Mask mandate remains in place, officials warn

Health Minister Sabrina Turner

(CNS): Restaurants and bars that are telling customers they no longer need to have masks and whose staff are no longer covering their faces are breaking the COVID-19 regulations, Public Health officials have said.

Despite the widespread flouting of mask mandates and social distancing rules, the regulations remain in place until the end of this first period of the phased return of cruise ships, the officials confirmed to CNS Friday. However, some relaxation of visitor restrictions has been implemented today.

Following numerous emails and messages from readers that well-known bars and restaurants in the Seven Mile Beach area were waiving mask mandates and telling customers that all regulations will be dropped this weekend, Public Health officials said the rules will not change until towards the end of April.

“The regulations currently in place include a mandate to wear masks indoors,” Public Health told CNS. “As mentioned at the last press briefing, the plan is to review the situation after several weeks of cruise tourism, and based on the findings, determine whether to maintain or amend the regulations. At this time, it would be premature to speculate on what changes may or may not come into effect.”

The current regulations require all individuals to wear a mask indoors if they are not able to socially distance, unless the person is unable to wear a mask or cloth face covering due to a medical condition or the person is otherwise exempted by guidance provided by the medical officer of health.

People sitting at their desks at work or school and customers of a restaurant or bar sitting at a table or counter do not need to wear a mask. But when entering and walking around customers should still cover their faces and staff should wear masks or cloth face coverings while serving customers.

However, government has made changes to the regulations relating to restrictions on visitors to the Cayman Islands.

Restrictions on travellers from countries with a vaccination rate lower than 60% for the first dose of an approved vaccine have been removed. Any vaccinated person can now travel to the Islands without being subject to quarantine on arrival if they complete the pre-arrival test, fill in the medical questionnaire and take a medical exam if a Customs and Border Control (CBC) Officer considers it necessary, submit a travel declaration form and have evidence to support it.

Unaccompanied Caymanian resident children or those with close ties under the age of 12 years, even if unvaccinated, will not be required to isolate if they are staying in a household where all other occupants 12 years and over are vaccinated.

Unaccompanied unvaccinated children will be required to quarantine if they are staying in a place where an unvaccinated person over the age of 12 is also residing. Unaccompanied unvaccinated visitor children are still not allowed to travel to the Cayman Islands.

Health and Wellness Minister Sabrina Turner said that “as we welcome the relaxation of additional travel restrictions, we cannot disregard how much compliance with COVID-19 regulations has contributed to us arriving to this juncture. With more persons arriving to our shores daily, I urge the public to remain aware by getting their COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and following public health guidelines to prevent infection”.

Government has also stopped paying the costs of accommodation at a quarantine facility or isolation for most travellers. Most of the changes are expected to increase airline and visitor traffic at Owen Roberts International Airport by supporting more family travel this summer.

The Control of Covid-19 (Travel) (No. 2) Regulations, 2022 are scheduled to expire on 31 May 2022 and can be viewed here.

There’s something not quite right about this Health Minister, at the very least she does seem to be rather rude and i have no idea how she’s got a position in a public-facing role. I’m also not convinced she’s remotely qualified but in Cayman it seems that’s not a problem in the public or private sector anyhow.

As to Covid, i’m completely lost at this stage. People get covid wether they have 5 vaccinations or none or any number in between. People die with/from/of (who knows anymore, did we ever really know?) covid regardless of vaccination status – its all coming down to age/underlying illness..just like any illness.

Why there are any restrictions at all is perplexing. The Health Minister is pictured wearing a cloth mask – there are multiple reports on CNN and everywhere else that show these do not stop covid, the covid particles are not even 1/100th the size of the holes in the cloth. This is all completely bizarre behavior.

Why vaccinated people who have NOT had a booster or a 4/5th jab inside last 3 months think they are protected is beyond me, they are not protected. Your efficiacy is below 50%, its basically non existent. And yet, and yet, government think its normal to maintain quarantine on those who have not had any vaccine for covid whilst allowing those who are not protected but took a vaccine last year to avoid quarantine.

There is no science here guys, there is only naive politics. It must all end.

    • Anonymous says:

Actually, unless you are conspiracy theorist and don’t believe anything about the vaccines, you get long-lasting protection from serious illness and death, not catching the virus.

That’s the science – the boosters give you short-lived protection from catching it (to what degree seems to be in dispute).

As for the behaviour of the Health Minister you are absolutely correct.

People are realizing that there’s not a truly compelling reason to visit Cayman. The “Island’s” fear of the covid bogeyman is only going to make rebuilding the economy more difficult. Sure, we can all list off the reasons that we love Cayman, but ease of travel to and from is one of the most important. Cayman is one of the very few places on earth that is still living in fear of a virus that isn’t going away. Everyone who wanted to get the shot has, time to move forward.

Trust people to make their own judgement! Persons who were vaccinated including booster shot are getting covid and isolating themselves. No different than getting the flu. You don’t feel well, you stay home. Simple as that. Get rid of it all before Easter so we could all enjoy the holiday as days gone by.

I’d like to see the current science HSA is relying on that demonstrates that unvaccinated people who test negative pose a greater threat of transmitting the virus compared to vaccinated. It doesn’t exist.

So if you return home with your unvaccinated healthy 13 year old who tested negative, he or she will need to quarantine in the same house as other vaccinated adults as though they tested positive. After that, it makes no difference and no distinctions are made going forward.
What kind of idiotic reasoning is behind this and why are they doing this?

Sabrina gets yet another ticket to enter the Darwin Awards. How many 9-10 year olds do you think travel unaccompanied and unvaccinated to Cayman? Can we stop with the mandatory insistence on sanitizer going into stores as well. I don’t want those chemicals on my hands, being this sanitized all the time is compromising my immune system.

Is it even legal for them to make you sanitize your hands? Not seen that in the legislation?

That is true, however many people have religious or personal beliefs in regard to the use of alcohol and should not be forced to apply it to their person. It should be non-alcohol based if being used in a public access area.
Sanitiser has no real benefit in the spread of Covid as it is an airborne virus spread through minute droplets and inhaled within a confined space for 15 minutes or more. However, it does ensure that people who don’t wash their hands when leaving a washroom are at least clean. And that is far more important here on Cayman where it seems to be rare amongst certain demographics.
Masks, unless they are N or K95 and above are useless, helping to prevent isn’t the same as prevention and China is proving once again that mask mandates and mass lockdowns do not stop Omicron.

      • Anonymous says:

So if it was acid they sprayed on your hands you would be ok with it as long as it was private property?

    • Covid is over says:

Hand sanitizer does nothing. The rest of the world learned two years ago that Covid is not spread through fomites (particles on physical items), but rather it is airborne.

Anyone advocating using hand sanitizer looks like a backward idiot who either to lazy to read the news, or too stupid to understand it. For visitors from the US and UK, we look like savages.

Ditch hand sanitizer, and let’s drop looking stupid.

These jokes are everywhere, from malfeasence in agencies to the local tour boat operators taking starfish out of the water and justifying it as science and locals agreeing that its harmless, and we all know DOE won’t do a damn thing about it.

Inflation is also a joke. A gallon of petrol costs more than minimum wage and rent is out of control.

And you know what? Nothing will ever fundamentally change.

  17. Anonymous says:

But at work we were told it’s recommended but not mandatory. So guess what, we have a lot (not all) of staff walking about without mask in the office. Pray tell…..

  18. Anonymous says:

So Covid not only recognises that it must stop infecting people when bars close early, but it also understands that it mustn’t infect anyone who walks into an establishment with a mask on, then takes it off when sitting at a table.
It also knows that it can’t infect bar patrons if there are less than the government prescribed customer numbers present, or once the patron takes off their mask to enjoy conversation, food, and drink. Wow, that’s one clever bug.
Masks clearly do not prevent the spread of Covid, neither do lockdowns, otherwise the Chinese wouldn’t be locking down the biggest city in the world after two years of the same. The Chinese, along with many other Asian countries have worn masks in society and whilst travelling for decades, yet they are still in the grip of increasing infections.
The reason we can confidently question the effectiveness of masks is obvious, but what cannot be denied is the effectiveness of the vaccine regimes.
China is failing to control Covid because it has incredibly low vaccine rates in the face of Omicron coupled with the possibility of an ineffective vaccine in the first place.
Infection rates aren’t the problem, the failure to protect with vaccines to avoid serious illness and death certainly is. Pictures of politicians wearing useless cloth masks just compound the publics skepticism, everyone now knows the only really effective mask is an N95 or it’s equivalent, so why try and maintain a discredited edict and continue wearing a fashion accessory, not a proven protective device.
Get vaccinated and get on with living, masks should be kept for medical facilities and Halloween.

  19. Dennis Connor says:

They all making us look like a fool!! Especially those that are vaccinated and still have to wear a mask mask 😷 that’s telling anyone with a little bit of common sense how fool our leaders is , to me if had to be vaccinated and turn around and wear a mask that would tell me right away that the mask is safer than the vaccine.

  29. Pastor Alfredo says:

Thanks for the update and yet another finger wagging warning, Sabrina. Here’s an update back at you. The mask mandate finished months ago when half the island contracted covid in the space of a few weeks despite travel Cayman and their immigration declarations, social distancing rules, vaccination requirements and all the other rules that it turned out made virtually no difference whatsoever. Not only that, the overwhelming majority of people that got it felt a little rough for a day or two and then got on with their lives, as we’ve known for well over a year now.

It turns out that grown adults with a reasonable understanding of risk/reward and sprinkling of common sense can actually come to their own conclusions on things as individuals and make their own call about whether or not they want to adhere to stupid rules that have zero grounding in logic.

It’s not march 2020. There is no health emergency. Making people wear masks made out of socks for the ten yard walk between the front door of a restaurant and their table does absolutely nothing except discourage custom. Which is why no one is bothering and why absolutely no one except for you cares.

And can someone please explain to me how wearing a mask when you walk in a restaurant or bar then take it off the moment you sit down helps or has ever helped reduce the spread of Covid? Covid doesn’t spread when you are seated? You breath more when you are walking? I’ve never understood the “science” behind this rule and it’s been used all over the world…but did it, does it or will it ever make a difference?

It’s hard to understand a “science” that doesn’t exist.

You can still spread Covid when you are seated and speaking to others at the table. Droplets of spit comes out of your mouth when you speak and lands on the plates of others at your table and theirs on your plate – – enjoy your meal!!! HAHA

All BS. 8,000 cruise shippers can come ashore and walk in and out of shops and restaurants without a mask but all the local slaves must adhere to the nonsensical mandate. What a joke this country truly is. Time to move to Florida.

I was recently on the island as a cruise ship passenger. We were told aboard the ship of the covid rules and mask wearing before we arrived. Any stores or restaurants that we went into, we wore our masks. All of the stores that we visited had signs posted and we followed them. Very unfair to say that all cruise ship passengers were exempt from any rules of your island.
