CMO deflects from high COVID cases to low admissions
(CNS): Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee sought to deflect attention from the very high number of positive COVID-19 cases recorded Wednesday toward the low hospital admissions, as he presented the updated figures in a video on Thursday. The CMO said that just 27% of the beds that could be set aside for COVID patients without impacting the usual service provision were being used, and that the Health Services Authority and its private sector partners could cope easily with the hospitalisation of 55 patients and had plans to cope with more if necessary.
In a video message about the large number of new community cases, Dr Lee said he “wanted to try and shift where we’re focusing our concerns, because… this really is more in terms of how our healthcare services are being used.”
He said that most people who were positive had no symptoms or mild symptoms and were managing well at home. “Many people with COVID will have very mild symptoms, maybe a fever, maybe a cough and will be able to take simple paracetamol, and after a few days… just like with many viral illnesses, will feel quite well again.”
On Monday senior staff from all three hospitals on Grand Cayman conducted a table top exercise via Zoom, along with Hazard Management, the Deputy Governor’s Office and the Cabinet Office, to discuss how they would manage 40 patients with COVID, then 100 patients, then 200 patients, in a stress test scenario to see exactly what they would do, he said.
“All of the hospitals already had plans, but we really wanted to see how these plans would work together as a whole, as part of our planning for the reopening process. What we discovered was that the number of beds that would be given over to COVID and still allow routine operations to go ahead would be 55. That means that the elective surgeries would continue, the clinics would continue and across all of the three hospitals 55 COVID patients could be looked after.”
This meant that with the current 15 admissions to the Cayman Islands Hospital, as there are none in the Doctors Hospital or Health City, only 27% of the available capacity that the hospitals have put aside to look after COVID-19 patients is being utilized at present.
“That leaves us in a good position,” he said. “We are managing the numbers that we have. We’ve been in this scenario with positive community cases for some nine weeks now, and you’ll be aware that in many countries around the world these so-called waves of infection as they travel through the community and a lot of people get infected often take around two to three months to begin to see them burning out.
“Ours may be burning out a little bit slower because we put in measures particularly to dampen down the infection. So masks, distancing, hand hygiene, our very high vaccination rates and also the lateral flow test being used and the policy being rolled out, all of these things will dampen down the spread of Sars-COV-2.”
Dr Lee also said that while there were 15 patients in the hospital as of Thursday morning, nine of whom had been admitted since Tuesday and eight had been discharged over the same period. So although more people have been admitted to hospital, some are going home, so the number actually admitted is fluctuating, “which is again good news because people are getting better, they’re being well-treated and they’re going home.”
With the long weekend approaching, Dr Lee urge people to keep their socializing outside where it’s safer and to hold off from having big gatherings, which was “the wise and sensible thing to do when we have such widespread community transmission”.
He urged people to be careful of those who are unvaccinated, such as children, and for the more vulnerable members of our elderly population.

It shows just influential “talking heads” can be in todays media/social media! Out of nowhere but because of the pandemic, a year ago Dr. Lee became a star and now he’s crap! The fickle minds of the times! Shallow!
Dr. Lee has been CMO before and throughout this pandemic, nothing more, nothing less. He is the Government’s most senior medical advisor. He has coordinated, advised on and presented two Government’s covid pandemic policies. Nothing more (I’m talking covid, not any DE case), nothing less. In other words, his job. No one is going to please everyone in any job, but apparently he did enough in some people’s eyes to deserve a royal award.
I don’t believe that fulfilling the requirements of one’s post necessarily justifies such recognition but of course variables exist case-by-case and the pandemic clearly favoured this selection. But I don’t agree with the sentiment of Dr. Lee “handing back” his award. It is what it is.
For that matter, some of our own blood Caymanians with royal awards, who have disgraced the dignity of what the awards once meant, should have theirs revoked too! I don’t hear anyone calling for certain MPs to hand back their gongs!
The difference in Dr Lee is simple and its silly you cannot see this.
A year ago Dr Lee was ahead of a pandemic lead by a competent government who knew what they were doing and did it.
Today, sadly, Dr Lee is being lead by utter incompetency and is being pushed to be out front to say “the ship is not sinking, we are okay” as water is rising steadily all around him. No wonder he is looking forward to leaving. He is being forced to keep up the charades.
People we are taking on water. This reopening will be a massive failure.

I honestly thought we all have direct access.
I cannot take a vaccine that may have involved the use of animals.
I grew up with dogs, cats, chickens, pigeons, so I see them as pets not pests and it’s the humans responsibility to care for and protect them.
My heart is hurting because they are being killed, but I know I need to take a look into my own life to eliminate that which is contributing to animal cruelty also.
Therefore, I am no less guilty so I need to change me.
Then will try to make you see and hopefully you will pay it forward.
It’s obvious, I do not possess any special power, otherwise this would not be happening.
For the unvaccinated, even recovered we should clean up the health.
⁃ obviously eliminate all animal protein to prevent sicknesses and to transition back to eating what we are to eat.
⁃ See the virus as testing your health, testing how healthy you are.
My opinion
Those with the propensity to change will be easier, as without propensity, there will be no need to change anything.
Everything changes, as we are require to do right now, otherwise we create the they vs. them.
We are responsible to change ourselves, so that we do not have to be told.
This looks like selection to me.
Natural selection in action. Those who, for their own reasons, do not take the vaccine BY CHOICE will be judged by mother nature. If they are wrong in their choice, there will be fewer of them to reproduce in future, continuing the slow grind of evolution of the species, favoring survival of the fittest (mentally as well as physically). It’s a free country, make your choice.
I will have to take my choice with Mother Nature, hope she favors me and understand the reason for my choice.

And all because the vaccine “may” have involved the use of animals. There’s an old saying that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and that’s what social media gives people – a little knowledge (often mixed with lies and half-truths in order to promote an agenda or sell snake oil alternative solutions). It was much easier to just go get the vaccines for polio, measles, hepatitis, typhoid, etc. when people didn’t have to get emotional about how they were made. Now these “enlightened” people are likely to turn their backs on centuries of medical progress and refuse any vaccine. In the not to distant future we could see the return of polio because they think their immune systems can fight anything if they take the right supplement or something. Evolution will indeed sort this out, and there will be a lot of needless suffering.

But as the Government’s CMO his role is to advise on medical matters. In that role he was liaising directly with Public Health UK during the pandemic. Presumably he’s still liaising with PHUK and advising accordingly. Any Government he advises is not bound to follow it. They may choose to be told what they want to hear, and want us to hear..and he’s the mouthpiece!

Governments and media around the world focused on “cases, cases, cases” and pushed that narrative and created a sense of fear around the world. Some people asked to focus on admissions and hospitalizations but they were talked down and ridiculed. They were overlooked and intentionally ignored. The push for “cases cases cases” continued from the majority of governments and media.
A government is currently being scrutinized on the very metrics they harped on for months but NOW is the time to look at hospitalizations. ‘Now is when we need to look at the bigger picture.. Don’t call us out on our errors or mishaps, lets start broadening our scope’. You reap what you sow. You wanted people to be fearful and look to you for shelter and guidance, and now that it’s not going so easily as you planned you just want to breeze over the last several months of narrative you pushed.
Whatever you feel about opening the borders is separate to what I’m trying to highlight. I get the feeling no-one in government is being upfront and honest. There is too many platitudes and even Kenny slipped up to admit there are lies being told in order to get the population to conform. Last official reports said that 4500 people were in isolation because of covid exposure involving them or their contacts. That is around 1/12 of our population.
Meanwhile our Government has not delayed next week’s full re-opening. Government MUST have some criteria where they will make crucial decisions on covid’s continuing impact. Either:
A. They have decided a “trial” opening until say, Jan. 1 to see what the effects of Christmas gatherings will be;
B. They will just pick an arbitrary point and say, “that’s enough” sickness and death, let’s do something else”. Is that when 1/10, 1/8, 1/5, 1/4 of the population get sick..what?;
C. …or they will use the impact on our health services as a gauge and decide to “do something else” when the hospitals are becoming overwhelmed.
I hope they have some contingency instead of just leaving people to wantonly get sick and die, from covid.
Or worse, wait until all hospital beds a taken up by un-vaccinated covid patients and other people with covid or other serious medical issues can’t get treated!!

Public has commented on isolation, quarantine ,pcr ,lfts, sickness vs vaxed ,based on experience from other countries,always prior to CMO statements. CMO statement should be ahead of public postings to gain confidence.
Finally right approach taken.
Numbers are ok in the beginning to be aware of. Now no diff between 200 or 300.
What matters is the result of being positive. If most of positives are mild just with fever and cold or no symptoms we need not worry.
Just good to know only few are hospitalised and getting discharged. Ii is a comfort that vaxed are not that sick.
Let us do our part of masking and social distancing along with covid to manage it as elimination is not the strategy now.

Oddly Dr. Lee did not present additional information such as age and pre-existing conditions which would have made his report more meaningful. The larger take away is that out of 2485 active cases, only 3 people or 0.1207% are in critical care.
It is good news that the remaining 2,470 people who have Covid and are managing their mild symptoms at home. Wishing the 3 people in Critical Care a speedy recovery.

If 15 in the hospital represent 27% of available Covid beds, that means Cayman has a total 56 Covid beds. Elsewhere, hospitalizations typically lag about two weeks behind testing positive. The hospitals are about to get crazy.

Not sure I see the connection. It is too bad that insurance rates are high because of people getting sick from preventable diseases. But you having to pay a lot for insurance doesn’t really compare to someone not getting needed care in hospital because the healthcare system is overwhelmed.
And obviously those diseases that you refer to are not contagious and don’t threaten to overwhelm hospitals. I’m not sure if you are aware of the international news but this has happened in many countries because of unvaccinated covid patients.

Disagree that we should have opened six months ago. Disagree that we should open now. The CIG coffers are doing okay. Those that wanted to come here could, and those that wanted to leave were able. We had a very precious thing that appears now lost.
Was it reasonable to expect that we’d continue to hold our safety bubble? Perhaps not, but we didn’t have to throw it away. I wonder if the spread wasn’t intentional. Finally a shift in focus to what really matters, hospitalizations. There was always too much “noise” in headline case numbers to make them meaningful in a post vaccine era and so they ended up being a harmful distraction.
So we have the highest infection rate in the world and our hospitals aren’t overrun?
I’m not a doctor, even though I sometimes play one on CNS. However, without even staying at a Holiday Inn Express recently, I do know that there is a period of time between exposure to Covid-19 and the onset of symptoms. I hope that the hospitals never get overrun, but a worse case scenario of three new patients per day in the ICU would very quickly cause it to be overrun. Unless you think the ICU is a place where patients go in one day and out the next.

Good Lord, seriously? It’s because a) the infection rate is how many people become infected each day, not how many people are infected in total, and b) we have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world.

We spend so much of our days working for someone else and can barely save for land or houses here after struggling to buy groceries and pay rent.
We are all questioning the purpose of our lives at this point BUT, if we take a step back and not let fear rule our thoughts, we might be able to start fleshing out a way forward. But we need to start talking about things instead of the constant “OMG 1000 cases, death will take us in 2 weeks… cases cases cases… we will all die when even 1 covid case is passed on”
We need to force ourselves to calm down in order to have real dialogue.
Just go get vaccinated. There is nothing to talk about. Most people can see from the numbers why people should be vaccinated.

He has a soothing voice but as the CMO he is in charge of this right now. Either he thinks what is being done is a good idea or the PACT are muzzling him.
Given that he is already leaving I can’t understand why he is acting this way.

Yes thats so true… I don’t know why they cannot give out the vaccines & boosters at the civic centers in each district, you can only get the vaccine/booster in the district you live in & on certain days, A-K Mon, Wed & Fri & L-Z Tues, Thurs & Sat, a bit like during lockdown with going out on the road/grocery shopping etc… it will minimize the queues & gatherings…
It’s a staffing issue. Now ask why private medical clinics can’t administer them.

Why can’t Caymanians be trained? Administer shots is not rocket science.
