442 more people apply for tourism cash

(CNS) Following the reopening of the tourism stipend registration process, an additional 442 people have applied who had not previously received any government money since the borders closed in March 2020. The new applicants are currently being vetted as the cash is reserved for Caymanians, their spouses and permanent residents who were working in the tourism sector when the pandemic began. The payments to all newly approved applicants will be backdated to cover the three-month period from July to September 2021 and will continue on a monthly basis thereafter.

“The stipend is intended to provide relief to our displaced tourism workers and I want to ensure that all those who are in need of this support have the opportunity to receive it,” said Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan. “Before an application can be approved, the information provided has to be verified to ensure that the applicant meets the specified criteria. With 442 new applications, this process is taking a little longer than anticipated and is expected to be completed by mid-September.”

To help avoid delays in the verification process, applicants are asked to respond to missed calls, voicemails and emails from the Ministry or Department of Tourism. All displaced workers who have not already done so are also being encouraged to register with WORC, which is now a mandatory requirement to give displaced workers the best possible opportunity to secure future employment.

WORC can be contacted by calling 945 9672 or via their website.

    Large percentage of SCAMMERS!!

There is no way that list should be growing! It should be shrinking because surely some of these tourism workers can find other work IF they want it.

Facts? You mean real facts?………… or fake facts? Mercy me! I don’t know what to do! I have begun to suspect everything I hear about how things are going with getting covid under control. Does anyone know what the truth is?

You and me have to continue to study vetted medical reports, and arrive at our own conclusions. That’s what people do, or should do.

It’s a strange world. To some extent the virus seems to have been politicised. That doesn’t make me very happy, because it defers from the scientific method, and that method is something that should be closely embraced.

Four hundred and forth two more tourism workers added to the stippen I don’t believe for a minute that those people took nearly eighteen months to hear about the money, please stop put every thing on tourism workers and come up with some thing better

If they were capable tourism workers they would be able to get jobs at hotels like the ritz. Clearly not able or qualified so don’t give them benefits. Couldn’t these people be paid to clean up after storm grace?

      • Anonymous says:

Yes,good idea. They should be cleaning yo after Grace. Things are still a mess. If you don’t want to clean up…..no stipend. Simple as that.

      • Anonymous says:

Who tf wants to work for the Ritz? On island they are the most anti-caymanian hotel and everyone knows it.

It seems like your animosity towards people who applied is misplaced. Assuming these candidates are vetted properly, these individuals shouldn’t be vilified for applying under the same guidelines as others have been currently participating.

The frustration should be at the original effort of verifying eligible people so it wouldn’t have turned into the perceived boondoggle it is now.

Since there is no list of Caymanians, and being born here or having a Cayman Passport does not mean you are Caymanian, how are they determining applicant’s status? What are they doing when the process reveals that applicants may in fact be here unlawfully? Paying them anyway?

    • Anonymous says:

Given they are paying people who have found other work without even enquiring what the new job pays versus their old one, are you surprised? The important thing is to be able to claim they are helping Caymanians, not ensure that the money goes where it is needed.

      • Anonymous says:

Exactly. Our futures are being squandered. No objection to local people in need (and unable to help themselves) being provided with all they need, but millions is being spent on those that are simply unqualified to receive it, and of those, a significant number are “imports”.

CIG should be putting those who purport not to have employ into work teams to improve local infrastructure for when the border does reopen. Help them help themselves! Eg. There should be a sidewalk along east side of West Bay Road, esp along the heart of the Hotel Tourism Zone. Bike lanes should be painted in an enticing and attention-grabbing manner, with proper Integration into traffic circles, not dissolving into hardscape curbing. Put some planter boxes out. Lots that could be done and isn’t.

Ok 1500 a month, let’s pay rent, groceries, school fees, and bus fare for a month. Let’s hope that I don’t get sick or my child gets sick. I work just to be broke ? You ever hear the saying some ppl are too broke to work ? Yeh it’s true

      • Anonymous says:

Except this is money you don’t even have to work for. What’s your point – that the government should pay you more money not to work? Kell, Kenny sayu he will give you the money even if you now have another job. Entitled much?

This government seems determined to turn Cayman into a province of Venezuela. The ultra-wealthy, their civil service and the dependents of the state.
Not long to go now Kenneth. Carry on.

Port and import charges will have to be increased to pay for these pay raises, and for politicians to keep their jobs.
Our cost of living is going to go up because our ministers are engaged in popularity contests ready for the next elections.

Why are tourism companies not actively training, cross/retraining locals now??

    • Anonymous says:

Because leopards do not change their spots.

      • Anonymous says:

So you expect the tourism. Onlanies who have no business to train Caymanians to replace expats who they let go because they have no business, and Caymany to do jobs in other industries which the tourism companies don’t work in? Got it.

    • Anonymous says:

Because they like riding jet skis too fast close to the shore after taking tourists money.

    • D. Truth says:

From what I hear and see, they don’t want those jobs. They must be waiting on government jobs! (More pay, less work!)

  12. Anonymous says:

Why do recipients behave to register with WORC when they will pay it to people who have found other jobs anyway?

442 newly unemployed tourist sector applicants 18 months after closure? This just shows how off message the entire closure policy has gone. Open up now without the meaningless stages and stipends and all these problems will go away. The unvaccinated can own their choices and the vaccinated can finally start living again.

  14. Anonymous says:

Please please do not give any government money to the unvaccinated. Uk statistics (up to date as of today august 20) show over two thirds of hospital admissions and deaths with delta are unvaccinated. No jab, no support. Let’s do the right thing here.

    • Anonymous says:

What you fail to write is that the VACCINATED are the Super- Spreaders and not the UNVACCINATED. Please do your research and do educate the public on the right facts

      • Anonymous says:

This is complete rubbish. What proof do you have of this?

      • Anonymous says:

Vaccinated people are less likely to contract covid in the first place. They are not the super spreaders. Also less likely to be a burden on the health care system. The unvaccinated are the problem.

      • Anonymous says:

Whenever anti-vaxxers come up with some bizarre notion and then tell people “to do your research,” it seems that what they really mean is find some obscure and non-credible source that supports my ridiculous opinion.

      • Anon says:

More fake news and lies from an anti vaxer. Please give it up.., no one believes these lies – the unvaccinated increase the death toll and prolong the pandemic – just look at the uk, Israel and the USA.

      • Anonymous says:

I’m sorry but did you get dropped on your head a few too many times?

      • Anonymous says:

The right facts, eh? Not those unfactual facts, or the ones that are contrary to what you want to believe. Got it.
