CNB robbers get up to 14 years jail each
(CNS): The four men recently convicted for Cayman’s biggest bank robbery faced their fate in court on Wednesday and received sentences that ranged between eight and fourteen years for their part in the daylight heist. David Tamasa, George Mignot, Rennie Cole and Andre Burton were all found guilty last week for the second time by a Grand Court judge.
Before handing down the sentence Justice Ingrid Mangatal told the court that what the men did was a serious crime and the negative human effect may never be undone. She said the employees from the bank were still having flashbacks to that dreadful afternoon.
First to hear his sentence was Tamasa, who received 14 years for the robbery and seven years for the possession of an imitation firearm. Next George Mignot, the youngest of the group, was handed 12 years for the robbery and seven years for the firearm.
Cole was given eight years for his role in the robbery and four years for the firearm offence. As he is a Jamaican national, the judge also ordered that he be deported after his time is served. Lastly, Andre Burton, the getaway driver, was handed 14 years for the robbery and 5 years for the firearm. All the convictions will run concurrently.
This is the second time the court has heard the case against the four men. The four men were acquitted of the original convictions in April 2013 by the Court of Appeal last year and a retrial was ordered.
The men will appear in court again in September when they will face a compensation hearing. The bulk of the money stolen from the bank has never been recovered and the prosecution will seek to recover some of it by way seizer of the convicted men assets.
