Shop owner runs off armed robber

| 04/11/2023 | 45 Comments

(CNS): Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery at a convenience store in Bodden Town on Friday night. The masked man, dressed all in black and wearing a hoodie, was carrying a handgun when he entered the store on Bodden Town Road, east of Cumber Avenue, at about 8pm and demanded cash. But the store owner grabbed a machete and ran after the would-be robber, chasing him from the premises.

No shots were fired and no one was injured as the only customer in the store ran out as soon as the robber entered. Nothing was taken during the incident. The store owner picked up a machete from under the counter as the gunman entered and yelled at him, calling him a “crazy boy”, according to the CCTV footage above.

This was one of three attempted armed robberies on Friday night. There was also a street robbery in West Bay.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Department at 949-4222. Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or the website.

Kudos to the shop owner for standing up to that punk and chasing him off quickly – However this could have played out very very differently. Fortunately, in this instance, the shop owner won.

I am behooved to say this store clerk clearly grew up in the 80s … Rambo, Terminator, WWF wrestling… he’s got balls that’s for sure! He should sell t-shirts of him holding a machete outside his store with the caption “Not today Bobo”
    Those shirts would sell!

I prefer Son Son. A real hero. If only our politicians had the same drive to protect our culture, heritage, environment and our way of life we could just have a little of cayman for Caymanians. Honorable Gourzong, you are a great example of protecting your own.

To Anonymous 05/11/2023: Some are expats, but many are young Caymanians who get tired of applying for employment and not getting a chance. Before we jump to conclusions, let us come together and back our youth’s efforts to claim their place in our community.

You are such an enabler saying that it’s because people are getting denied jobs. nothing could be easier or more lucrative than being a Caymanian. problem is you have to be willing to do the job, possibly start from the bottom and work up.

criminals will be criminals no matter what a job is not going to stop them from being a criminal. The problem here is too many baby daddies not enough actual family units with morals.

We need to stop using this excuse about young people can’t get jobs. These types of young people don’t want no job!!! They prefer to violently force other hard working people to divest of their hard earned possessions. They have the ability to access a gun (whether real or not) and you really think this type of person out there looking work. I beg to differ.

Bullshit 10:56. If this took place at Neevil McCoys store, just check the the houses all around, one even right next door to Webster Church, yards full of derelict vehicles, young men hanging around doing nothing but listening to Jamaican music, crappy surroundings showing no pride in self or property. These didn’t apply for employment, they wouldn’t know what that is. Drink beer smoke dope go to Coe Wood beach to shoot shit with other wurtless riff raff, that’s their life. And just maybe try to rob a store to get some money for more dope.

      • Anonymous says:

I didn’t say it wasn’t Caymanians doing it 8:19. I just mentioned that the music was Jamaican not necessarily those people listening to it. But those guys hanging out there are Caymanian and Jamaica-Caymanian plus Jamaican. Bodden Town full of them and doing nothing all day.

Excellent camera quality. The government should fund cameras for all residents. The CCTV alone can’t work. Need to blanket the Islands with cameras on all properties both outside and inside. While this alone will not solve the bigger issue, a camera at some point is bound to pick up these thugs when they unmask or a are bold enough to commit the crime barefaced.

    quickly rcips and odpp!

first cross reference the suspect list against your kin and affiliates.

    then check your hit list.

then have it approved by your handlers.

ready, set, go. but first, have a meeting about the last meeting where yall met to formulate the plan which has not yet been formally approved due to budget constraints while everything is prepared for the boxes to be ticked by people who literally, and fucking surprisingly, care less than yall. make sure the command room minutes are well documented and there are at least 12 attendees with no “apologies” whatsoever bc even I’ll be damned to learn that senior management wouldn’t respond to the NUMEROUS instances of SERIOUS crime whilst flooding the judiciary with pointless matters that do nothing more than line the pockets of the defense attorneys and prosecutors out of LEGAL AID funds that we, the people of the Cayman Islands – who, as shown here – are quite literally being fucking robbed, are paying for.

The store owner was not calling him “crazy boy”, but rather the store owner was asking a rhetorical question: “Are you crazy boy?” is how it translates in realistic application.

Likely either a replica handgun, or an air gun. Air guns can be lethal, however when faced with a rushing machete-wielding giant, a prudent criminal would flee.

Good on you, Sir. Very glad you weren’t hurt.

Yes. Gel pepper. It’s the new thing. Directional spray which is less likely in wind to fold back on the person delivering it. We NEED to be able to defend ourselves. Why would our government not want that to be so?

Of course, all the members of Cabinet have resources and bodyguards and systems which keep them safe. Why should they not understand our strife? Step up, elected members.
