Moxam plots path to alternative government

Johann Moxam (standing) with Sammy Jackson and Chris Saunders

(CNS): Johann Moxam has revealed a developing alliance between himself and at least another seven candidates that will present the country with a genuine alternative to the current administration. Moxam, the challenger for George Town North, said that the group, which includes Alric Lindsay, Sammy Jackson, Bernie Bush and Chris Saunders, will be growing over the next three weeks into a full blown “coalition of the willing” to provide a possible pathway to a new government.

Speaking at Jackson’s campaign launch in Red Bay on Wednesday evening, Moxam told the crowd that “help is on the way”, before he indicated that several candidates in the race who share the same values and policy positions are talking about how they can form a solid alliance. The goal is to present a viable alternative government before people go the polls.

With no one group fielding enough candidates to win outright without an alliance, Moxam told CNS that he believes this ‘coalition of the willing’, which will include some incumbents as well as a number of new viable candidates, can win enough seats to lead a different coalition to the one being proposed by Alden McLaughlin and Roy McTaggart.

Moxam said that within the next few weeks, after each candidate in the new alliance has had the chance to make announcements on their own hustings, the group will take shape.

“The purpose is to present voters with a potential government to avoid the scrambling and closed-door horse-trading on the night after the election,” he said. “We have all learned lessons from the last government, and while we are not a party with a leader, we are an alliance with shared values that will be endorsing each other well before election day.”

Moxam explained, “We began conversations months ago about the need for integrity, honesty and transparency in government, as well as policies that work. We hope that, as we present an aligned policy platform and a commitment to ethical government, the alliance will win the confidence of voters.”

While the question remains as to who would be premier from among the group, there are at least four individuals who would be capable of holding this office, he said. That decision will depend on which of the eight or more members of the team are returned to office, he said, but the priority is to commit to each other and the work that needs to be done.

Since declaring the early election, McLaughlin, the current premier, has insisted that the PPM-led coalition is the only viable option. Although he is fielding eight Progressives in the race and two independent coalition members, the PPM’s path to government is broad.

McLaughlin has denied any plans to campaign alongside McKeeva Bush, but the PPM has no candidates nominated in West Bay and the party has not endorsed any candidates running against Bush and his small three-way alliance in the district.

This suggests that while McLaughlin may prefer a coalition without Bush, his history of political maneuvering makes it clear he will not rule it out. There are also several seats where, even if McLaughlin is unable to steer his own PPM or preferred candidate to victory, he will likely be able to co-opt the winner into his government if he winds up with the larger group.

But if McLaughlin loses to Jackson or if the ‘coalition of the willing’ brings home more members than the Progressive coalition, then Cayman may see the change that many people are longing for, not just from the individual faces who have dominated politics over the last two decades but in the conduct of politics as well.

See the current political groupings of the candidates, which is subject to change, under the Interactive Election Map.

I believe Johan should have Wayne Panton join his group and drop Bernie.

Also, I believe Andre Ebanks is with the PPM, even though he says he is independent, after all he worked for the PPM government – just saying.

Ladies and Gentlemen… introducing the Cayman Marl Road party. Loud mouths, lots and lots of talk and zero substance. It’s vomit inducing how naive they think people are. I wonder what they are giving Sandra in return for promoting their campaigns? Impunity from indiscretions in their personal and professional lives perhaps? Lord knows this whole bunch needs it. Dig deeper people.

Regarding the capability and experience to run the country, let’s compare the experience and qualifications of this group to what we have now.
John Jon – no qualifications no experience
Joey (also of Jamaican heritage) – no qualifications no experience
Tara – qualified but no prior experience
    Roy – same as Tara
So the truth is; we have been allowing the country to be run by unqualified inexperienced people and need to change this mistake in this election. I will vote for change !

Is the situation with the country that much of a dire position that we need a complete overhaul of the existing government?

Did we have some major scandal or misappropriation of public spending that is sending the country in a downward spiral?

Well it is under these situations that you elect officials without any ministerial experience and or public office experience, let alone foreign relations etc. Why is someone like Wayne Panton not part of this coalition? I am just asking.

I don’t exactly like Bernie either. But at least he isn’t a convicted criminal. If he was that much of a terrible person, Sammy wouldn’t align himself with him.

I am welcome to some change but not that drastic.

A bunch of guys with no public office experience, expects the country to accept such a bold and drastic change? Are you kidding me?

Saunders is also hungry for power with posture, that he will go wherever in hopes of achieving it.

Not in these times when the world is that vulnerable and volatile. We don’t have the luxury of learning by mistakes.

There are 5 seats in Cabinet. The 5 people I think should fill those seats are:

    Wayne Panton
    Roy McTaggart
Ezzard Miller (I know. I know.)
    Michael Myles
    Andre Ebanks

The last two are somewhat inexperienced but have a lot more experience with Govt and policy than many past Ministers.

I’d also love to have 2 or 3 women on my list, but unfortunately there are none qualified for Cabinet who are running.

    Thoughts?

I want to know how they would have handled the pandemic because and how they will reopen our borders safely. We won’t need to worry about education, roads, and all the other stuff if people are getting sick since everyone hasn’t taken the vaccine. As for transparency and acting like Alden …he already is as he’s seeking a coalition which is the same thing as a party. They just don’t give it a name.

The politicians don’t actually come up with the plans. It’s the civil service who are the experts, having researched etc then provide recommendations and the way forward based on what a Minster may have in mind. In many cases the Minster may actually have not clue, but they get to vote on or push an idea Cabinet makes a choice. It would be good to find out if a Minister has even researched, written or provided information that informs a policy document.

What the current government is doing in partnership with senior civil servants, which anyone can do, is get the information gathered from around the world see what the experts are saying regarding covid what works for border control particularly in small nations and move from there. The Chamber of Commerce is also giving some sound advice.

But Chris, Alric, Arden, Johann would want Sammy for his legal skills and if Sammy part of their team more difficult for him to address the fact that there are majority of Jamaicans and Trinidadians running things, stating with civil service and public servants, and this does not promote fairness, or Generational Caymanians with opportunities.

Unfortunately, I liked this comment by accident but meant to dislike it. Also, how do you expect the new candidates to get this experience of governing in the first place if you don’t give them the chance? Alden and McKeeva were new once, but it’s easy to forget that since they’ve been in power for years. How is that fair? How is it fair for the same people to be in power for so long? I don’t feel like I’m living in a democracy.
And has this current government really done a great job? Because I think they have failed on a number of basic, but important issues. Everything from education, to health care to the dump. No man, these guys need to go. They don’t care about the environment, and they don’t care about the Caymanian people.

Johann, Alric and Sammy are all like-minded individuals, and if elected, would be excellent MPs. Chris Saunders, I’m less enthusiastic about because like most MPs, he was silent on the McBeater situation, but I assume that they wish to align with him because he’s sensible and easy to work with. I would love for Johann, Alric and Sammy to be elected – that would be a power trio. But they can’t do everything on their own. Who else do you expect them to align with?
We need to put aside any personal grudges we have against candidates and start looking at the bigger picture. I want Cayman to have a good future, but I just don’t see that happening with this current government. I don’t see that happening with leadership of Alden and the PPM (or what’s left of the UDP). If Alden gets re-elected, I would certainly like for him to come to his senses and do a good job, but I don’t think that will happen.
All I’m saying is, at least consider giving this new group a chance. It simply isn’t fair for the same people to be in power for so long, and it’s even worse when they’ve showed on numerous occasions that they don’t have the best interest of the country at heart. They don’t care about the environment, and they don’t care about the Caymanian people.
