(CNS): Daniel Meeks (34), a former police officer with the RCIPS for six years and the Jamaican police before that, has been jailed for three years. While the court dockets have been drastically reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, cases are still being heard over Zoom. Meeks, who had been remanded in custody since he was convicted in February of misconduct in public office, appeared via video link for sentencing last week.

The former cop was found guilty of conning an elderly woman into putting his name on her home ownership papers. While Meeks’ name was removed from the deeds before he was able to take anything from his victim, Justice Linda Dobbs found that he had used his position as a police officer to take advantage of the vulnerable woman.

During the trial, which Justice Dobbs presided over without a jury, the court heard how Meeks had responded to a domestic incident at the victim’s home in Palm Dale, George Town, in November 2017.

Vernice Johnson, who was 71 years old at the time, was having challenges with her daughter, who had mental health issues, which led her to call 911. After her daughter was arrested, Meeks began going back to the woman’s home while off duty, taking gifts. Within the space of a week he had manipulated Johnson, who could not read very well, into signing papers that added him to the deeds of her house and land worth more than $270,000.

I grew up with Daniel here in Jamaica. He was always well dressed polite and a lady’s man. He is someone I would consider honest with good church upbringing. He served the JCF for years without complaint to the best of my knowledge. He argued that his intent was to assist the lady, but his story seems shady, now he is convicted of misuse of his office and I accept that. I am concerned as to what has brought him to attempt something like this, was it societal circumstances? I will continue to pray him up so that he can realign and be a good role model for his family. Race, culture, gender is not important, “a man is just a man…” one love!

If he has Caymanian status hope he is stripped of it and deported back to Jamaica after he serves the FULL sentence. Scum!

Happy to see the continued focus on accountability in our civil service. I think we now drop this criticism.

So because we need more diverse cops I’m putting all Jamaicans into the same bucket? Not what I said. But if you get too many from an already corrupt country guess what follows? I’m not going to answer that rhetorical question because I think you may be smarter then your comment let on.

Go make your complaint to the relevant person in charge. It does not matter what nationality the officer was, you are free to complain about the treatment you received.

Wow! He should’ve gotten more, considering his position, the lady’s age, domestic life and how much he was looking to gain from all this!!!! He didnt mean “well” or was it that he was “caring about her”! He’s a downright disgrace, I hope he’s deported as he exits the prison.

He’s probably been given Status as usual. The section of the law which rescinds such seems to never be used. Revoke & Deport.

He’s a disgrace to his uniform, country and to the people of the Cayman Islands who he swore to protect. There is no defence whatsoever for what he’s done and you need your head testing to even try and make excuses for him.

        Qualified????

You do know that graduates of Truman Bodden Law School are not qualified to work in any jurisdiction other than Cayman .. so how does that really qualify them to work even here??

I am currently overseeing an articled clerk and the clerk’s writing level after 5 years at TBLS is barely above that of a fairly well performing JGHS/CHHS year 11/12 student… so I am speaking form a point of knowledge.

So if there are UK/Caribbean trained Caymanian attorneys who are willing to work for the salary which is less than that of a paralegal or legal secretary in the private sector, … then tell them to leave the private sector and go work at ODPP

Yes Jamaican….on that note have the police located that Caymanian man who’s hiding out in west bay? Or the caymanians who control the coke ring here? Or the Caymanian business owners who are not paying pensions/health insurance.
The point I’m trying to make is every country has its good and bad and it’s unfair to lump everyone together. I went to a restaurant and told the waitress I wanted a separate bill from my friends and she did not understand what the word separate means. It took a lot of repetition and break down…and she was CAYMANIAN!!! On another occasion I went to a laundromat and requested $5 in coins and I stood there and watched as the young CAYMANIAN male counted out 60 quaters to hand me. Now if I go around and proclaim that ALL caymanians are unintelligent based on my interaction with a few, would that be fair? No. When dealing with ppl you do so case by case and avoid passing judgement on a group. I’ve deal with a lot of ignorant, shortsighted ppl from multiple countries and some extremely talented intellectuals from multiple countries. The more exposed you are you more experiences you’ll gather in that regard. I’ll end on the assumption that you aren’t very experienced yourself…..see what I did there, I judged you as if I knew your past, present and future.

What is your point! If you live here you must realize that this nationality caused a lot of headlines.

What I’ve realised is that that nationality is always highlighted, and if a caymanian person has jamaican heritage the hightlight will be jamaican caymanian. What I’ve realised is that WE CAYMANIANS have an immense amount of misplaced hate towards Jamaicans for things that happened dinosaur years ago. When we keep focusing on the negatives we will fail to see the great proportion of positives around us. Maybe you can name 100 Jamaicans who are worth the scum label you place on them but I can name the same amount who have proven to be law abiding citizens of Cayman Islands who come here with a genuine purpose of existing and not infringing upon WE THE CAYMANIANS. The blanket hate we spew towards a nationality has to stop if we are to move forward. That’s the point I’m getting at.
A jamaican man was stabbed to death by a woman of Spanish origin and the manner in which the news was reported I swore the man was in a fight with himself and killed himself. A jamaica man was shot in his head several times and again I swore he killed himself when I read the article. The negative light that is constantly shone on that nationality is what is feeding the hate. Wake up, be a goat and not a sheep. Learn ppl for yourself, have some morals and apply that the unjust discrimination you place on a group of people (who are unfortunately being misrepresented by the few bad apples that spoil the bunch)

As a honest and proud Jamaican and former police officer now living in the USA, and living by the same upright principles as when i was back home, i immediately took offense to that post having read it and was about to make my own comment but now i dont need to. Your response will suffice. Well said, I need not add.

8.21 most “Caymanian ” businessmen are from Jzmaica

        • Anonymous says:

Based on what you’ve said I’m going to assume that of all the businessmen you know, most of them are Jamaican. Most meaning majority. Or are you saying that most of the businessmen on island are jamaicans? Which is it. If it’s one thing I hate, it’s words like most/majority being thrown out without any numbers to quantify and validate its meaning. When you can provide statistic with the breakdown of the nationality of the business owners here on island please share it, until then please refrain from responding. Stop making statements with no information to back it.
