COVID-19 detection rate falls by further 25%
(CNS): COVID-19 case detection and testing continued to decline in the Cayman Islands over the last week, according to the Public Health Department. Testing fell by 22%, continuing the significant decline over the last few weeks, and just 240 cases were officially reported to PHD, pushing the detection rate down by 25%. Meanwhile, the genomic sequencing data indicates the dominant variant circulating locally is BA.5 and its sub-variants.
Despite the drop in the number of people coming forward to report their infections, the virus is still circulating, as reflected in hospital admissions. Eight people admitted to the hospital during the week of 31 July to 6 August tested positive and half were admitted because of COVID-19 morbidity. In total eleven inpatients were treated for issues relating to the virus during that week, including three admitted in previous weeks who were still in hospital.
With the virus still spreading in the community, Public Health advised the public to take precautions to reduce the risk of catching COVID-19 and passing it on to others, including practising good hand hygiene, staying home when symptomatic or positive, and getting a booster vaccination.
While people in Cayman and around the world are largely getting on with their lives without restrictions, the number of global deaths decreased by 9% last week. However, according to the WHO’s latest statistics, there were well over 900,000 cases reported globally over the last 24 hours prior.
Meanwhile, the cases of monkeypox around the world is still increasing with cases in 90 countries, including Jamaica, where there are three cases. There are still no reported cases in the Cayman Islands.

We need remove on from Covid worry. It’s over. Move on
99+% of persons contract and recover from COVID with no lasting adverse consequences; COVID is endemic; masks are of no value in preventing transmission and neither is the vaccine or its boosters. Time to accept COVID as no riskier than any other risk to life we have live with from birth, and for Cayman to drop all restrictions, testing, vaxx requirements, etc.
When are we getting rid of this Travel Cayman garbage. Virtually no other country requires any type of registration. Why are we so backward and utterly incompetent?
Because Travel Cayman provides jobs for hundreds of Caymanians. Its become yet another extension of the CIG social welfare system.
I know of at least one case where an employer is insisting on returning to work, with a positive LFT. There are probably more.
Abolish Travel Time.
Dump the travel Cert along with Travel Cayman.
How many people are still employed by Travel Cayman, and what on earth do they do all day?
They drink complimentary rum punch.
Coffee , snacks at Camana Bay.
Transitioning to focus on preventing monkey pox. Wait till you see the new questions on the travel request.
Lol
Meanwhile… this is the WHO 2021 ‘outbreaks’ list:

Nipah virus disease
Zika virus disease
This is the 2022 ‘outbreaks’ list to the end of May 2022:

Wild poliovirus type 1
Extensively drug-resistant Shigella sonnei infections
Acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology

We should be more afraid.
The U.S. has reported 6.8K COVID deaths this month (NYT numbers).
That translates to more Americans dying per week than died in the 9/11 terror attacks.
This is the new normal, America’s political leaders insist, and the CDC plays along.
And some context here since we keep hearing flu comparisons.
From 2010 to 2020, flu season (October-May) killed about 12K-52K annually in the U.S.
COVID isn’t the flu.
By your own example it seems less dangerous when you consider how much more contagious it is. Almost everyone gets covid in a given year which is not the case with rhe flu
You need help
Its a rather large country. Average death rate is over 3 million a year; over 8000 a day, or using your metric, 80 9/11s a month. Covid may not be flu, but its no longer anywhere near the leading cause of death either.
How many local buildings have upgraded their air conditioning systems with filtration devices to prevent the recirculation of viruses?
None of them. Even HEPA cannot filter down 100% to the virus level. I mean, HEPA is much better than standard a/c filters and might well affect some viruses, but nothing measurable that you can count on.
God, go cower in your cave and stop bothering us.
Wear a mask, stupid
Yeah, because that’s going to make a real difference with a virus that will go through a cloth mask like its not even there.
US CDC has further eased COVID restrictions: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2022/p0811-covid-guidance.html/, and https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7133e1.htm?s_cid=mm7133e1_x.
Time for Cayman to fully open: no testing, no vax requirements, no quarantine. COVID is endemic — like the flu; we must move on with living.
The CDC was proven to be a politicallly motivated organization during this pandemic. The director is on tape joking that masks are a “Scarlet Letter”.
The relaxation of the American mandates is a stab in the dark at the worsening recession.
They are no longer the trustworthy organization that we all have been led to believe.
The U.S. has reported 6.1K COVID deaths in the first 11 days of this month.
For context, the 2019-2020 flu season (October-May), saw 22K American flu deaths.
Now, that’s a low year. The 2017-2018 flu season killed 60K.
For context, U.S. reported 60K COVID deaths in February.
Both viruses are dangerous to vulnerable people with comorbidities.
It’s pointless to debate COVID vs. flu and try to argue which is worse.
The thing is, for 99% of people, either infection is not a big deal. For other people it’s a major deal.
And the reality is, nearly everyone will catch Covid – probably every year or every couple of years.
So people saying we need to return to “normal” aren’t trying to say that Covid doesn’t exist or isn’t serious. They simply recognise that this is something we now need to live with.
If you’re vulnerable, or you are exposed to vulnerable people, or you particularly don’t want to get sick, it’s simple. Stay away from crowds and if you can’t, wear a mask. That’s it. End of story. Not much else you can do. If you’re paranoid, social distance – stay away from strangers. Do what you want. Leave the rest of us alone.
Wear a mask for the sake of others
Time to lift all Covid-19 regulations, especially quarantine for incoming unvaccinated travelers. There is no way to justify this any longer and it hurting our economic recovery.
Word.
The word is Covid is still a threat and Monkeypox is on the way, but yeah, let’s prop up another rube who cannot be bothered to read before commenting.
How many people has monkey pox killed? And what do you suggest CIG does to stop it?
Since you obviously didnt read the article and suffer from confirmation bias and/or have a personal prosperity agenda:
Despite the drop in the number of people coming forward to report their infections, the virus is still circulating, as reflected in hospital admissions. Eight people admitted to the hospital during the week of 31 July to 6 August tested positive and half were admitted because of COVID-19 morbidity. This is the advice for all diseases all the time. No other special measures required.
Except these measures do not rescue any risk of catching covid over time, especially with current variants having such high R numbers. All restrictions could do is slow a rate on infection to stop growth overwhelming services but that need is long passed as the low numbers you quote show. Countries that have abandoned all regulations have not been overwhelmed. The idea you are stopping cases in a population with these regulations is nonsense and fails to factor in a certain little thing called the time axis.
Keeping the unvaccinated out does help limit a certain type of Waffle House state traveller which improves the ambiance.
This thinking is peak bougeouise entitlement.
I worked hard so I never had to do anything other than fly over the fly over states.
but accurate
Mmm, Waffle House.
Waffle House is better than half of the restaurants here, open 24 hours, some have jukeboxes, and the most anti-snob zone.
Anthony Bourdain loved Waffle House. God rest his soul.
You’re elitist snobbery reeks of privilege and classism.
Long Live The Waffle House!
I believe everything you just said proved my point. It’s the clientele that is the issue not the menu. Are MAGA hats mandatory?
@1:45:
Please! Just leave the trashy American politics in the trash heap from whence it came and not bring the dreck to our shores.
Even pink kittie hats are allowed, Karen.
Preach!! And I’m double vaxed and boosted!
Are you really this dense? Economies across the world are either in recession or on the verge of recession. Tourism here isn’t the main source of revenue anymore.
The obvious economic advantages to masks during a pandemic is there are more people alive, more people healthy, more businesses fully staffed and thus more participants in the overall economy. Being anti-mask results in economic instability/weakness. I prefer a strong economy.
I bet you think Star Wars is a documentary
Some people think the Bible is an accurate history written by God. So believing in Stars Wars is not that different.
