3,207 petition signatures verified
(CNS): The Elections Office verified more than 60% of the names on the Cruise Port Referendum petition by Monday evening. Elections staff now need to confirm another 2,085 names from the 2,430 remaining signatures on the petition to reach the target of 5,292 to trigger the national vote on the government’s proposed cruise port facility.
Less than a month after the Elections Office began the process to confirm the referendum petition, which is provided for under section 70 of the Constitution, staff have managed to confirm that 3,207 people who signed the petition are qualified voters who have confirmed their support of the petition’s request for a national poll.
Elections staff are now going door-to-door in all districts, having started in George Town this week. The office is also setting up signing booths at local supermarkets at weekends and on selected afternoons. The Elections Office has extended its hours until 6:30pm on weekdays and is open on Saturdays.
For full details on where and how to verify your signature, visit the Elections Office website here.
If you have signed the petition and are heading off island, you can verify your signature before you leave at the Elections Office at the Smith Road Centre, George Town, or with Ellen Lazzari in Cayman Brac.
Anyone who has signed the petition but is currently off island, is asked to contact the Elections Office at office@elections.ky for details on how to verify or to call 949-8047. Those who are planning to leave who have not yet verified are also asked to visit or call the office to arrange for verification before they leave.

Looks like the process is moving along smoothly just as most of us expected, and contrary to dire warnings from CPR leader Johann Moxam who predicted intimidation and all sorts of stumbling blocks.
Without reason though? Plenty of reasonable people doubted the sincerity of this verification effort, not least because the Supervisor of Elections (a usually do-nothing job probably paying out handsomely) is also Chief Officer of Alden’s Ministry…come on…
Johann leader 😂😂😂😂
A lot of people believe that Mario Rankin, one of the main organizers of the Port Referendum Petition, is very much opposed to the Piers. These two Viewpoints on CNS tend to support that view:
https://caymannewsservice.com/2019/07/cost-cruise-port/
https://caymannewsservice.com/2019/07/cruise-lines-spassenger-spend/
These are two of the main reasons some people are of the opinion that the call for a referendum is really an attempt to stop the Port Redevelopment.
It’s really quite simple: When the PIR is initiated, EVERYONE who can vote has an opportunity to decide whether the project goes through or not. What is important is that the vote outcome is legally binding.
None of us know the outcome of the vote; all we know is that it will reflect the will of the registered voters of The Cayman Islands.
Of course the organisers of the referendum HOPE it will lead to an end to the cruise pier project. What else could they do? But they will accept the result of the referendum IF it is staged fairly.
We have recently been informed that 5438 signatures were submitted on 12th June and 199 more on 11th July. My question is”When is the cutoff date for signatures to be submitted? Certainly it can be open ended or is the latest date now the official date of submission of the petition. Will this late submission not delay the day that the referendum question is dealt with.. On another note CNS ..could the Elections Office confirm how many, if any, signatures failed verification.
CNS: We will most certainly ask that at the end of the process.
When they submit new unverified signatures, the process must restart entirely.
Not when they sign with the verifiers… try to keep up.
“Signing this referendum is NOT a vote against the port!!!” Perhaps that statement would be more believable if some, if not all of the leaders of the Port Referendum movement were not all known as being opposed to the CBF. Maybe if Mario was not so outspoken against the Piers at every opportunity, people would believe that the petition is simply to decide what the voters want, and not an attempt to stop it. Can we have a list of all the CPR leaders that actually support the Port or are they all members of Save our Reefs?. Again such a list might convince doubters that the real reason for the Petition IS to establish the wishes of the voting public.
and not to Save the Reefs by stopping the Port redevelopment.
Can you make up your own mind, or not?? I don’t understand this narrative of “vote for the PIR is a vote against/for….” If you are an adult, are entrusted with the right to vote, you get to CHOOSE!!
A vote for the PIR is a vote for self-determination of citizens/voters of Cayman. What is not to like about it? Is there something you’d like to change? Organise a PIR of your own. If I agree, I will sign it.
Signing this referendum is NOT a vote against the port!!!!
This statement needs to be at the TOP of every single article. The propaganda machine is stating for a fact that signing the petition is a vote against the port. This is a LIE. A bold-faced outright lie.
People believe anything and everything that the government states because they cannot understand nor believe that the government would lie about anything.
The government is also really good about lying by omission. Same as what your husband does when he says where he’s been, who he was with and how much he has had to drink.
There. Do you understand what that means now?
We could have that statement on every cereal box, every box of milk, or on billboards all over the island and they will still pedal their crap because it suits them. What we have to do is go and verify our signatures to get the numbers to trigger the Referendum then let the chips fall where they may. Those in favour of the port and those not in favour will all have the opportunity to say so by simply casting their vote. So I encourage everyone who has signed the petition to go ahead and get the verification done then go to the polls to cast their vote. The future of democracy depends on it thanks again CPR for all the hard work you done to hopefully make this a reality.
Yep I sure do know who they are, however we should deal with them at the next election.
9:04…pst…we dontblive in a democracy…and yes i am a native caymanian……this place is far from it….sad but true!😢
Take a break from Cayman and go live in North Korea, Venezuela, China, Russia, etc
After a decade or so, do come back to Cayman and tell us how it feels to live in a democracy.
It truly takes all kinds to create a democracy and you sir are a living example of that.
Just curious……. what form of government do you believe we live in, if not a Democracy/Parliamentary Democracy?
A cult of personality. Mac or Alden (although the two are now indistinguishable).
I disagree with this idea
But the comment isn’t entirely wrong
By any measure the PPM lost the last election
yet they still remain as a core part of the current government
If the people of the Cayman Islands wanted a PPM government they would have elected a PPM majority, they did not and thus we should not have a PPM government yet still they are in power
Casting a vote does not mean we live in a democracy if that vote carries no meaning and is ignored
The idea of democracy goes far beyond casting a vote once every 4 years
Public holiday here we come! Only reason I signed this road to nowhere foolishness.
Your job must really love you.
Anonymous at 10:32 they are probably waiting patiently for him to leave.
anonymous at 9:30 you do realise that you are being stupid don’t you? Secondly, persons with your mindset are merely stumbling blocks to proper democratic process, thirdly, if the verification meets the criteria holding the referendum is not ” foolishness” it is democracy at work no matter what the outcome is.
It’s your referendum that’s stupid.
Looks like we are fixing to have a referendum after all!!
I certainly hope so, but I believe the anuses in government will keep bringing up idiotic reasons to block it. You know who they are!
And what good will it do?
What good will it do? In a true democracy the elected representatives follow the will of the people, otherwise the ruling person or persons ignore the people and run things for their own benefit. Which do you think is better?
Think about it. Regardless of the outcome of the vote, the People, the voters will send a mandate to the government. That is huge and powerful.
What future issues will the voting public be able to solve? Can you imagine?
THAT’S what good it will do.
Thank you Elections Office and Thank You CNS for keeping us up to date!
Your hard work is appreciated.
would love to sign against.port..but …i afraid of retribution and being a target…so i will not…
Cayman NEEDS people to stand up and speak out for what’s right. No matter which side of the port debate you fall on, you absolutely should make your voice heard. That is what democracy is for. Your vote tells the politicians what laws to make, how to shape the future of Cayman, no matter if that is a regular election or a referendum. It sadly appears like the government of Cayman do what is right for the individuals in government, what will make them richer or make their lives better. Time for the people to tell government what they want for a change. Government is supposed to be the servant of the people. PLEASE make your voice heard, or you’ll have to explain to your children and grandchildren later how things in Cayman went wrong and you were too scared to put a cross in the right box.
Your concern is not ill founded. I have signed anyway. I cannot let the bastards in power wield it in the way they do any longer. Governor, you noting this. People in Cayman are afraid of their so called democratically elected government. Their vindictiveness is astounding, and a long way from the high principles of good governance you espouse.
To 10.05am “Their vindictiveness is astounding” Would be helpful if you provided proof of this.
You new here?
The referendum isn’t about being against it! That is the propaganda the CIG has created to steer you away from signing it. You can vote FOR the port in this referendum too. That’s how votes work – it’s not just one box to tick. If they knew they had the peoples support for this idiotic dock they would have called for a vote a long time ago. Please understand that. Now go sign and stop letting them keep you down and ignorant.
As a voter in a parliamentary democracy , you do understand that the politicians are meant to be afraid of you and not the other way around?
Get up and sign the form!
Oh superman, where are you now, when things are going wrong somehow? Men of steel, men of power are losing control by the hour!! We are the government, we will conquer!!!
This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and let’s start trying
To make it a place worth living in
I don’t think people understood what I was referring to. We the people have the power, we are the government!! I am one of the proud ones to sign the petition and willing to stand up to protect my country!! I think Mr. Beumont quite understood as he completed the other phase to the saying. Be strong Cayman, let us win!!
