Local women admit selling lottery tickets
(CNS): Four women who appeared in Grand Court Friday all admitted that they had sold lottery tickets. The women, who have been charged under the gambling law, were caught selling the tickets near Archie’s Bar bar on Shedden Road, George Town, during a police bust in March last year. The women, aged between 19 and 47, were all previously of good character, the court heard, but they now have criminal convictions. They are expected to be sentenced Tuesday, but as the law currently stands, they are likely to face a small fine.

The real gamble is driving the roads.
I’m shocked, shocked, to find that gambling is going on in here.
I would have bet $100 that it wasn’t.
“previously of good character” aka not been prosecuted before.
Seriously though, who cares? What a stupid law.
I gamble every day when I use the roads here, I guarantee the police will never bother with this.
How is this any different from my kids school raffle, or the annual petrol competition Rubis put on around Christmas time?
Two are legal and one is not.
Sounds pretty petty to me.
You elect the legislators.
I think the focus of the question was trying to determine the substance of the issue, rather than the letter of the law.
But you knew that, and typed the clownery above anyway.
wow, I hadn’t read your comment and just posted something similar which will show up in time I hope. High Five!!
Thanks Sherlock, however you’re missing the point of the comment. Which of course you knew, but wanted to be sanctimonious. There’s enough sanctimonious people in the world already. Be better.
The big difference are the police-sanctioned gang-affiliated Loan sharks openly preying on addicts and gamblers, extending unsecured lines of credit, leveraging dim prospects of a win against their future self-determination and/or property. The house always wins, and sometimes people get killed along this oppressive pathway.
Have been saying this for ever. Finally someone shares the thoughts. Especially St Ignatius CHURCH
Losing more than you are getting everyday, the addiction is so serious, people have become so poor and can’t even buy food to eat hahaha.
If these ladies wanted to show how wide spread the buying of #s is here in Cayman, if they rat out the buyers there will be very few people working in CIG including the police force. Hypocrisy to the maximum.
Buying a ticket from a numbers person, school, charity, service club etc it is all still a gamble because you buy the ticket in hopes of winning something.
For peace of mind, let’s have the bloody Referendum. Stop messing around the issue. Let the people have our say.
Funny how simple things is a big issue. Police Customs Immigration just to mention a few is a part of number buyers here. But when things don’t go their way they are who cry wolf. Most people would love to win big to pay bills, buy a home or piece of land. Selling raffle ticket is still gambling stop talking bulls.
Thousands of traffic violations daily go unpunished
Just yesterday, we witnessed 2 cars overtaking others obeying the speed limits on the busy WB road tourist corridor at a high rate of speed, one of which had illegal window tint, as a taxi van was following us too closely.
Some fool undertook me using the hard shoulder on the Esterly the other day. These things don’t even surprise me anymore as the roads are basically un policed. And they will remain un policed as clearly the RCIPS don’t give a F***.
Prosecute for Illegal Billboards!
meanwhile 3/4 the police force buy numbers daily.
Are you sure they are registered voters?
Bring on the lottery!
Bothering no one. What a stupid law
What else to do on this rock? Let them gamble.
pass the Bill now. why are we allowing this crime to go on. are we waiting for another murder.
We (the people) are waiting on a referendum.
We(the people) are still waiting on our cruise port referendum.
What about those with illegal billboards? Have they been prosecuted?
Every weekend the public are harassed outside major stores to buy tickets of some kind or support one thing or another. Why aren’t the people selling raffle tickets arrested?
these people have a license to sell legally for charitable/community causes….duh
It’s still gambling
Legally/illegally. These wait for you to come to them whilst your legal gambling runners accost you as you go about your daily life doing something as simple as buying groceries, or whatever overpriced item being peddled by ALT that week. I’d rather the one that just leaves me alone.
Probably because the law was changed to accommodate them.
Welcome to Cayscam
If you read the law, that is freely available online for anyone, you would know the answer, rather than wasting time posting ridiculous whataboutery.
You might want to understand what ‘whataboutery’ means. The post is a about ‘gambling’. No ‘whataboutery’ present. It focuses on gambling being illegal, but selectively. The law says ““gambling” means to play at any game, whether of skill or chance, for money or money’s worth”. Then it defines ‘raffles’ as exempt. The law contradicts itself.
The whataboutery was “why aren’t the people selling raffle tickets arrested”, and the answer is, because that is not illegal so is irrelevant. The question posed was not “why is selling raffle tickets not illegal”, but “why are they not arrested”.
Glad to assist you in your confusion, as the rest of your post demonstrates that reading is not your strong point. Raffles are not exempt by any stretch in the law and are often cited as a punishable offence. The only exemption is raffles for churches, service organizations and other voluntary associations to raise funds for the programmes of the respective churches, organizations and associations. Always happy to help the underinformed and kids who “don’t read so good.”
Mr Smart ass has entered the chat room.
It must s..k to be corrected!
Don’t know if these two women were little but they certainly aren’t old. Just saying!
Hmm might explain why the changes to the gambling law have been delayed in Parliament! What constituencies are these women registered to vote in ? Please don’t tell me it’s GTC??!!!
The GTC MP seems to be hell bent on not supporting the amendments.
GTC MP seems adamant that the referendum must come first before amendments to the Gambling Act are considered.
What about those who purchased from them? Weren’t they also guilty of breaking the law?
Stop the witch hunt as they are only selling to the little old ladies that are heading to the bar for a little drink!
Everyone is of good character until they chose not to be. Our judges are weakening law and order and rewriting sentencing guidance based on subjective character references from a time machine penned by their best repeat customers. Throw the book at crooks – especially those pleading not guilty. Please.
How about the law that any shop using their storefront to sell numbers has their T&BL canceled at DCI. One strike and you’re out. What’s the start date on that?
Good point. Department of Commerce Enforcement Unit is who that complaint should be made to.
Soon come, there you have your answer.
Check Foster’s airport on a Sunday when the reliable cleaners are working. Jamaican security guard usually be brazenly selling numbers to them next to the door by the ATM.
Yes, I heard “lemme get 42” and saw him writing on a notepad with money exchanged.. the atm is like 10 feet away from the door.
Small fine; why am I not surprised. So they will be back in business shortly and easily pay off their ‘small fine.’ This is Cayman, this is the way!
Can’t break the law, even if you disagree with it.
It’s illegal to do more than 40 mph on the ETH but I’m quite sure if you were bleeding out you’d push the gas.
They were likely just as desperate in this economy..
This is a slippery slope into lawlessness.
Same logic means I should steal from Blackbeards when I’m thirsty. Nice
And now they want to prosecute for feeding a wild fowl. The circus thats coming from Cuba for the Ag Show, has nothing compared to the clowns we have leading us.
