Police begin using Fairbanks cellblock

(CNS): The new police custody suite is finally being used and is currently holding a number of prisoners, RCIPS management has confirmed. The groundbreaking for the new modern unit, which is a prefabricated building, was celebrated two and a half years ago in September 2013. It was scheduled to open in February last year and it is not clear why the project took so long to complete. The custody facility includes rooms for breathalyzer tests, interviews and visitors, as well as modern communication equipment.
The block of cells is designed to replace what have been described as the “cages” at the George Town and West Bay police stations, which were condemned by UK prison inspectors.
The new cell suite, which can hold 24 remand prisoners in 12 double cells, complete with toilets and bunk beds, is located on the Fairbanks site by the women’s prison and the Immigration Detention Centre and is understood to comply with human rights requirements. The holding units are both safer for inmates and more secure and the new facility will also allow the police to separate male, female and juvenile prisoners.
