Ethics board urges integrity in political race
(CNS): With 50 candidates battling it out for the 19 seats in Parliament, the Commission for Standards in Public Life is urging all of them to “uphold high ethical standards of integrity throughout the election process and once appointed to office”. And they are asked to start by honestly updating and declaring their interests, assets, income and liabilities.
In a press release, the commission reminded candidates of the Nolan Principles, or the Seven Principles of Public Life, which are part of the Standards in Public Life Law. They are: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
“These principles are paramount in the decision-making process of the public’s interest and should be promoted and supported by all seeking public leadership within our Islands,” the commission stated.
CSPL also raised the need to develop a Parliamentary Code of Conduct and asked candidates to think about this code, which it wants the next government to implement at the earliest opportunity after the April national ballot.
