Suspect smugglers had drugs and chickens

(CNS): Marine police chased and intercepted a Jamaican canoe Thursday night and recovered a large quantity of drugs as well as a number of caged roosters that were on board the vessel. According to the RCIPS, just before 11:00pm on 14 September, officers from the Joint Marine Unit who were on patrol off the eastern side of the Grand Cayman came upon a canoe from Jamaica. Following a brief pursuit, during which packages were thrown overboard, the canoe was intercepted.

Three men were taken into custody on suspicion of importation, and a large quantity of packages was recovered. Caged roosters that were on the canoe were confiscated, police said, but did not say how many.

The three men, all from Jamaica, are currently in police custody.

XXXXX, but I wonder whether our immigration department actually has a system that alerts them when someone is overstaying based on not having a leaving date on record?

Legalize local production for medial and recreational use. Cut the demand for these Jamaicans to come and supply. The boats will stop coming as the higher quality, locally produced goods will be in demand. The few boats that still come over can be intercepted with ease and the impact would be huge. No more illegal guns, no more illegal Jamaicans in our land and no more chickens lol and a big injection into our local economy. At the moment all of the proceeds from the black market ganja go right back to Jamaica and doesnt benefit the Country at all, lets make jobs, open businesses and keep our CI dollars in cayman! We had a Jamaican wanted for murder on our island, who knows what all the others that come back and fourth are capable of or have done. Food for thoughts, LEGALIZE IT!!!

Legalize human trafficking, cocaine, and automatic weapon ownership?!? More than just pot and roosters on these boats. The need for border enforcement does not diminish by ignoring the problem.

Don’t quite know how someone can be so ignorant. The whole concept of the comment is to legalize the LOCAL PRODUCTION of marijuana to stop the human trafficking, cocaine and illicit weapons coming into the land. Read it again idiot

Before you call someone else an idiot, try reading carefully and thinking. The posters point was that the canoes don’t just come because of the ganga – they come because there is money in the weapons trade, the cocaine and the human smuggling. Even if marijuana were legalised, they would still smuggle as long as there was something valuable to smuggle.

Thank you. The nimble professional smuggler with the opportunity of an open border, and complacent local law enforcement, can’t help but diversify the cargo to sustain their criminal vocation. This week’s example: fighting cocks. Big (illegal) business in St Mary’s and Portland with individual wagers ranging from $100 to $10,000 per bout. Some venue, in one of our Cayman Islands districts, was planning to (or is already) hosting illegal cock fighting.

What is the common factor in every canoe bust? Hundreds of pounds of ganja. Jamaica does not produce cocaine at all. There has never been a canoe busted full to the beams with cocaine and weapons. The cocaine and weapons come ALONG with ganja shipments and are never the lone purpose of these shipments. Ganja is the only drug that is produced in jamaica on a large scale. If Ganja stops coming from Jamaica, all the evils that come along with it will stop aswell(or slow down sognificantly). Stop being naive and pay attention to the news historically. Ganja IS the reason these canoes go back and fourth to and from our island. The hard drugs, weapons and illegal immigrants come along with it. Legalize the local production of marijuana, take care of our own local demand, keep up our border control and continue to make busts for those who do continue come over on boats and watch the island become a better place.

Jamaican ganja is low quality in every way. Low potency, grown prone to pests and more than likely full of pesticides due to the pests. In states that Marijuana is sold legally, vendors have to have their product tested for signs of pests and pesticides. If any are found the product cant be sold to the public because of health concerns.

Legalize what? Jamaicans crossing our borders without permission, chickens crossing without permission or drugs?

  9. BELONGER says:

Despite the best efforts of various Governments around the world in their fight against illegal Drugs & Firearms – for every 100 incidents that are carried out by smugglers, only 30 – 35 are actually intercepted.

This means that about 75% still gets through even when billions of dollars are spent to eradicate this menace. Not very good stats but it’s the reality.

Education is the key to cut the next generation of becoming slaves to drugs and criminality.

PPL crying everyday they have no money but will sit around a tree to watch roosters fight and give up their money for such foolishness. Thats why i dont listen to their pity stories anymore.

Seems like Rooster fighting is where police should focus their attention when looking for those Jamaican and other criminals that are illegally on our shores.

Yup – it would seem obvious that the gang placing the order for fighting cocks, was also responsible for the other items on the “cargo manifest”. Which of our local gangs is in this business line?
