DG: No vaccine mandate for local civil servants

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson addresses Parliament on Tuesday

(CNS): Deputy Governor Franz Manderson told Parliament on Tuesday that he is extremely concerned about the safety of civil servants on the front line who will not take the vaccine. During the debate on changes to immigration laws to mandate vaccinations for work permit holders, he said that, given the position of the elected government that no Caymanians should be forced to get vaccinated, there would be no enforcement for government workers. However, he begged those civil servants who have not done so to rethink their position and get the shots.

He said there are plans to put provisions in the Public Service Law for non-Caymanian government workers on contract, but there would be no mandate for locals. But he said he was worried about all unvaccinated workers, especially those on the front line. Manderson said he did not want to go to a funeral of a civil servant, which he said could happen.

Expressing concern about some staff who are dogmatic in their opposition and are even forwarding COVID vaccine misinformation to colleagues, friends and families via social media. He implored civil servants, especially those on the front line, to do the right thing and get vaccinated.

The deputy governor said the civil service should be leading in vaccination levels, as it is “life saving”, and he pointed out the problems of unvaccinated front-line workers who are dealing with COVID-19 positive travellers and can pass on the virus more easily.

Manderson said those in public service were facing new challenges that come with the introduction of community spread, such as how to deal with people who are told at a moment’s notice that they must isolate. Some such people were not given any assistance when they needed it.

He said they were now working overtime to change that; they are now checking on them and answering their calls and giving them the help they need. Apologising to those who had not received the expected level of service, he promised that “we will get this right”.

Franz I can help ya get the front line staff vaccinated give them a choice on which vaccine they want the free one that killing and harming people or the other one that is less harmful and don’t have the MRNA in it. Its that simple Franz.. GO PASS THAT LAW NOW PLEASEEEEEE!!!

  2. ThIs WrItInG Is VeRy IrRiTaTiNg says:

Natural selection will take care of the weak in the herd and reduce the number of civil servants. The ones that are left will have no choice but to get vaccinated because just about every place you will be able to get to from here by plane when the border reopens will require proof of vaccination. So if these people ever want to travel again they will need to be vaccinated at some point.

Open the border, cancel the quarantine requirements and let it play out. We’ve been locked up too long at this stage. The rest of the world has moved on.

  3. Truth says:

Obviously we are now NOT all in this together. Expats now have to do their part by mandate. Caymanians have mandated that expats do their part also so they don’t have to. Expats have always known how disrespectful Caymanians can be toward expats but have not reciprocated. For many that ends now.

    • Anonymous says:

LMAO have not been reciprocated? The most disrespectful people are expats.

    • Orrie Merren says:

We all need to respect one another. This is coming from a multi-generational Caymanian, who means you no disrespect, but takes your comments as disrespectful. We are all under pressure, but untruthful sweeping generalizations (such as yours here) is only putting fuel on a fire that need not be the case. If you don’t like Caymanians or the Cayman Islands jurisdiction, then you are always free to leave. God bless you.

      • Anonymous says:

I am sure Caymanians have no problem with expats filling the void, but when expats start shoving their Fabian doctrines and ideologies down Caymanians’ throats, then I would say that would be a problem.
Cayman was perfectly fine before Johnny came lately, right?

  4. Anonymous says:

    This is not for everyone.
The unvaccinated should have limited public when the border is open, because now is not the time for: travels, public gatherings, going to bars, and eating out in restaurants.
Let the vaccinated people carry on as normal as a reward for their compliance.

    • Anonymous says:

Listen to yourself… Reward compliance? What kind of sheep are you? You followed exactly what someone told you to do and now you want others who dare think for themselves to be the bad guy so you can comfort yourself about your own life?

Again, its always your type of people begging other people to do things for you. “Oh no someone else makes me uncomfortable by not being a slave like me.. quick big brother government… go stop them for me”

Completely dependent on someone else for food, shelter, safety. What do you even do for yourself. You probably slave yourself away at job you didn’t even want to work at to begin with but someone 2 years until you figured it out became 5 which became your entire life stuck in traffic to go waste 8 hours of your life to go back in traffic and then to a home the bank owns to watch senseless TV as a reward for your compliance and then you purchase things to cover over your lack of purpose.
Every aspect of your existence is probably dictated by authority masquerading as original thought. You are nothing but a slave at this point.

As a matter of interest if a work permit holder’s blood test comes back positive for HIV and the other diseases what happens?

insurance companies need to wade into this – increase their premiums if they’re not vaxxed. Simple. Between that and Darwin problems should be solved by Christmas. And don’t even think of giving an ICU bed to them if other members of the community are in need of one.

    • Anonymous says:

And while we are at why not increase premiums if there is a history of
      Heart disease
      Diabetes
      Smoking
      TB
      Cancer
      Alcoholism
      Etc etc
      In your family.

      • Anonymous says:

Someone with a family genetic predisposition doesn’t have to necessarily switch those genes on, they can eat better, chose not to smoke or drink, get TB shot, or put some sunscreen on. Stay in school kids.

      • Anonymous says:

I assume sarcasm as all those will increase premiums.

        Age will also increase them.

Unfortunately as many companies on island pay the health insurance (or some of it) they will suffer the added expenditure reducing everyones bonus if they have them.

      • Anonymous says:

They already increase premiums for the above conditions.

      • Anonymous says:

        don’t they already?

    • Fred says:

I don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol and don’t eat fast food. Increase premiums for all smokers, alcoholics and fast food customers and don’t have an ICU bed unit at the hospital if they show up with any symptoms associated with their addictions.

    • Anonymous says:

Or you could just burn them at the stake and get it over with. Maybe just hang them? Is that what you want? Do you understand that you are now someone that another person must defend their life against(and I will) or are you just that ignorant?

  7. Anonymous says:

If mandatory vaccination were the plan for expatriate workers, they should have started with the Civil Service…..

  8. Anonymous says:

So that means that as an older fully vaccinated citizen I will not be able to go about my business at post office, Gov admin bldg, hospital, get my booster because civil servants and frontline workers will not all be vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

Whether they are vaccinated or not they can still spread it, and you can still catch it and spread it also.

    • Anonymous says:

And no door opening to census visitors…

      • Anonymous says:

You people are nuts. Open the door to the census worker and then step back 6 ft and answer the questions. You are making such a big deal out of everything. Open the border and when you see that things aren’t as bad as you are imagining (especially with your high vaccination rate) you will be wondering why you all panicked for months over all this.

    • Big Bobo In West Bay says:

The Canadian Prime Minister directed today that ALL / ALL Canadian civil servants must be vaccinated by next month or go on unpaid leave.

What does Canada know that we don’t know?

    • Anonymous says:

No. It means there is still a open pandemic that is not any one persons fault.

Everyone is at risk here. Even the vaccinated and healthy. Blaming it all on certain persons is ignorant and obviously culturally Biased. Learn, evolve, love. Or hate and die. Your choice still as it is not mandated yet by your masters.

  9. Anonymous says:

you would think the personal videos that went viral of anti-vaxxers using their dying breathe to tell people they were wrong and everyone should go get vaccinated would be enough to change minds, but even then…..natural selection at work I guess.

  10. Anonymous says:

Yup. Another politically motived “follow the science” policy. NOT. And yet they wonder why people distrust them.

Even Saunders and his bredren will soon realize this will hurt their incomes and property investments.
Be careful who you hurt in your attempts to ensure your re-election.

  11. Anonymous says:

In fairness, they should not be “mandated” to get the vaccine.

However as a danger to the general public and their colleagues they should be told that if they are not vaccinated they will need to go on unpaid leave.
If they are on unpaid leave for more than 5 working days then that is mutually accepted as being their decision to leave their jobs.

No paid leave ’till retirements, no large termination payouts, no golden pension top ups, no medical coverage till they kick the bucket – they put their own ill informed ignorance over their livelihoods.

Their careers. Their choice – to coin a phrase.

Covid is here the science says the spreaders are the vaccinated equally with unvaccinated. Time we recall Wayne Panton because he is scared man and we need leaders not losers.

    • Anonymous says:

The science does not say that at all. Unvaccinated people are far more likely to get covid in the first place so they are more likely to spread it. Unfortunately that’s why it is spreading amongst unvaccinated children.

    • Anonymous says:

Errr look up words before using them. “Equally” is used incorrectly.

Unvaccinated are more likely to pass it on. This isn’t even news, since it’s been known for a very, very, very long time.

Blatantly prejudicial but seems like DG, His Ex and Govt. don’t care! Don’t tell me they can’t see that!!

I feel ALL health care workers (my doctors urged me to get the shot so why not their own) and frontline public service workers should be vaccinated, except for documented health reasons. Option B: risk losing your job! Replace with someone who has no prob taking a shot – more WPs but what’s new?

But “the position of the elected government that no Caymanian civil servant” will be mandated to take the vaccine is morally and socially wrong!!!

This will not even stand as long as it takes the HRC to draft an objection!!!

    B/B Caymanian!

05/10 @7:30pm – Bravo!!! I agree and fully support your position – actually that could go for private businesses as well! Perhaps you have the ‘right’ to know!

I’m a retired Caymanian public servant and can identify with you, plus being firmly in the “vulnerable category”. I’m not waving any flag for “immuno-compromised rights”!

I fully support the right of ANYONE who chooses NOT to get the vaccine, for whatever reason. As far as I’m concerned, NO ONE has the right to (wantonly) compromise my health, but if that is the case, then I have a RIGHT to know who and where such people are!! Why not??

If the anti-vaxxers believe so much in rights, human rights/equal rights/moron rights, etc. they should be proud to permanently display their convictions in the form of some identifiable tag! They should agree that everyone else has the Right to be protected and know who they’re protected from! What if that were mandated, eh??

Challenge to the anti-vaxxers!!!! Let’s hear from you!

    • Anonymous says:

Maybe they should have their own country?

    • Anonymous says:

No need. The vaxxed already have identification to prove it. The unvaxxed won’t.

Go after the group that can’t vote…no repercussions. How cowardly are they? Makes me sick to my stomach. Either mandate vaccinations for all civil servants or none.
    CaymanKind at its best.

    • Anonymous says:

You can argue that applying for a work permit is a choice, and put health based conditions on it. That’s not discriminatory – you are not discriminating between one potential applicant and another on a matter outside their control. However, when you tell a expat civil servant , who doesn’t need a work permit, that the must get jabbed or lose their job because of the need to protect society outweighs their civil rights, and the Caymanian sitting next to them and equal;y capable of catching and transmitting the disease that they don’t have to get jabbed if they don’t want to simply because they are a Caymanian, then that is flagrant discrimination and completely erodes the moral justification in compelling the expat. Good luck with the judicial review, Franz.

      • Anonymous says:

as an expat, I really do not see the issue with the government implementing vaccines for foreigners. it already happens on island for the kids to go to school…you have to have an aids test to get a permit… no one complains. Try going to Africa, or south east Asia without getting the vaccines they mandate. you don’t like it, don’t come is what they would tell you. the next argument is but we are here already so why do we have to… expats are still a guest in the country, and if the government wishes its guests to be jabbed, than so be it..

Not if you’re vaccinated. Doesn’t it protect you from serious illness and death? Isn’t that why everyone wanted to take it?

    • Vaccinated frontline worker says:

Vaccine should be mandatory across the board for all FRONTLINE workers firstly! There are some persons that will be exempt, Ofcourse but need this exemption from a Doctor.

Thank you DG. I share your concern for the anti vaxers in CBC who has been sending videos of unknown YouTubers to everyone they know. You are right they are going to get someone they care about seriously ill or dead.

Remember when you are hooked up to a ventilator the vaccine won’t help.

The long term effects of Covid 19 are scary. It attacks major organs causing damage.
You can take a chance and refuse to be vaccinated. However, you would always be at risk of contracting it acting as a Petri dish for a more deadly variant which you can pass on. Just think about that for a second. You could become famous for creating a new mutant strain! Praise the Lord and Pray about it, but think God did give you a Brain.

Stop their salary, Franz. The same people who are forwarding all the stupid false information are those intellectually and work energy challenged civil servants who ever since email was invented have spent their time sending prayers, Bible texts and other friggen foolishness around while doing zero work other than that of their church in government time. We even had a top accountant doing her SDA work for donkey years when she should have been governments working.

    You’ll be fine.

So, non-Caymanian government workers may get covid, but guess the local government workers are immune from the risk? If this government was really for their people this would be a mandate for ALL front line workers no matter if they were local or not.

    • Anonymous says:

Thank you so much. I said the same thing. The emphasis was always on being in this together and looking after our neighbours. So why now should caymanians be exempt from mandatory vaccination? Had no idea that covid only infected non-caymanians.

  23. Anonymous says:

Government should mandate ALL public servants to be vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

Of course they should. It’s shameful that they haven’t. And if they are too scared then mandate that they are either vaccinated or submit test results at their own expense every 72 hours. But do something other than beg.

Perhaps the Government does not appreciate that refusing to mandate vaccines for frontline healthcare professionals whilst mandating it for all expatriates in the private sector is what makes the mandate so offensive, and liable to challenge. Come on guys! We are so much better than this.

  28. Anonymous says:

    Why not?
If they don’t want the vaccine, then they should be mandated to be covid tested 2x a week or lose their jobs.

    • Anonymous says:

No vaccines stops you from spreading Covid, so you’ll be tested 2x a week or lose your job.

      • Anonymous says:

The vaccinated spread covid at an extremely low amount compared to someone who is unvaccinated. The unvaccinated have a greater chance of getting covid and ending up hospitalized and or dying.

That is all that really needs to be said.
