(CNS): Four women who appeared in Grand Court Friday all admitted that they had sold lottery tickets. The women, who have been charged under the gambling law, were caught selling the tickets near Archie’s Bar bar on Shedden Road, George Town, during a police bust in March last year. The women, aged between 19 and 47, were all previously of good character, the court heard, but they now have criminal convictions. They are expected to be sentenced Tuesday, but as the law currently stands, they are likely to face a small fine.

“previously of good character” aka not been prosecuted before.

Seriously though, who cares? What a stupid law.

How is this any different from my kids school raffle, or the annual petrol competition Rubis put on around Christmas time?

I think the focus of the question was trying to determine the substance of the issue, rather than the letter of the law.

But you knew that, and typed the clownery above anyway.

Thanks Sherlock, however you’re missing the point of the comment. Which of course you knew, but wanted to be sanctimonious. There’s enough sanctimonious people in the world already. Be better.

The big difference are the police-sanctioned gang-affiliated Loan sharks openly preying on addicts and gamblers, extending unsecured lines of credit, leveraging dim prospects of a win against their future self-determination and/or property. The house always wins, and sometimes people get killed along this oppressive pathway.

If these ladies wanted to show how wide spread the buying of #s is here in Cayman, if they rat out the buyers there will be very few people working in CIG including the police force. Hypocrisy to the maximum.

Buying a ticket from a numbers person, school, charity, service club etc it is all still a gamble because you buy the ticket in hopes of winning something.

For peace of mind, let’s have the bloody Referendum. Stop messing around the issue. Let the people have our say.

Funny how simple things is a big issue. Police Customs Immigration just to mention a few is a part of number buyers here. But when things don’t go their way they are who cry wolf. Most people would love to win big to pay bills, buy a home or piece of land. Selling raffle ticket is still gambling stop talking bulls.

Just yesterday, we witnessed 2 cars overtaking others obeying the speed limits on the busy WB road tourist corridor at a high rate of speed, one of which had illegal window tint, as a taxi van was following us too closely.

Some fool undertook me using the hard shoulder on the Esterly the other day. These things don’t even surprise me anymore as the roads are basically un policed. And they will remain un policed as clearly the RCIPS don’t give a F***.

If you read the law, that is freely available online for anyone, you would know the answer, rather than wasting time posting ridiculous whataboutery.

      • Anonymous says:

You might want to understand what ‘whataboutery’ means. The post is a about ‘gambling’. No ‘whataboutery’ present. It focuses on gambling being illegal, but selectively. The law says ““gambling” means to play at any game, whether of skill or chance, for money or money’s worth”. Then it defines ‘raffles’ as exempt. The law contradicts itself.

        3
        • Logic 101 says:

The whataboutery was “why aren’t the people selling raffle tickets arrested”, and the answer is, because that is not illegal so is irrelevant. The question posed was not “why is selling raffle tickets not illegal”, but “why are they not arrested”.

Glad to assist you in your confusion, as the rest of your post demonstrates that reading is not your strong point. Raffles are not exempt by any stretch in the law and are often cited as a punishable offence. The only exemption is raffles for churches, service organizations and other voluntary associations to raise funds for the programmes of the respective churches, organizations and associations. Always happy to help the underinformed and kids who “don’t read so good.”

Everyone is of good character until they chose not to be. Our judges are weakening law and order and rewriting sentencing guidance based on subjective character references from a time machine penned by their best repeat customers. Throw the book at crooks – especially those pleading not guilty. Please.
