US visitor dies after snorkelling trip
(CNS): A 72-year-old man from the United Stated died yesterday after snorkelling off Seven Mile Public Beach, police have said. Just after 12:15pm Monday emergency services responded to a report that a man had experienced difficulties in the sea and had been brought ashore by members of the public, who were administering CPR. When the medics arrived, they continued the CPR. The man was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Is it just me or is it that some tourist over the age of 60 seems to come here for there final trip. Do the companies here not have an age limit or health requirements? This is very unfortunate and my condolences go out to the family but this isn’t something new here in Cayman as this happens every few months.

A survivable medical issue like heart arrest, stroke, seizure or fainting can be deadly if swimming. Unfortunately the face down posture while snorkeling does not make a loss of consciousness immediately evident to others. Just like scuba, snorkeling is best done with a buddy who can monitor you and render aid if necessary.
Anyone know why this happens so much? Not just here but all over the world. I personally know someone who died this way in another part of the world.
What way? There is no mention of the actual cause of death. It could have been one or a combination of many different things. People die on land every day as well…
One thing that is a disgrace in Cayman is that watersports providers owe no duty of care to their customers because they are allowed to insert wide exclusion clauses to carve out liability for personal injury or death caused by their negligence. This is a disgrace in a modern UK territory. The UK has barred such odious clauses for some 40 years. By allowing exclusion clauses there is a huge increase in moral hazard risks in the sector and less review of safe practices monitored through insurance processes. The reason Cayman is so backwards on this is simple. Money. Politicians would rather a few tourists die or are seriously injured than local families are made to incur increased business costs.
Walking your dog can be dangerous , so can toasting your muffin. Stay safe out there !

Another casualty again on the beach. I guess snorkelling isn’t such a leisurely activity as one might think. My condolences to this poor gentleman family. So sad.
