COVID-19 case rate numbers still falling

| 13/12/2021 | 79 Comments

(CNS): There was good news from Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee in his daily report on Monday, which revealed that there were just 85 positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend, all coming from the community. Public Health officials carried out 2,128 PCR tests over the three days between 8am on Friday and 8am Monday, giving a positive test rate of just under 4%. There are currently 3,475 active cases of the virus, with 14 people still admitted to hospital. But there are no active cases at all in the Sister Islands.

Meanwhile, the current number of people who have had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine stands at 58,489 people, or 82% of the population. 56,732 individuals (80%) have had two shots and 14,378 people (19%) have had a booster.

Too much fear over Omicron. Will already be in cayman, unavoidable, you are well protected with your booster, and it seems to be less severe than Delta. The restrictions we have are adequate enough – let’s carry on, Cayman doing great so far.

The only reason humanity is still dealing with COVID in 2022 is that most G20 Governments were unwilling to do what was necessary to limit transmission and starve the virus of new hosts. Willingness to ensure 6 foot buffers when dealing with an aerosol disease is still the problem, and that doesn’t get sterilized with obsolete vaccine doses or go away with collective resigned surrender.

    • Anonymous says:

Yeah all the G20s fault – because the rest of the world was doing exactly that – NOT. its a global pandemic – as long as any major country that has citizens that travel doesn’t do the same, the only way put is vaccination and awaiting the eventual mutation into less lethal forms.

      • Anonymous says:

Vaccines do not neutralise infectious pathogens on contact. For the time being, they improve odds of a shorter journey, and maybe a better outcome depending on other factors. Regardless of prognosis, all positives are still quarantined and out of the work force/regular life for weeks. That interruption should be reason enough to earn the virus more respect, so we mask up, and distance 6 feet, as required by Emergency Health Orders, (supposedly) in force.

Well, aren’t you a jolly little soul! Give it a rest. we’ve been putting up with this for 2 years. Let people have their parties. The conservatives in the UK still did despite locking everyone up previously. ‘Rules for thee but not for me’ stance. And no one is putting up with it anymore and rightly so.

  4. Anonymous says:

Everybody knows that the true incidence is much higher. People are simply either not testing themselves as intended or they are hiding positive results in order to avoid any inconvenience. Omicron loves that approach.

  5. Anonymous says:

Today the UK Parliament approved vaccine passports for clubs and large venues. The mandate does not extend to restaurants but they probably will regret that they did not do that.

    • Anonymous says:

Omicron loves this plan because the vaccines are being proven to be ineffective in many cases against it.

    • Anonymous says:

Vaccine mandates are pointless. Only a totalitarian or a fool would continue to rationalize their use given the past year of failed reasoning and results. The vaccine is only good for the individual when it isn’t causing severe damage. Sadly in many cases it is doing more harm than good.

      • Anonymous says:

Past year of failed results? You want to compare death and hos[italisation rates between vaccinated and non vaccinated?

    • Mumbichi says:

What are you so afraid of, that you would espouse such a draconian ideal?

    • Anonymous says:

You do realize the vaccines don’t stop infection with Omicron? So the mandate will accomplish nothing.

    • Anonymous says:

It’s not about vaccinations or access. It’s about masking and providing others with 6 feet when in public – not to necessarily protect yourself, but to protect the 8 others you could infect and not know. 2 years on and non-compliance is still the pivotal issue worldwide.

    • Anonymous says:

A month or two from now, leaving our homes will hinge on whether our daily LFT result is negative or not. $4 a day will be the ticket price for thoughtful people to assemble freely in public during a global health pandemic. Not the worst idea tbh.

      • Anonymous says:

Yes it is the worst idea – terrible idea tbh. What kind of dystopian nightmare do you want to live in?

Fauci’s views on Omicron based on the evidence to date :

“Early data about the Omicron coronavirus variant presents “a very strong argument for people getting their boosters,” according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

“Omicron is going to be a challenge because it spreads very rapidly, and the vaccines that we use — the regular two-dose mRNA — don’t do very well against infection itself. But particularly if you get the boost, it is pretty good,” Fauci told CNN.”

    • Anonymous says:

3:34 Does anyone really trust what Fauci has to say anymore? The man changes his medical opinion like a girl changes clothes (Katy Perry come in with the chorus)

      • Anonymous says:

LOL well people still trust Trump LOL

      • Anonymous says:

I would think he changes his opinion based on the science and what the researchers and scientist discover as they continue their research. You must admit we are not having near as many deaths since the vaccines have come into play.

I would rather listen to him than Kattina, Izzy or Mario or DR. T for that matter, as none of them are virologists or epidemiologists.

    • Anonymous says:

The USA was abutting the debt-ceiling and Fauci was called in to stabilise G20 western economies, soothe financial panic, and retain some semblance of economic normalcy ahead of inevitable interruptions. Omicron seemed at first, anecdotally, to be milder in fully boostered, and so far in countries like South Africa where their median age is just 27. Epic transmissibility and immune avoidance suggests this wave will test hospital capacity on a scale we’ve never seen. This is already playing out in EU, and even certain Canadian cities, and we can observe that, instruct ourselves, or pretend this data doesn’t exist.

Omicron – nothing to worry about say those who know nothing

“The UK has recorded another 59,610 Covid cases, the highest figure since early January, as it faces what prime minister Boris Johnson has called a “tidal wave” on infections from the Omicron variant.

A further 150 people died within 28 days of a positive test, according to the latest data from the government’s coronavirus dashboard.”

    • Anonymous says:

1:04 But how many of these individuals died of the Omicron variant!? this is a key fact that is not being made clear. Also if you look at the office of national Statistics website in the UK there is no evidence of a significant increase in hospitalizations due to covid. The number has stabilized. Give it a rest will you?

  9. Anonymous says:

The news out today is that people can be infected with both the Delta variant and the Omicron variant at the same time meaning it is much harder for even a healthy immune system to cope.

“In the UK, Dr Paul Burton, chief medical officer at Moderna, has been speaking to MPs on the Commons science and technology committee…
“I think in the coming months these two viruses are going to co-exist, and Omicron, which I would maintain is actually a severe disease, will now infect people on a background of very, very strong Delta pressure.

It will also lead to a situation where individuals will become co-infected…which gives the opportunity for this virus to further evolve and mutate which is a concerning and worrying situation.”

      • Anonymous says:

Mocking folks that are keeping up with an evolving public health threat, isn’t going to fend off mass-absenteeism, from an anticipated case tsunami. Probably the opposite. Positive cases and primary contacts, regardless of symptoms, are still not allowed to “work properly” like it’s 2019.

I just love how the media is spinning this here and making it seem like the cases are dropping because we finally went from 79% to 80% vax rate and not one mention about how public health lowered the CT value from 40 to 32.

We did a great job vs our first Delta wave. High levels of double vaccinated population and good use of masks, well done us.
Unfortunately Omicron is coming, and the 3rd shot is necessary. It’s a different strain, it’s highly transmissible and it can evade two-doses (and has also had no problem infecting people who had recovered from a previous Covid infection).
Don’t get complacent, get boosted and get ready. There’s a reason why the U.K., France, Germany, Austria, Israel, Denmark, the USA, and most other wealthy nations are racing to get people fully vaccinated and implementing stronger protective measures.

This is not over, inconvenient to your holiday plans as it may be

    • Anonymous says:

9:12 Please do clarify what the reason is for this mad scramble perpetrated by the likes of the UK, France, etc? There is a lot of fear-mongering over omicron, however, the evidence seems to point at it being extremely mild. Apparently, one person in the UK has died but the government is being very vague on the facts. Did this person have underlying health issues for instance? There are nearly 5000 cases in the UK but I can’t find any evidence of any of the people with this variant being incredibly ill. You put a lot of emphasis on it “not being over”. But when will it be over!? This virus is going to be with us for a while. We need to start getting on with our lives and not wetting our pants every time a new variant comes out. I’m so done with all of this now. I’ve got all 3 jabs. Enough of this fearmongering.

        • Anonymous says:

You aren’t fully vaccinated against anything. Which vaccine prevents covid or the common cold?

          NONE

      • Anonymous says:

Other countries have looked at the mutations of the spike protein and the vaccine evasion data combined with the high transmission data and the fact that there is a delta surge, and concluded, correctly that omicron is a public health threat, since even a small percentage of a huge number getting sick when hospitals are already stretched is dangerous.

        Hope that helps.

        #exponentialgrowth
Ps: hospitalizations lag cases and deaths lag hospitalizations.

        • Anonymous says:

1:36 No it doesn’t help as you haven’t provided any proof to your points. Where is the evidence that hospitals are currently stretched? This has been the rhetoric in the UK for months but has been proven to be factually incorrect. If you look at the office of national statistics for UK hospitals admissions (due to covid) have stabilized as of October. I am perfectly aware that there are often lags in the data but evidence now shows that the Omicron variant has been present for months now but only recently detected. We cant keep losing our heads every time the virus mutates. Our lives must go on and the economy will suffer in the long run with more restrictions. It could be argued that this poses a larger threat to the human population.

cayman is in a good position due to high vax rate. to maintain this we need similar take-up of booster. booster take-up is not great and nowhere near original vax levels.
to incentivise the booster syatem cig must bring in vax passport system showing your vax status.
in jan you will be unable to travel in europe without having vax or booster in last 6 months

Are the public expected to call 9-1-1 and file a report if they’re in a business, bank, bar, restaurant, or supermarket where nobody is masking properly or keeping 6 feet? Is there a plain-clothes COVID health inspection unit, or task force that can attend and give the managers one of these fabled tickets they are asking for? 7000 recorded cases in this community wave.

66000 population according to the almost complete census.

    56000 people double jabbed.

    10000 unvaccinated.

    65% of the 7000 cases (4500) unvaccinated.

That means there’s only 5500 unvaccinated people left to catch the virus. The majority of which are kids who won’t even know they have it. As a proportion of the population hardly any of the vaccinated have caught covid.

    • Anonymous says:

The population is much higher than 66,000. The ESO data is both incomplete and grossly misleading. They do not count thousands of people living here whether as snowbirds, temporary work permit holders, or many classes of dependents.

      • C'Mon Now! says:

The numbers are highly likely to be much better than you think.

The knock on every door over multiple occasions and in Cayman they ask neighbours and staff if residences are occupied.

Might it be undercounted possibly, some people will be missed and some people will lie to the census taker. But overall the population is lower than 71k at this point in time.

      • Anonymous says:

Doesn’t make much difference to the analysis. The reported cases are a significant proportion of the unvaccinated population, and a very small fraction of the vaccinated population. Doesn’t matter if you use 71000 or 66000 as a base number: you are WAY more likely to catch it if unvaccinated, and even more likely to be hospitalized than a vaccinated person who catches it. I know the anti vaxxers don’t like to hear that but the numbers are pretty clear.

    • Anonymous says:

So Omicron can reinfect those who have had the Delta strain and those with just 2 jabs are also at risk.

so only 14,0000 of the 66,000 population are “safe”

and 52,000 people are at risk from Omicron, or 78% of the population.

      Nothing to worry about

  19. Anon says:

Unvaccinated kids with day 2, 5, 10 LFT is totally sufficient. We let them go to school after close contact with positive, we might as well allow them to travel if they have vaccinated parents.

Yes, perhaps vaccinated for immune recognition of the original strain from 2 years ago, but not protected fully against the heavily-mutated Omicron voc. Breakout case percentages are climbing everywhere. Health authorities need to be paying attention and not parroting misplaced political economic agendas during an evolving global pandemic. There is a serious economic cost to having 30-40% of a population in health quarantine simultaneously.
