16 travellers positive for COVID over weekend
(CNS): There were sixteen positive cases of COVID-19 among travellers over the weekend, five of whom were vaccinated, Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said in his latest report. Three people who tested positive were at the end of the five-day home quarantine period, while the rest were at the end of ten or fourteen days in quarantine. There are now more than 40 active cases of the virus among those in isolation and eleven of them are showing symptoms. The only patient in hospital is the woman in her 70s, whose case was reported last week as the first community transmission in Cayman for over a year.
Dr Lee said the news of community spread after fourteen months was very stressful and worrying for many people but keeping people safe and well informed remains the government’s top priority.
“I am very reassured that Public Health has been able to swiftly contact trace all those concerned, and I thank them for working through the night both on the ground and in the laboratories,” he said. “I am also grateful to all the public for their cooperation. Getting vaccinated is the best protection against COVID-19 disease.”
All vaccination clinics were closed Monday but more than 600 people have been vaccinated since the community transmission was report last Wednesday. 75% of the population now has had at least one shot and the national rate for the full course is 71%. The vaccination clinic resumes at Camana Bay on Tuesday.
Anyone experiencing any respiratory symptoms is asked to contact their general practitioner, usual health clinic or the Flu Hotline for advice. Public Health will advise if it is required to attend the flu clinic or other centres for testing or assessment.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness along with Public Health wish to remind the community of the importance of mental health and psychological support during the pandemic. Caring professionals can be accessed through the Mental Health Helpline at 1.800.534-6463 (MIND), Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Please keep a longer than 5 day quarantine in place.
Re: The domino effect has begun.
While Cayman is busy chasing positive cases..

Don’t tell you have not ben warned.
Nice double negative to go with your negative outlook on life. I suppose you have already started you panic shopping/hoarding to ensure you have plenty for Christmas.
I already bought my toilet paper for Xmas!
You wrapping presents with that?
That is his presents! Under normal circumstances, his wife would be unimpressed, but this year she will love him up for it!
If a quantity of negative PCR screened, fully vaccinated 5 day quarantine travelers are consistently retesting positive after the 5th day, then dropping the 5 day quarantine in a few weeks will inevitably reintroduce community transmission, illnesses, and a spiking death count (particularly among the stubborn misinformed). Using all the available empirical information and projection data, PACT needs to decide now how many deaths and lockdowns are we collectively going to be okay with. Then decide policy. Not the other way around.
It is entirely possible that we have a portion of the population that may want to get vaccinated, but do not want to help the government to reach their 80% threshold. Not necessarily because they are being selfish, but perhaps they feel it is still too early to get ride of quarantine requirements for incoming travelers.
Personally, I am vaccinated but i also hope the government puts the breaks on things for now, or re-examines the phases for safe reopening. Before dropping all quarantine for vaccinated people (who we known can transmit the virus) they should add more flights and allow kids under 12 to quarantine for 5 days if their parents are doubled jabbed. Maybe drop that to 4 days at some point.
I know people want tourism to come back, but if it is at the expense and detriment of us that live here perhaps we should wait a little longer.
*(Cue the ‘covid is never going away so just learn to live with it’ comments)
Wait a little longer till when? Using which metrics? This has been going on for a year and a half and it does not seem to be slowing as there continues to be concern of variant after variant. So yes, there will be some degree of living with it.
ALL arriving passengers should be quarantined for the 14 days. The positive tests among the VACCINATED are increasing as the ‘vaccine’ is a joke and FALSE HOPE. Positive tests in UK and Israel are now approaching evenly divided between the vaxed and unvaxed! Stop the nonsense and look at the hard evidence and data.
Vaccination clinics CLOSED on Monday????? Some explain that reasoning please
@6:33am for those who waited this long to get vaccinated, can wait another day and have no grounds for complaining that the clinic wasn’t open yesterday. How’s that?
Yup.
The clinics have been opened for months on end. Why you worried about it being closed on Monday now? All of you scattering around looking for vaccine should have done so months ago.
Stop with the negativity and go find one today and get your vaccine.
Yet in just a couple of weeks, vaccinated persons will be free to spread it in the community!
How many were children under 12?
Community spread is inevitable – get used to it
How many cases a week will be acceptable for the government before they start locking us down an closing schools again? 50? 100? 500? Don’t they expect it to get worse are we go into the winter months?
Unfortunately, I have a feeling that haven’t thought it all through yet and will end up winging it
40 cases, 1 in hospital
Ok
Get vaccinated. Wear a mask when you can’t social distance.
Don’t stress.
The one in hospital is not admitted as a result of COVID.
So, really no reason for panic
How many even had the slightest inclination that they had it?
