Super-spreader parties behind COVID increases

| 21/04/2022 | 78 Comments

(CNS): Another 86 people officially tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, according to the latest update from Public Health. The rolling seven-day average has increased to 56 and there are now an estimated 733 people in isolation as a result of a positive test, while two patients are currently hospitalised with the virus. The latest weekly report documenting the situation reveals a 31% increase in virus cases between 10 and 16 April, which officials say was caused by a number of parties.

While the issue of the reopening of the port and the arrival of untested passengers in George Town is being blamed by many for the increase, officials are instead pointing to “gathering events, where no COVID-19 prevention measures were properly implemented, especially the wearing of masks”.

Public Health officials urged people to use masks during social events to reduce the risk of infection. “Wearing masks and vaccination, remain our best tools to control the spread of infection,” they said.

There have now been well over 22,000 cases of COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands since the first case in March 2020, and 27 deaths “from COVID-19 related causes”, Public Health said.

Last week 373 positive cases were officially recorded compared to 284 during the previous week. Nine people passed through the hospital with the virus, an increase by two patients over the previous week, reflecting the uptick in cases across the community that appears to have continued into this week. Last week’s average daily case number was 53 and a quarter of people who took official tests were positive.

While 94% of adults and children over five years old have had a least one dose of a vaccine, just 35% have been boosted. Meanwhile, government is now offering a fourth dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to anyone over 18 years old who was last vaccinated more than six months ago.

The politicians themselves helped to spread by holding large parties over the Easter weekend. The new North Side representative was one who did so with large numbers in attendance. Lots of craziness going on out ya.

Let’s try looking at this from a positive side.

We’ve had over 22,000 cases of COVID19 and just 27 deaths, and there have definitely been more unreported cases.

That’s is a morbidity rate of 0.12% per case.

UK has had 22 million cases and 173,000 deaths, almost 7 times higher morbidity rate.

No matter the complaints about the CI Government’s COVID policies, they have definitely been successful in reducing and limiting the deaths to Caymanians from the virus.

Are the cruise passengers wearing masks on board the ship? I highly doubt it, so what ‘super spreader’ party on island is even remotely close in size to a 4000 passenger incubation pod. Whether for or against masks, lets call things what they are. CIG if you are letting these ships come here there is virtually no point in continuing mandates on everyone else. Get rid of the mandates, or get rid of the ships, but maintaining both is ridiculous.

This is such an overused and pointless expression “we are so done with COVID”. Unfortunately, COVID isn’t going anywhere and will strike and sicken as it always has but with less ferocity. Maybe you are done with COVID but tell that to those who recently have had family members die regardless of numbers. Are you also “so done with the flu” or “so done with colds” Or perhaps so done with any illness or anything that causes an inconvenience?

And why is the science in Cayman apparently different to the science in the UK, where the CMO and HSA are meant to be getting their guidance from? Could it just be that the science and the scientific advice is the same, but then a political decision stands between that advice and policy?

How long is it since the CMO announced that as there was no evidence of an increase in infection rates since the restoration of limited number cruise ship tourism it was ok to remove the limitations on numbers? A week? But now there is u – which according to the prior logic should mean we now restrict numbers – apparently it’s because of local parties. Right you are. Presumably public health will be providing the details shortly to show that the majority of the additional cases were at said parties or close contacts of those that were, and absolutely definitely NOTpeople who are involved in cruise ship tourism, came into close contact with cruise ship tourists or close contacts of those that are. Or not.

So the problem is us not wearing masks and not the thousands of untested cruise ship passengers wandering around without masks. That’s strange because the only unmasked people I’ve seen have been tourists. Do they really think people are going to see masks as important if tourists and members of the government do not need to wear them? Either enforce the rules for everyone or get rid of it.

That is absolutely false. I just came back and the local population is not wearing masks except at Foster’s. The restaurant staff wear the masks around the chin and even though signs say you must wear a mask to enter the establishments, locals walk right in without. I felt and looked silly walking in to bars and restaurants wearing a mask. The hotel staff for the most part are still wearing masks.

No one in our 250 person accounting firms wears masks in the office, nor do people at gyms, bars, restaurants or gathering of friends. Just 20 minutes a week at Fosters and Blackbeards.

Parties? You’ve got to be kidding. I’ve been sitting in an open office for 9 months 5 feet from a dozen people.

Enough is enough, this virus is now endemic. Looking at the data, even from the massive data dumps from the pharma companies that created the vaccines, there is very little we can do to stop the spread of this thing. Thankfully, it is mild enough to be of very little risk to the vast majority of the population.

So get rid of these ridiculous mandates, protect those with actual risk, and let’s get on with life.

What a joke. Nine people went ‘through’ the hospital with COVID last week, meanwhile many more died from obesity, smoking, alcohol, drugs, and violence related causes.

Masks are a failed policy. For one, people don’t even wear them correctly. Two, cloth masks provide no protection. Three, mask protocols have little to no evidence they are slowing or stopping the spread of the Corona virus. End the mandates and free the face. There are more important problems to worry about like where my next meal is coming from.

If you spent a little time to learn how to properly wear a mask, it would protect you and the people around you. If you spent a little money to buy the proper mask instead of wearing a cloth mask, it would protect you and the people around you. Masks do work to protect if you took these two steps and weren’t ignorant about it.

And now we know who was behind the push to risk health ans safety for profits. The Chamber of Commerce wants the government to drop mask requirements now despite news like this from the UK.

    United Kingdom COVID update:

The UK registers its deadliest day in fourteen months with a record 646 deaths.

    – New cases: 19,482 (-6,665)
    – Average: 23,122 (-1,875)
    – In hospital: 17,368 (-515)
    – In ICU: 349 (+13)
    – New deaths: 646 (+138)
    – 7 Day Average: 234 (+43)

The Chamber, CITA and Reopen Cayman with the help of Fox News parrots and Q Anon crazies wants us all to ignore what’s happening in countries where tourists are travelling to and from for the profiteers.

That’s the reason I still have a stack of 30 LFTs in the bathroom cabinet. Some of them may be suspect of false readings, depending upon the news source you believe is vetted.

On occasion — in the past and recently — when I feel sick, I isolate. In recent times, I use the LFT. So far, all negative. If one were positive, I would do a double isolate — one, from the public and two, from my family, and THEY would use the LFTs.

Long before Covid-19, I stayed the **** at home when I was sick.

I would struggle with whether or not to report it.

I’m pretty certain I would eventually report it, after my family had gone to the store and stocked up on a month supply of everything.
