Victims fight back as robbers strike in GT

| 10/03/2018 | 45 Comments

(CNS): Two armed men dressed as construction workers made off with almost $3,000 after robbing a courier yesterday in George Town, even though he put up a fight. And the day before that a would-be robber armed with a toy gun fled from Reflections empty-handed when the cashier turned on him. As the crime on the streets of the capital continued this week, it seems some victims are fighting back. However, the police are warning people not to risk their safety by confronting armed assailants

The robbery of the courier happened in broad daylight at around 12:30pm on Friday, when a driver near BritCay on Eastern Avenue was held up at gunpoint and his bag containing the cash taken. The courier initially struggled with the armed man but gave up the fight when a second robber approached. Police said the robbers were dressed in construction gear, wearing hard hats and reflective vests, and made off with the bag across Eastern Avenue and down Bodden Road.

At around 6:30am on Thursday an armed masked man burst into Reflections Food-4-Less on MacLendon Drive in George Town. He demanded cash from the store clerk but a struggle ensued, during which the cashier was able to grab the gun and it became clear that the firearm was plastic. The suspect, who was about 5’5” and wearing a navy blue hoodie and mask, fled the scene.

Officers conducted searches of the areas but no one matching the descriptions has been located.

While no shots were fired and no one was injured in either incident, the RCIPS is urging people to exercise extreme caution in situations like these and prioritise their personal safety. All possible steps should be taken to avoid confrontations with anyone who appears to be armed.

Both matters are currently under investigation and the police urge anyone with information to contact 949-4222 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.

Can CNS explain why we can comment on this, but not on XXXXXX?

CNS: Because in this case no one has been arrested. Once a suspect has been arrested and until charges are dropped, the suspect has pleaded guilty or the case has ended in a verdict, the comments fall under the sub judice rule, which may influence the court.

What happened to my reply stating that the Compass allowed comments on XXXXXX on the exact same report?

CNS: If you want to know why the Compass does something, ask the Compass. You asked why CNS closed the comment box on open cases and I told you. End of discussion.

    Shucks man.
This employee almost got the award to shoot the first criminal with there own gun.
    Nice try though.
Someday soon, we gonna here that the little sucker wanna be criminal was somebody’s baby and the imported labor did not have to shoot them.

Wait for it. Just a matter of time before a criminal gets shot, dead if possible..

It’s not a matter of fighting for an employer business. Criminals make it personal sometimes. So for all of you that never faced the situation before, Shut up and realize the mind does different for each of us and we do not know until the moment of truth of what we would do or how we would react especially when the criminal looks familiar.

And for goodness sake. Stop blaming Alden or the Community Police. You confuse the situation with a Dictator and a Personal Business Security Guard.

Now let’s hear how the little wanna be criminals are doing all of this because they cannot get employment. Could that be the reason for a drive by shooting? No excuse whatsoever.
If they all turn to criminal activities when they get the first job refusal. We might as well pack it up and just leave everything open for them.

To the courier company involved: Cease making your staff drop & pick up large amounts of Ca$H. Cayman is no longer the islands that time forgot. Are you living under a rock?

To the as$%holes who keep warning us of how Cayman has changed: Yes, it has changed, but cowering to crime so you have to change your lifestyle is pathetic. I look forward to meeting a robber/rapist and have a big surpise that might make some of the sh*(t families angry for all the funeral fees they will have to pay for their little angels. If we all took that attitude instead of warning each other, then the criminal would realize any attempt is suicide on their part, and I for one am all too happy in helping them make that realization.

That is rubbish! Messengers are picking up packages, sometimes three times a day from the same client, and they don’t know what is in those packages. MOSTLY, and I emphasise MOSTLY, it is documents. How did the robbers know what the contents were?? Buildings employ security guards and there was one on this occasion. He was in the nice air-conditioning with an earphone in his ear, presumably not being very watchful – hardly what I would call “doing his job”! More to the point, which security company has the guards at BritCay and what are THEY doing about this? Also, there was a police car near by which the robbers strolled by AFTER they robbed the messenger!!

Concerned long-time citizen, who are YOU?
You’re voicing all the same things I did and I’m related to the victim…
What we def. agree on is that something MORE needs to be done here. The ball was dropped initially on the part of the yapping (very much distracted) security guard. Obviously the person he was talking to was meant to distract him. I too am looking into this and having a word with his employer. He certainly does not need his job. I don’t have a degree in Criminology, but every one directly and remotely related to this incident would be classed as a suspect. Phone records looked at. Calls triangulated. This was a set up. Sprint should also be doing their own internal investigations. Those men were there waiting. Someone gave them orders and told them when to be there. and we NEED to find out WHO. If the RCIPS can’t sit down and figure this out, they are worthless.

BUT NO, now we are becoming wall street. SO AS long as Cayman continues in this direction, CRIME WILL NOT END! … and Aldens 60% drop in gun crime is bull ….

Translation: “Caymanians are all lazy because of our culture and as long as Cayman moves forward and keeps up with the times by joining forces with like-minded, future oriented people and hires people (never Caymanian) who will actually work toward that future we will always have a crime problem”

As a born Caymanian, I get you, and I’m not offended at all.

We keep bringing in expats to lead the police force. The fact is, they have no stake in resolving the crime issue. They didn’t grow up here, they don’t have extended family here, they don’t plan to raise kids here. They come here, earn a fat salary, spend weekends on the beach and then pack up and go home after a few years. Why would they rock the boat by confronting the criminal element head on?

Agreed, you could probably offer twice the pay and cut the force in half and have a more qualified and engaged local, home grown force. Not enough Caymanians find the job rewarding enough to take it as is.

Only if you want to go to jail too, our self defence laws mirror Britain’s, only necessary force to defend your things or lives
If you pummel someone beyond what a court would consider necessary force, you might quickly find yourself in the back of the same police car even if it was technically self defence

Carrying one around on purpose at all times could make it premeditated in a court, if you randomly grab one to defend yourself that would be different, but even then, you would have to stop as soon as you were out of immediate danger or risk breaking the law yourself.

      This ain’t the US… thankfully

Don’t be so naive and narrow minded to think all this is a result of one administration. This is a result of refusing to see the decay of the family structure for decades. When kids grow up in a dysfunctional family structure and taught the value of education and proper social skills, then a life of criminality is almost certain.

    Dear Cayman,

Your elected majority government aka PPM aka Alden has FAILED you.

Yes, there has been an acute succession of failures for the last 13 years, but this current deteriorating situation is squarely at the feet of those who have been in control as of late.

A failure to plan is a plan to fail.

*Note: The REAL reason for our absence of a national development plan is because it is “bad for business”.
In other words, “foreign investors” and the “business community” prefer a blank canvas wherewith they can do as they feel.

(E.g. Import cheap labour. No incentive to train, hire, or develop locals. Exploitable workforce. Constructive disenfranchisement of young Caymanians – and the inevitable fallout thereof.)

Our government does not consider the collective welfare and national security of Caymanians to be a priority.

Our children deserve to be governed by a mindset that actually gives a damn about their future.

    – Whodatis

(Not a party-person, but right now, it is what it is.)

    * If this is “growth, progress, and development” – then you can keep it. Seriously.

Nah, the government never spent more on education for past generations. There is as much opportunity now as there has ever been probably more.

The same thing is happening in the U.S. the state has taken over much of the responsibility of the father/nuclear family and the youth are told they bear little personal responsibility.
The social values have changed for the worse.

The chickens are simply coming home to roost.

Not sure if your opening sentence was sarcasm or not, but it must be noted that $100,000,000.00 on infrastructure does not necessarily effective spending on education make.

As for the rest of your post, we are pretty much in full agreement.

However, as you are aware, the progressive western world frown upon any and all references to “father / nuclear family” concerns.
To do is to be homophobic, old-fashioned and a dinosaur.

Just check the CNS archives for evidence.

This is 100% true. Chicago faces the same issues (kinda) the central business district and affluent neighborhoods are doing better than ever. The impoverished are moving from their neighborhoods more than ever to commit crimes in the more affluent neighborhoods. The criminals are being treated as victims and given soft sentences or no sentences. It’s just an opportunity for criminals and they’re taking an advantage of it like never before. It’s an unfortunate reflection of our world as a society.
