COVID cases increase to 22 with positive travellers

(CNS): While the Cayman Islands still seems free of COVID-19 in the community, the number of people in quarantine or isolation testing positive at the beginning or end of their 14 days has pushed the current active case level to 22. Over the weekend officials carried out almost 1,000 tests, two of which were positive. Those samples came from people who were at the end of their quarantine but they will now remain in isolation.

A significant number of these tests related to the final screen tests for the suspected case of the virus in a student at Red Bay Primary, as families, staff and the child’s school year peers came to the end of their two weeks in isolation. No one was positive but officials said they were not able to get the good news to everyone immediately as contact details were incorrect.

“All of the primary contacts involved in the Red Bay Primary School incident were called and advised by the Health Services Authority how to manage their sampling on Saturday; and that they needed to return home until they received their results, which is an automatic process,” officials explained. “Unfortunately, some of the email addresses provided to return the results were incorrect and this caused a delay in the reports being delivered as planned. All people who were affected have now been called.   The HSA wishes to apologise for the worry and inconvenience this may have caused.”

Government has still not supplied the full details of the number of people currently isolating at home with wristbands or those in government quarantine, despite requests by CNS for that information. Also, it is not clear exactly how many of the individuals currently infected with the coronavirus are suffering symptoms, but at least one person remains in ICU and CNS has also requested up to date information on this as well.

Cayman’s current tally of positive cases since testing began is now 235, just one fatality and 212 people have recovered. Officials have now carried out 44,486 tests.

Testing remains free and accessible to all members of the public on request and can be booked online here.

For those folks inclined to be afraid here are some stats about real things to be afraid of: https://injuryfacts.nsc.org/all-injuries/preventable-death-overview/odds-of-dying/

How many of them rank way above COVID-19 that you spend little to no time thinking about?

  2. J.A..Roy Bodden says:

With the exponential increases in Covid-19 cases in the United States and Europe and with our close neighbour Jamaica chafing under the strain , What does that mean for us in these islands?

Many years ago , Marshal McLuhan , the Canadian media expert proclaimed that “The world was a global village “. This indeed has been proven to the case .

Perhaps we should at this time begin reviewing our strategy for a resurgence of Covid -19 in these islands over the next few months.

Exponential? Please look up the word before you use it to frighten people. Increase, yes. Exponential, No.

      • anon says:

7.51am I’m not exactly a supporter of Roy Bodden, but in this case I have to say his use of exponential was right on the button.

I do believe that Running a University for years , and graduating from a university in Canada With Honours , Not to mention writing books , Roy Bodden kind of knows What the word means . Do You Genius ?

All very quite over the two locals who broke the home quarantine.
    Hmmm I wonder why.

    I just love it

Why don’t gov’t require a negative test result within 24 hours of flying? If you are positive you don’t get on the plane and lose your ticket. This way people take care before they fly. Currently they might as well catch it because they have to isolate anyway and better to do that for a reason.

    • Anonymous says:

You lost me on the “they might as well catch it”

    • Anonymous says:

Because the reality of obtaining a COVID test and getting results within 24 hours are slim to none. Most places it is several days and the rapid tests are not widely available.

      • Anonymous says:

Not true anymore! Many many places offer same-day results. I know persons that have gotten results in less than an hour.

I love how they are brainwashing the community by saying they are just “travellers”. They still have to come in contact with people and accomodate in numerous places throughout the island.

    • Anonymous says:

I love how your so ignorant to have just figured that out for yourself. We call it education. It’s what you get in a non government school.

This system is barely working. 22 positive travelers, the majority of whom tested positive as they were about to leave quarantine. Just a matter of time before someone slips through the cracks.

To hell with WHO recommendations make quarantine/isolation 21 days minimum!!!

    • Anonymous says:

Seriously you need to take precautions for YOURSELF as this isn’t going anywhere.

    • Anonymous says:

It’s working perfectly fine and I have been through it to verify it.

    • anon says:

10.15am The system is working they are not going to release anyone until they are certain they have a negative test.
Might I suggest you lock yourself in your ensuite bedroom for 3 weeks with no exercise and food delivered to your door but no physical contact with anyone. Just see how you feel after just 5 days of this.

      • Mimi says:

We all did just that, for 4-5 MONTHS beginning in March, we were under threat of arrest if we went out of our homes. Do you not remember that??

        • Merryman says:

4.27pm I remember you could always go out to buy liquor.

          • Anonymous says:

Being in lock down when you can go to a grocery store on your “designated” days or do an hour of exercise outside, pick up liquor or food, is a lot different then being locked in an apartment with a gps tracker attached to your wrist.

  8. Anonymous says:

CNS – please clarify in your second paragraph “no one was negative….” ??

CNS: Yes, sorry, an error. Corrected now.

  9. Anonymous says:

Our sytem is working. As long as those coming in and testing positive are in quarantine and not being released until they test negative we are containing the spread.

  10. Anonymous says:

The 44k test do not make people immune. It is useless data.

  11. anon says:

It would have been helpful to know if the two positives tested negative on arrival. If as it seems they are in hotel accomodation rather than self isolation, it is going to put enormous mental stess on these persons if they have to continue remaining locked up in a hotel room with no idea when they will be released. I have been accomodated in a hotel for 4 days so far since arrival and already I am finding it very hard to cope with no physical human contact and no opportunity to exercise.
Of course I knew this was coming and accepted it, but I do wonder if Govt have any idea how claustrophobic this process is.A Welcome Home information sheet in my room stipulates a “minimum” stay of 16 days which was not what we were led to believe.
Hopefully a safe way will be found to reduce the isolation period to a more humane 7 days without risk of infection, which will encourage more visitors to our shores.

    • Anonymous says:

Keep strong. The process is not at attract visitors but to allow residents and home owners to return.

  12. Anonymous says:

No one was negative but officials said they were not able to get the good news to everyone immediately as contact details were incorrect.

This one sentence sums up the competence of Cayman’s Covid response.

    • Anonymous says:

7:28 – “No one was negative” is very clearly a typo. Think about it, if everyone tested at the school was positive the cases would have skyrocketed. Maybe CNS needs to make that correction?

CNS: Yes, you are right. Correction made.

  13. Vinnie says:

Why on earth dont the leaders stop this madness before it gets totally out of hand and into our community?

Flying covid 19 into Cayman? Wth?

All for what? A few hundred bucks?…..

  14. Anonymous says:

I know why don’t we continue to allow people from UK and US to visit while the pandemic is at extremely high levels in both countries.
All visitors should be mandated to be in government quarantine for 2 weeks period – no exceptions.
If you are an expat who has a house here, then you certainly can afford a few thousand dollars if you truly want to be here. Think about that.
Okay bloggers bring on the comments. You know what I say is true.

That’s how it is now, isn’t it?

    • Anonymous says:

OK mister doom and gloom, how many people who are/have quarantined have passed this on to anyone? Quarantine is quarantine, whether it’s at home or a hotel. Being at home is actually safer as you don’t share an A/C system, you don’t have your meals delivered, laundry is done by yourself, you have less contact with the outside world…you know what I say is true! Peace.

  15. Elvis says:

They will all remain in quarantine u till an idiot decides not to then we all get sick and our grandparents and old folks die.
All for a dollar .. oh boy

    • Anonymous says:

Why will our grandparents and old folks die? The vast majority of elderly defeat the virus. Age isn’t our greatest risk, it’s obesity and there’s talk the vaccine won’t help such persons.

  16. Jaz says:

Should state the countries the persons are traveling from.

  17. Anonymous says:

Require a negative PCR 72hrs prior to travel. That will knock our actives down and remind traveling residents to be extremely vigilant if they intend to come back during their flight window.

    • Anonymous says:

72 hrs lol that is so long you might as well not even test people. They need to be tested before they step on the plane – AIr Canada just announced they will have a 5 minute PCR test.

  18. Anonymous says:

    The sky is falling!

Government won’t stop people from coming in, so it will be another lock down by Christmas . People going to shoot this down, but when the lock down come they will be singing another story

    • Anonymous says:

How? And these ‘people’ are your neighbours, friends and family, everyone has to get through the final PCR test before being allowed out, and everyone has to quarantine, except maybe those on the drug boats…
