Almost 600 people in official COVID-19 isolation
(CNS): The number of officially reported coronavirus infections continues to climb, and Public Health said Monday that there are an estimated 596 active cases in the Cayman Islands. There are three patients in hospital for COVID-related causes, two of whom are vaccinated.
The seven-day rolling average for 4 April has increased to 43. Another 74 people tested positive over the weekend, including three new cases in the Sister Islands, which has now recorded 660 cases since the current outbreak started last September.
The Health Services Authority said the Flu Clinic at the Aston Rutty Centre on the Brac closed Monday and anyone with flu symptoms can be seen at the Faith Hospital Emergency Room.
“The number of flu cases has reduced as we near the end of flu season, therefore the dedicated clinic will be stood down,” said Dr Srirangan Velusamy, Director of Sister Islands Health Services.
However, the Aston Rutty Medical Wing will still be used for COVID-19 PCR and Certified Lateral Flow (LFT) testing. COVID-19 testing is also available at the Little Cayman Clinic daily from 1pm – 2:30pm.
The HSA has published a new vaccination clinic schedule until Easter. This week clinics are largely taking place at Foster’s supermarkets and next week they will return to 131 MacLendon Drive, in George Town. Most clinics are now in the afternoons.

Three cruise ships in port today, I see …
CaymanNewsService can you please help us parents understand why Public Health claims they want to get more kids vaccinated, but are making it so difficult?
They currently (as of 5 April) have no dates published for when kids can be vaccinated. Previously offered that they require appointments. Now state that they will be working with schools.
I can tell you my own children attend CIS, and we were given LESS THAN 24 hours notice of the HSA nurse coming to the school at 3pm (after school hours) which my kids were not able to participate in.
Is it true that they actually want kids vaccinated? If so, why are they not doing vaccinations at convenient times for children (and their parents) at a convenient place such as Camana Bay?
It feels like this is just lip service, but they really don’t want them to come out. Why would a child require an appointment, but adults do not? Why did they not have multiple clinics at school, during school hours? Why only 24 hours notice?
I doubt a concerned parent behind this post.
Rising Covid numbers: just as predicted by anyone not comatose. Did not take a crystal ball to know this would occur. With cruise ships back, travel restrictions eased, protective measures winding down, and the new more contagious variant gaining traction, we will see sharper increases in Covid infection numbers, morbidity, mortality. Look for it.
Still finding it difficult to comprehend how serious we took Covid after 2 deaths and now we largely dismiss 24 more as acceptable losses.
22 of those were unvaccinated. Those that do not help themselves are acceptable losses. We cannot cower from life to protect the stupid.
Truly deranged. No human life should ever be regarded as disposable. If you actually believe this, you are a sick individual.
How many died from cancer and CVD?
Ok – but so what – the approach is actually working perfectly. Barely anyone in the hospital, very few deaths.
This is literally the best outcome imaginable.
Look where we were 2 years ago. Predictions (admittedly obviously deeply flawed, even at the time) of 900 people dead. No idea if a vaccine was even possible, never mind easily made available.
If you’re still dwelling on covid you should probably go see a psychologist. I’m not saying that to be snarky but as serious advice. With that kind of negative outlook you’re more likely to get seriously ill from stress than from covid.
Number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the UK tops 20,000, the highest since February 2021.
No worries!
Yes, no worries. Everyone is getting on with life in the UK and and people are going to work and out and about even if they test positive. There are only about 300 on ventilators in the UK out of 5 million live background cases.
Good news! That is, unless you are one of the 300 or its a loved one.
You seem to think people are disposable.
It’s not that difficult to comprehend.
We don’t take public health that seriously. Never have, never will.
People die of the flu all the time. We don’t make the flu vaccine mandatory. Why not? Even if it doesnt always work against all strains and then sometimes only provides some protection (sound familiar?)
We dismiss deaths from multiple causes all the time and deem them “acceptable”.
If we didn’t do that to some degree we would have to live in a bubble.
It doesnt mean we shouldnt make adjustments – eg maybe not have a toxic mound of flaming trash next to a school would be a good start.
Maybe funding the health care system instead of the other gazillion boondoggles around here would help.
I don’t think you will get much support in increasing restrictions for covid though. I think most rational people would look at 25 losses over two years in the context of this pandemic as not only acceptable but as a good result.
This doesn’t mean it’s not a tragedy that people died. It means that society has to function and we have to make trade-offs all the time.
What part of “cases are rising” do you pandemic deniers not understand. Are you ready for another big wave? Because, just like the US and the UK, it’s coming.
We had a big wave – hospitalisations were manageable, deaths were minimal. We now have even more immunity conferred by prior infection and vaccination.
Unless a new strain develops which is more virulent, we will do just fine with the new Omicron strain.
The numbers are bearing that out – there are only two people in the hospital and I doubt we’ll exceed 20 again even if the numbers ramp up to the levels of a few months ago.
Stop fear mongering.
We have not had a BIG wave, yet.
you won’t have Big wave.
What do you call the highest per capita rate of covid in the world?
From a November Compass article:
“The Cayman Islands is currently the world’s hotspot for new COVID-19 cases. For the past week, the New York Times has featured Cayman at the top of the list for daily average cases per 100,000 people.
Cayman’s daily average rate of 147 new COVID cases means it leads the world when that figure is adjusted for Cayman’s population size.”
So pretty sure we’re going to struggle to top that.
What part of go hide under your bed if you really want to do you not understand?
You think the pandemic is over? Keeping up with what’s happening in other countries? Think Cayman is somehow special? Believe in unicorns? Keep wish thinking. Boxers that drop their guard using end up Ko’d.
Put on your big boy pants and mosey on back to the office.
Cases are no longer the issue. Vaccinated death rate is the only metric that matters and that is now so low that it cannot justify restrictive policies any more.
Get vaccinated and live your damn life! You can still protect yourself and be fine. What good is a life in hiding?
You are still alive and shouting the same alarm after more than two years. You are like the fictitious character in the boy who cried wolf. Time for you to be seen but not heard anymore.
This is all becoming so frustrating now. The government have opened the borders to mass cruise tourism which will inevitably result in an increase in cases within the local community. The government then proceed to require residents to isolate and take a lft test before even returning home from abroad by plane. Its a massive double standard with local people again suffering the most. Pact looking out for the best interests of the majority of their voters…yeah right…
Atrocious double standard by those clamoring for more shots.
Who cares? The whole thing is now becoming ridiculous!
I walk into a restaurant or coffee shop. I have to wear a mask as I enter the premises. I then sit at a table with a drink I have just purchased, and then all of a sudden, I am immune from Covid or cannot transfer it, and so I can then remove the mask!
People were constantly advised to take the vaccine. Some people refused and that was up to them. The virus has infiltrated the population and for those persons vaccinated, there is a less risk of serious illness/hospitalisation/death if they become infected.
Like the flu, those who have underlying health conditions are more likely to become serious ill if they contract Covid.
In the UK, there have been 160,000 deaths ‘associated’ with Covid. From a Freedom of Information request, it was discovered that only 17,000 individuals actually died solely of Covid-19: the rest, had underlying health conditions or had coincidently had the virus when they were hit by a bus!!
The 17000 figure was nonsense spread by anti-vax lunatics who could not understand data sets. Pretty much everyone over 50 has at least one underlying condition. Only the truly ignorant Facebook cut and paste brigade parrot out that figure that has been debunked time and time again.
Deaths recoding Covid as a cause of death on the death certificate is a better metric. The true “death from covid” death figure is in fact higher than the 160k figure as that figure excludes those that survived more than 28 days from a first positive test which happens more often than at the start of the pandemic when as testing is available and new treatments mean people live longer before dying.
Release these poor people! Being locked up like prisoners. We need to move on from this pandemic!
False equivalency.
We still have isolation? Thought we had ended all rules like the normal world?
We hope. The whole thing was incredibly destructive. So many people’s lives destroyed.
We still have the hand sanitizer defense force at Kirk Market & other supermarkets , people driving their own car wearing a mask ( with the windows up….) Islands that time forgot.
Release the second booster already!
Release the kracken!
Quick, open the field hospital!
