Victims fight back as robbers strike in GT
(CNS): Two armed men dressed as construction workers made off with almost $3,000 after robbing a courier yesterday in George Town, even though he put up a fight. And the day before that a would-be robber armed with a toy gun fled from Reflections empty-handed when the cashier turned on him. As the crime on the streets of the capital continued this week, it seems some victims are fighting back. However, the police are warning people not to risk their safety by confronting armed assailants
The robbery of the courier happened in broad daylight at around 12:30pm on Friday, when a driver near BritCay on Eastern Avenue was held up at gunpoint and his bag containing the cash taken. The courier initially struggled with the armed man but gave up the fight when a second robber approached. Police said the robbers were dressed in construction gear, wearing hard hats and reflective vests, and made off with the bag across Eastern Avenue and down Bodden Road.
At around 6:30am on Thursday an armed masked man burst into Reflections Food-4-Less on MacLendon Drive in George Town. He demanded cash from the store clerk but a struggle ensued, during which the cashier was able to grab the gun and it became clear that the firearm was plastic. The suspect, who was about 5’5” and wearing a navy blue hoodie and mask, fled the scene.
Officers conducted searches of the areas but no one matching the descriptions has been located.
While no shots were fired and no one was injured in either incident, the RCIPS is urging people to exercise extreme caution in situations like these and prioritise their personal safety. All possible steps should be taken to avoid confrontations with anyone who appears to be armed.
Both matters are currently under investigation and the police urge anyone with information to contact 949-4222 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.

CNS: Because in this case no one has been arrested. Once a suspect has been arrested and until charges are dropped, the suspect has pleaded guilty or the case has ended in a verdict, the comments fall under the sub judice rule, which may influence the court.

That is rubbish! Messengers are picking up packages, sometimes three times a day from the same client, and they don’t know what is in those packages. MOSTLY, and I emphasise MOSTLY, it is documents. How did the robbers know what the contents were?? Buildings employ security guards and there was one on this occasion. He was in the nice air-conditioning with an earphone in his ear, presumably not being very watchful – hardly what I would call “doing his job”! More to the point, which security company has the guards at BritCay and what are THEY doing about this? Also, there was a police car near by which the robbers strolled by AFTER they robbed the messenger!!

What we def. agree on is that something MORE needs to be done here. The ball was dropped initially on the part of the yapping (very much distracted) security guard. Obviously the person he was talking to was meant to distract him. I too am looking into this and having a word with his employer. He certainly does not need his job. I don’t have a degree in Criminology, but every one directly and remotely related to this incident would be classed as a suspect. Phone records looked at. Calls triangulated. This was a set up. Sprint should also be doing their own internal investigations. Those men were there waiting. Someone gave them orders and told them when to be there. and we NEED to find out WHO. If the RCIPS can’t sit down and figure this out, they are worthless.

We keep bringing in expats to lead the police force. The fact is, they have no stake in resolving the crime issue. They didn’t grow up here, they don’t have extended family here, they don’t plan to raise kids here. They come here, earn a fat salary, spend weekends on the beach and then pack up and go home after a few years. Why would they rock the boat by confronting the criminal element head on?
Agreed, you could probably offer twice the pay and cut the force in half and have a more qualified and engaged local, home grown force. Not enough Caymanians find the job rewarding enough to take it as is.

If you pummel someone beyond what a court would consider necessary force, you might quickly find yourself in the back of the same police car even if it was technically self defence
Carrying one around on purpose at all times could make it premeditated in a court, if you randomly grab one to defend yourself that would be different, but even then, you would have to stop as soon as you were out of immediate danger or risk breaking the law yourself.

This is 100% true. Chicago faces the same issues (kinda) the central business district and affluent neighborhoods are doing better than ever. The impoverished are moving from their neighborhoods more than ever to commit crimes in the more affluent neighborhoods. The criminals are being treated as victims and given soft sentences or no sentences. It’s just an opportunity for criminals and they’re taking an advantage of it like never before. It’s an unfortunate reflection of our world as a society.
