George Town flooded by rough seas
(CNS): Rough seas with high waves closed parts of the George Town waterfront Friday night and continued Saturday as the harbour front and cargo port were flooded. The police warned motorists to avoid North Church and South Church Streets after closing off the roads. Waterfront bars and restaurants were all closed on what should have been a busy holiday weekend for George Town businesses.
The rough weather tore up the fish market and flung sand and seaweed all across the road, creating hazardous conditions in the downtown area.
According to the Cayman Islands National Weather Service, the rough seas could last until Christmas Eve. Forecasters have issued a small craft warning and called for rough seas with wave heights of 6 to 8 feet.

Just a good old fashioned Nor’wester. Nothing to be alarmed about.
So old fashion the nor’wester should be part of our heritage.
Ron, It is part of your heritage.
Speaking of the private beach at Balboa . The sand , is that sand natural, or dyed that color? If dyed what will happen now that most of the sand I assume is washed out in the water ? And what is it going to cause .
If the new dock had been built already it would have blocked most of the waves.
Over where chocolate box used to be before royal watler that whole side would be flooded. Once Royal Watler was built it doesn’t get hardly a drop of waves anymore.
Yes CHEC get it built now!
Seems like all a unna just reach! Unna nah seen a good Cayman Nor”wester yet! That was nuttin. Too many Johnny -Come- Lately experts on Cayman on this site. It’s a force of nature peeps, Been happening since what is now called the Cayman Islands was pushed up from the deep millennia ago.
Idiot
Wave dynamics. Google it.
Google don’t know shit
You Kool ade drinker , what do you think that the pier would have done to stop or prevented the ocean waves from doing anything . That would have been flooded just like the streets .
Mother Nature saying to the building of the Port “Hold Daat- You Ain’t Seen Nuttin Yet Bobo”!
And they’re proposing to generate power using an OTEC plant fed by a floating platform? LOL, watch the videos of this and then tell me it’s a viable option.
Yep, let’s dredge GT harbor more, it’ll be ok we don’t need the roads anymore or maybe the first row of buildings.
No first row of buildings – now that would be fantastic!
A wide open space alone the waterfront with a clear view of one of the most beautiful harbours around.
We don’t actually have a harbour. It is just calm on the west side most of the time so we dock there. By definition a harbour is a sheltered area with deep anchorage.
Been a regular visitor since 1975. I am appalled at what is happening to the west side of the island. But that’s why they call me NorthSideSue.
so stay northside then….
Northside is one of the last places with the real Island vibe.
Think the new port development should now be shelved or relocated. It is now obvious it cannot be placed in George Town. Why doesn’t the Government look at developing George Town similar to Camana Bay? The infrastructures are already there i.e. restaurants, stores, etc. plus the view of the sunset is far more beautiful than Camana Bay canals. Smells better too!!. Hypehatically if the port is built at Spotts or in East End, there would be so many benefits to the island (taxi drivers and tour operators included) without destroying beautiful Hog Sty Bay.
Sure, with the beautiful port cranes, and shipping containers and 3rd world country electrical poles . And the cruise shipper have the beautiful view of the dump. Yes beautiful. Please don’t change anything.
Will any of the Port Authority staff be held accountable for what appeared to be checking the water levels using the tires of their trucks. This is deliberate abuse of PACI assets.
On another note, can Government now be convinced that with or without the cruise piers, they will not be able to be used on days such as we just had.
6:29 thats the way its been for the last 500 + years where were you
NO EIA needed here!…. mother nature showed us for free! No wonder the support continues strongly behind the Cruise Port Referendum (CPR) ….. everyone that has signed that petition see’s the concerns with the whole project except our so called leaders! Keep up the great work CPR and all your amazing volunteers! #fortheloveofcayman
3.20pm That’s right, support is so strong yhat in 6mths tjhey still can’t reach 5288 signatures. By the time they do this petition will be outdated and they will have to ask a different question and try to get a new petition.
Waiting for the “If the RCIPS has been doing their job, this would never have happened.” quotes.
How did the private beach at Balboa make out? Has the imported sand been exported?
It’s long gone. What was the first name of that boxer from Philadelphia Mr Balboa?
Very good. Good to see some decent humour around.
?
Ha ha very good.
11.14am No coubt the sand has disappeared, wish I could say the same for the Trolley Roger.
It has today had further beautification with the addition of a hamburger truck. Jamaica all over again and the fish market looks crap. It is all a great impression for tourists particularly with cars illegally parked on the sidewalk.
Sad long time visitor watching these beautiful islands being sold to the highest bidder maybe Mother Nature can stop it
what are you talking about…. private property transcations between a willing buyer and a willing seller???
go back to cuba.
Calm down. Jesus.
Place needed a good cleaning out anyway
Get ready for a lot more of these types of floodings with the sea rising and global warming increasing. Already a regular occurence along the coasts of Florida. New buildings should not be allowed to be built so close to the water especially on Seven Mile Beach.
You can blame the CPA for allowing the Thompson Purple Piss Pot. It breaches setbacks on all four sides!
They are true Caymaian so you need to quit whining.
2:05 You mean Dart’s best friends of which they are proud to be without a concern for their Bretheren yet they know the Bible and Tithe?
God sees all. He sees the Soddom and Gomorrah indulgences and greed of the Country.
Fort Myers Beach experiencing high tides and beach erosion. https://www.winknews.com/2018/12/21/fort-myers-beach-experiencing-high-tides-and-beach-erosion/
Only a matter of time until we get the same beach erosion on Seven Mile Beach as in Fort Meyers, Florida.
that will never be!
8:05, Been to the Marriott Beach Resort lately? Sorry to tell you but the beach there is long gone.
Now all the corals, fish, sidewalks and streets are going to die from the silt…..
How does a road die?
9.28am Obviously a newcomer or you would know this is nothing new. The harbour will be just beautiful in a few days.Just an old fashioned Nor’wester .. Cayman has seen a lot of these in the past. We’ve had shrimp boats deposited high and dry on the ironshore on South Churh St ( one would have thought that a crane had placed it there). So not to worry , all will be back to normal in a blink.
The weather signed the Port Petition!
Still a grand short
And the new dock will defy mother nature. Every winter we have rough and high seas and every winter during high season the ships go to spotts.
So smart. It’s greed. Kirk’s just wants more and more. And they don’t even need it. Greed and selfishness at the expense of the greater good, population and the environment.
I wonder if people don’t realize that the only time of the year that spots is smooth is when George town is rough
I’m not being cynical but some parts of GT could do with a good wash! Certain areas and buildings are looking a bit run down.
Could ships have been docked at a Pier? lol
could they?
The answer is NO.
New cruise port?
At least this was Mother Nature, and not the National Museum inconveniencing everyone.
It was Alden’s fault.
jesus is coming! signs of the times….accept or not…he is coming….
He already came, shrugged, and left with a rum cake.
You ain’t seen nuttin yet.
Well ,where is Moses and Alden ? Wonder if they went to the water front ?and that’s only a small front .
Let this be a reminder the sea levels is rising.
I’m just visiting to see yet if some idiot has said how the cruise ships could still come in and passengers disembark in this weather if we had the new cruise ship dock.
No one said that ships would be able to load or offload passengers during a Nor’wester. But please note that the port is protected for far more days than it is closed due to Nor’westers. If the piers were placed at Spotts thhey would be exposed for as many days as they would be protected. Just saying.
any caymanian that don’t know that the water at spots is rough 98% of the year
needs his head check.
we will bring in some one to control the weather simple
Ah Christmas breeze, love it!
Didn’t see our eminent PM dear old Alden inspecting the damage or supporting the retailers.
Oh no he would have been tucked up at home counting his dollars.
Home? Na! Country or Da Station, you mean.
Global warming is making these Nor Wester’s worse.
dah wha ya get! and you still want to put the dock there. Good luck. the master of the ocean and earth and skies is speaking with a loud voice.
nature is saying ‘this is enough to stop the port’. If they can’t hear they will feel.
I am awaiting posts blaming this on Government LOL.
You weren’t disappointed. After all, everybody knows that government is supposed to do everything for you to make you happy and protect you from the world and your own choices.
thanks for the non-warning national weather service…….zzzzzzzzzzzzz
pay attention to the foecast and you would see the forecast was on the mark and early
yep and thats why the waterfront and all it business got washed out….zzzzzzzzz
weather service is one big joke…just like everything else in the civil service
No docking of ships in GT on these types of days, can it be any more clear that this?
Yep, the waves are reminding us all what they can get up to. Imagine when the reefs are removed for the abominable cruise piers. Then it just won’t be the fish market but all the stores will be washed out. Anyone remember all the jewelry reported washed out to sea from some of the homes on South Sound? A category 4 or 5 hurricane with nothing to break the waves with the reefs gone will really have a field day..knuckleheads in charge for sure!!. In weather like this the ships have to go to Spotts, is it stupid to ask why the heck these technocrats won’t put the dock in Spotts and leave George Town the way it is. I hope the Governor took a drive down on the waterfront to see the waves in actin, maybe even him would have a change of heart on the plan for this destruction that is being contemplated.
No Spotts Dock. The reef damage would be even worse.
Reef at 30+ feet breaking the waves lol. Please.
2.51pm Spotts has more bad weather days than Hog Sty Bay. Check the reports made prior to the 1972 port development.
