to survive on even when they had $525M they could spend. Many people outside of tourism lost their jobs too but other than the useless NAU they were left to survive on their own.

If people can see this for what it is, then we are a lost country.

    • Anonymous says:

Every person in the US got the check, working or not. It was not an arbitrary decision by one person.

Secondly, what are you waiting for if your industry is destroyed? Demand CIG to pay for your re-education, re-training…

      • Anonymous says:

7:33 – Everyone in the US did NOT get a check. Only individuals who made 75k or less or couples with a combined income of 150k or less. It was based on income reported on US tax returns and the IRS (under the US Treasury) was handled the process.

      • Anonymous says:

The stipend is now way more than minimum wage. There is no motivation to go find a job. Welcome to the welfare system.

      • Anonymous says:

Every person in the US did not get a check. It is contingent on income levels from prior year tax returns and excludes many persons. You are right, however, that it wasn’t just up to one person to decide.

Anyone that is still sitting around because their tourism job is gone, is being lazy! Over a year ago, Alden said there would be no tourism for a long time and local tourism workers needed to seek other employment and expat workers should head home.

“But the government has some CI$525 million sitting in the bank as well as a line of credit that the future government will be able to use to help the people, he said.”

Wow, talking about setting expectations. We’re flush with cash, so come on down, get your hand out, then go back to play dominoes under the grape tree (on the beach) and drink all day!

Absolutely, there are many that genuinely need help. However there will be droves who will lineup for more free cash, many of whom never were interested in working for a living, prior to the pandemic! We are slipping more and more into a socialist state. It’s never been a better time for the ‘lazy’.

  19. Johann Moxam says:

The utterances being made seem deliberate and intended to influence voters at the polls or is it just more empty political promises? The authorities should be concerned enough to look into matters.

Is this the first official and public attempt to buy support or votes on Election Day? The use of public funds to secure support is a slippery slope…is this allowed under the rules?

What is the position of the Elections office on what has been publicly stated?

Is the Anti-Corruption Commission or RCIPS looking into what the precise meaning of vote buying is on the campaign trail?

Unfortunately, vote buying is real and happening in all districts. It is illegal yet I am unable to recall any person, candidate, agent, party or supporter been investigated, charged and convicted for vote buying in the Cayman Islands to date.

Caymanians need to understand that your vote is private and your choice…no one knows or can confirm how you voted. Use your right to vote as you see fir and vote for the best candidate to serve the district and country. Do not believe that you are bound to vote fir any candidate because of any attempt to buy your support or vote.

The time has come for Caymanians to use their power and hold all accountable.

“EAT THEM OUT, DRINK THEM OUT & VOTE THEM OUT”

Still waiting to hear how you are going to slow down the rapid growth in population brought on by grants etc. Please tell us are you committed to rollover maybe or something else? Or tell us how you plan to move back buildings along Seven Mile Beach from being too close to the sea.( You were so clever at dodging this on Cayman Crosstalk that not even CNS noticed that you had failed to answer the question that they had submitted). Because these complainers want to be in charge and they are not allowed to hold office.

The operative word here is “if” the PPM leads the next government. This is nothing more than saying “if” you vote for me and “if” I’m re-elected, I will give you $2000 a month for an undetermined time..This is quid pro quo and in simple terms vote buying.

I wonder where the anti-corruption people are and if they are listening to these meetings and utterances.

Can you imagine if any of the independents were to say this how the PPM would crucify them?

If Alden wanted to give this $2000 per month, why predicate it on him and his cronies winning the election? Why not just do it now?

Alden now holds the $2000 per vote carrot in his hand and like every other time us Caymanians will continue to fall in line.

I just don’t get why we continue to allow this type of thing to continue happening every election.

If the PPM were any good they should be able to get elected on their track record not on promising $2000 checks and paving every road they can find.

And why do they have to wait till after the elections; why not increase it now?

    Vote buying. Plain and simple.

Such as: The Roads which are hopelessly congested despite over 20 years of him as MLA (and the last 8 as Premier) which he has no vision or plan for; the jobs (he is the immigration minister) which young Caymanians should get and his idea is to set up attractive programs for overseas professionals to apply for PR; the environment which the young people had to wrestle him to stop him from wrecking our prestine harbor with to cater to the whims of the cruise ship market (and big Kirk business ness in town — Mose any one!) and the dump — over 20 years of his competent experienced management—— and it keeps on flaring and burning…. flaring and burning —— just look out side and watch the clouds of gray toxic smoke —- maybe we need another song “Aldin Say” Now we don’t know for sure if the others will be different… but Alden we know what he’s a bout and need to send him to his farm in East End like he promised he would do last election!

Rather than promising handouts, a complete retooling of the tourism sector has to happen. Stringing out people with handouts only fuels dependency.
Retrain former tourism workers to do something worthwhile like farming or habitat conservation. There are things that will serve Cayman well into the future and will bolster our food security and natural environment, what’s left of it.

Besides this being vote buying (for those that are in tourism and think it’s not read again). Why did he not do that beforehand, why wait until elections (it’s vote buying). On another note, thought it was the Medical folks who advised when the boarders should open but now it’s only him who makes that decision (pure self absorbed attitude). Other islands have done soft openings with really good success and the US has increased their vaccinations to the point where several states are now vaccinating 16+ year old. At what point is he waiting to get this island going? 2023? Hope he gets voted out as we need rational thinking people, and for those of you crying about leaving the boarders closed stay at home, the rest of us would like to get this economy and lives going.

Fitting considering we have a 3rd world country dump fire blazing at the moment!

Make it $4000. That way we never have to open the border…

A promise is a comfort to a fool Alden, and you’ve made too many promises to too many fools. Please be done with PPM everyone. The LA or whatever the F it’s called these days, needs a complete overhaul.

1.30 Overhaul maybe but you still won’t be allowed to get elected here… just us third world locals.

NOT vote buying 101 if your family is directly affected by closed borders that is outside of your control.

These people have mortgages, food bills, loans, school fees, medical costs, etc and little-to-no-income and with no expectations of any in their immediate future. Transitioning to new jobs (if they exist) is highly improbable for a large number of them.

Stay on your soapboxes and pontificate from more privileged positions while these people suffer.

Just remember, red blood run in their veins too.

    • SSM345 says:

Specifically telling the public that if you vote for the PPM they will increase your monthly stipend is vote buying and nothing more than that.

In black and white; and as simply put as it can be put.

If it wasn’t he didn’t need to mention “PPM” in the same sentence.

I know its alot for you to comprehend 1:07 but its really not that difficult.

People are fired daily, it is not the continued responsibility of the community to handle the financial burden of those formerly employed in tourism. Like everyone else, upskill and learn/obtain a new craft. Life isn’t fair, we either keep up with the times or get left behind the choice is yours.

FYI born and raised 8th generation Cayman – not that that matters other than to reduce the xenophobic remarks

@2.36 bet you wouldn’t be saying that if you got sent back to whete you came from. You would be invoking all sorts of human rights claims as to why Government should support you. And no you are not Caymanian. Caymanians have empathy and compassion.

I’m from Cayman jackass so come again with your nonsense. Cig doesn’t have a money printing machine, what will you tell your children and grand children when their saddled with excess debt? I was to lazy to retool myself? Foh

1:07 pm. They need to get other jobs. Like in construction. Oh, that’s hard work. We tourism ex workers are lazy people, we can’t do that

  46. Pensioner says:

What about pensioners especially over 60’s who are struggling to pay bills and buy food. Can $950 sustain this? So what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Wwe need an increase too

    • Anonymous says:

Well – if you want that, then we need a system of income taxation to pay for welfare and health.
Cake-ism was and remains exposed as being a complete failure to appreciate reality. Ask the brexiteers – if you can get through to fantasy land.

With the minimum wage at CI$6/hr they will never make $2000 a month basic salary. Even at $10/hr they will need to work 50 hours a week to make $2000 a month. This is not setting realistic expectations for tourism workers when tourism resumes. Will government help employers in meeting this expectation gap in terms of salary levels that they have created?

If people thought that the PPM would ever be anything other than the Party of Alden, then I have some Ocean front property in Arizona they may want to look into.

      • Should have been a politician says:

If my party is elected I promise to give the able bodied $3k and the disabled double that amount every month.

Technically i’m not buying votes when the money is handed out after being voted in already.

      • SSM345 says:

        12:53, you are the idiot.

He could have got away with it if “PPM” wasn’t in the same sentence, but he has essentially said unless he and his crew get back in there will be no increase.

That’s to make you vote for them i.e. vote buying with a monetary reward.

Still too difficult for you to get or still blinded by the money?

        • JG says:

So if a political candidate says his plans, and someone likes it and votes for him or her its vote buying? You always have the most idiotic comments and replies SSM345. This is the point of the elections, to see what candidates are going to do. Then if it pleases you, you go out and vote sucker!

          • SSM345 says:

I see that people have added the actual legislation to this thread although that will probably confuse you even more.
