(CNS): The government has waived the import duty on all approved COVID-19 home testing kits. According to the notes released from the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, 12 October, this applies to the brands of lateral flow tests that have been approved by the Health Service Authority or the chief medical officer. This means that once government rolls out its policy in relation to rapid antigen detecting testing and the public gets access to the home kits, they will be duty free and affordable enough for people to manage the need for isolation after coming into contact with those who are infected.

During the meeting government shuffled money around to cover the expanded scholarships programme, named some new notaries public and approved a coastal works permit for the construction of a private 100ft dock at the end of Blossom Village Drive on Little Cayman, subject to conditions outlined by the Department of Environment’s Technical Committee.

They should not be just “duty free” but given “free” to every household if they want people to do these tests. How many people can afford KYD10 per kit to be done, say may be twice a week, on a regular basis and daily if in isolation? Just hand it out free. Think of domestic helpers, gardeners, construction workers, just to name a few categories – you think they would be able to afford $10 kits to be used even twice a week?

Ain’t nobody buying their own test kits when HSA dishing them out for free. All this does is save government paying themselves duty.

So, first they decide to impose lateral flow testing on a daily basis, and then they make you pay for the testing that’s at their direction and not optional. And we are meant to be grateful that we don’t have to pay them duty as well? Every time a kid at my child’s school is positive I have to pay fr another two weeks worth of lateral flow kits for the family? I guess the good merchants of Cayman wi be happy to sell them to me – duty free of course – and with only a modest mark up 😉

Why are only the gov’t approved brands duty free? What is wrong with private citizens bringing other brands that are approved in the US duty free?

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.

The CMO has approved brands approved by WHO, EU, FDA and Public Health England. That’s a pretty big selection- dozens of tests to be honest.

What other brands do you wish to bring in mate?

Sounds like you want the ebay quick sale brands.

      Now that’s Dumb, dumb, dumb.
