Driver admits causing death a year after smash
(CNS): Anthony W. Scott (23) has admitted causing the death of former NRA employee, Thomas Rupert Hubbell (44), after a road crash that happened more than a year ago. Hubbell sustained a serious head injury in the smash, which happened on Shamrock Road, near to Spotts Dock, in June last year, and was in a coma until he died last month. Scott was driving a white Toyota Tercel when it collided with a wooden utility pole.
He was also badly injured as both men were trapped in the car and had to be cut free by fire crews. After he recovered Scott was charged with dangerous driving, but the charges have since been revised and on Friday he pleaded guilty to causing Hubbell’s death as a result of careless driving.
Scott was bailed to return to court in October for sentencing.
Why is it that in Cayman you get more prison time for stealing from your employer than taking someone’s life? I fully understand that Anthony Scott did not get into his car with the intention of killing someone. But at the end of the day, why aren’t people being held accountable for their actions? And my comment just doesn’t refer to this case, look back at previous deaths that have happened and it is shocking to see the lack of sentencing being handed down! They might as well be grounded or spanked!
Get in your car and kill someone due to your careless driving = a slap on the wrist
Steal from your employer = making long term friends at Northward
It just doesn’t seem right? Where is the value of the life that was lost? It doesn’t set a good example for the youth of the Island. If actions don’t have any repercussions, then there is no wonder why there are so many deaths on the roads. Very sad!
He should only get 3 months. He pleaded guilty as soon as the charges were amended. Remember the Tibbetts case he ran, tried to hide the car even went to the body shop to have it fixed. He only pleaded guilty because he was caught. This is a young man and deserve a second chance.
Yes, 3 months for killing someone criminally sends a strong message. Doubt he had any real prospect of defending the case, so giving credit for the obvious plea bargain seems to lenient.
I know both guys. Very good friends who made one sad mistake 🙁
That is murder, so jail for life.
Murder is premeditated idjut! It was a car ACCIDENT. No one plans to crash a car and kill another person. Stupid decisions can lead to an accident but they are never premeditated.
Unless you are going on a suicide pact
Premeditated means you are very well aware of the consequences of your actions. The driver knew he was going to fast and was aware of the consequences, but took the risk. That immature and irresponsible behavior, like many boys on this island, needs to be severely punished.
You wonder why ?
TO PROTECT THE LIVES OF THE ONES I CARE FOR ! ! ! ! !
Every day I try to stick to the speed limit and stop for STOP signs. But it is basically impossible.
Just now, i got run off the road by some boy in a honda in Savannah.
The next one I will kill !!!!
Enough is enough.
Another plea bargain. Careless driving rather than dangerous driving. No or limited prison time.
Honestly, we as drivers need to do a better job of driving on the roads. How many more examples of deaths and serious injuries we need to see because of careless and heartless drivers on the roads. The authorities in charge need to implement laws to punish these and would be reckless drivers.
Pay attention, don’t speed. Think of your fellow drivers.
So sad 2 young Caymanians lives completely destroyed!
I only have sympathy for the innocent one. The other fool needs to be kept inside for the protection of good law abiding people.
Dont be so heartless!
No sympathy for selfish criminals. Don’t be an apologist.
