Premier Wayne Panton and Troy Leacock at the CITA meeting

(CNS): Premier Wayne Panton has confirmed the target of vaccinating 80% of the population against COVID-19 before the borders are open. Even though the number of people taking up the vaccine is now just a trickle, he stated that government was not prepared to revise the target at this point and that any consideration about changing that or switching to a ‘plan B’ would be made closer to the date.

Speaking at the Cayman Islands Tourism Association meeting on Thursday, Panton made it very clear that, despite the pressure from those in the sector, the PACT Government wants to see as many people in Cayman vaccinated as possible before the borders open, as health remains the priority over economics.

With just 49 people getting there first dose over the last day and 61 completing the two-dose course, there were no changes to the national rates of 67% and 70% of the population respectively just six weeks ahead of the proposed 9 September opening date.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus is still being picked up in travellers in quarantine and isolation as another two tested positive over the last day. There are currently eleven active cases of the virus among the 1,299 people in quarantine.

Check back to CNS tomorrow for a full report from CITA and more details on government’s plans for reopening the border, mandatory vaccines for permit holders and the way to ensure that Cayman can be the first country in the world to open safely and not cycle back into lockdown.

The first problem with that 80% goal is the population number they’re basing their calculations on…..it’s a guess at best.

  2. JTB says:

Why stick to an obviously unachievable target? Everyone who wants the vaccine has had it. If they have held out this long they are not going to change their minds – unless of course the imminent re-opening of the border and the tourist economy spurs them on.

Why must the majority of Caymanians and residents pick up the bill for the personal decisions of the unvaccinated?

It makes no sense at all.

Delta has sadly changed the game and it looks like this pandemic has some time to go. Memorial hospital in Florida has 55 ICU patients of which only 1 is unvaccinated. I hope the CIG does not screw this up.

CNS: That is what it says but I believe it is a typo. This is about the same hospital – ‘Biggest Tragedy Is Preventable Loss Of Life’: Memorial Healthcare System Chief Urges Public To Get COVID Vaccine
“We know that a high percentage of the elderly are getting vaccinated, and we are seeing more of the younger population,” [Dr. Aharon Sareli] said.

“More than 96% are unvaccinated.” He added in the ICU, out of 55 people who are fighting for their lives, only one person has been vaccinated.

Has some time to go? Covid was never going to go away, but the vaccine keeps you safe. You thought Covid would go away magically and we would open to a Covid free world? No chance

    • Anonymous says:

      Thank you CNS

Hmmm. I read the article and that’s not what I read. The person quoted is an entirely different person at an entirely different hospital. Could be a typo I suppose, but it wasn’t “added”. Don’t mean to nitpick but I think we have enough confusion without adding more editorial speculation especially with the data coming out showing it could certainly go either way.

CNS: Oh, for heaven’s sake! Can you stop wasting everyone’s time with silliness, please. If you’re going to “nitpick”, at least read the articles properly so you don’t make a twit of your anonymous self. Different people quoted but clearly the same hospital. In the first linked article, the commenter called it “Memorial hospital” but if you read the article, they were clearly referencing Memorial Health Care System.

Other hospitals like Memorial Health Care System say they are overwhelmed. “This morning, we had over 420 patients with COVID. And 55 are in the ICU. In the ICU, 55 people are fighting for their lives and only one of them is unvaccinated. Most of the patients are in their 30s and 40s and it is very sad to have someone die in the ICU by themselves without a touch of someone’s face of seeing loved ones,” said Juana Mejia, a COVID ICU nurse manager.

      In the article I linked:

… the Chief of Critical Care for the Memorial Healthcare System is making a plea to the public to get vaccinated and help curb the number of cases… “This morning we had over 420 patients with COVID and 55 of them in the ICU. On June 19th we had less than 90 cases,” he said … He added in the ICU, out of 55 people who are fighting for their lives, only one person has been vaccinated.

Just read the article in the Compass re.Cases of Summer Sniffles Climbing. BTW- the symptoms listed in that article are the same symptoms they are listing for the Delta Variant.
(Fever, muscle pain, fatigue, headache, coughing, stuffy nose, and in a few cases, nausea and diarrhea).

What you are requesting is sending chills down my spine, sweating arm pits and a racing heart beat, but I understand and I wish not to see, unlike you. If that what it takes that’s what it will be.
That ideology created the world we are living in, and you are happy with your creation because it’s benefiting you, hence the hold on such an outdated belief.

We studied to gain knowledge and with experiences teaches wisdom, which makes us expert in our chosen field, which some use for good.

    Did God create this ideology?
You are telling me, we haven’t change in the past two hundred years? This is sad that you are still peddling this belief, no wonder for you, evolution has stopped.

We didn’t look like this in the beginning, have we not changed, are we not changing?

If you take away the race, color, and ethnicity you are left with just people.
The captured were dominated but once integrate into societies and given equal opportunities, the intelligence becomes par and everyone can aspire to be what they aspire to be.
    Our thoughts are always evolving.

Should we document own experience, so that there will be many stories to tell, and not just one.
Why should one single account be the truth of past events?

I am happy you do not possess the power to wipe everyone off the planet who disagrees with you.

Also, I am not on here to win anyone over, as we all suppose to have a choice under the system that is created.

Let’s watch this is live entertainment for those who understand.

The compass article says the Premier May lower target if 80% is not reached, but doesn’t want to say that yet?!?
Then, in same article, opening will depend on how other jurisdictions are doing w/ Covid. Makes sense or is that just the next moving of the goal post when the 80% isn’t reached?
Covid is here forever. Need to open up and work around it. Companies / jurisdictions have been open since last July and working around Covid. There are ways to do it. My company has not shut down once.

You don’t seem to understand how vaccines work. Jumping up and down laughing at breakthrough cases as proof the vaccines don’t work is ignorant. The point is, you’re 20 times less likely to be hospitalised and 50+ times less likely to die. If 4 people were hospitalised then without the vaccine they could have expected more like 100 and several dead.

Sheesh, how is this still needing to be explained?

Top scientists today claimed the Indian ‘Delta’ variant is not spreading as quickly as chickenpox, despite US health officials saying it is just as contagious.

Data circulating within America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claimed people infected with the mutant strain can go on to infect eight others.

The same internal document also alleged that fully-vaccinated people can spread the Indian variant just as easily as unvaccinated people because they carry a similar amount of the virus in their nose and mouth.

Results showed that vaccinated people who get COVID-19 have same viral levels as the unvaccinated

The science is appearing increasingly clear. Vaccinated or unvaccinated, moment Covid gets reintroduced to Cayman, we will be back to masks and social distancing. Is that worth it, or should we maintain our bubble (through quarantine)? We can do that and allow long stay visitors (30 days plus). Our choice, but like Pandora’s Box, we only get to open once. As long as CIG leaves the power with them, they will continue to avoid the vaccine. The only way you will see decent uptick in vaccination rate is to announce the border is opening on Sept 9 regardless, then the portion of unvaccinated that are reasonably intelligent will get a vaccine to protect themselves and their families. The rest will remain unvaccinated, and it will just have to be at their own risk. What’s the old saying…you can bring a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. The first thing is to stop providing misleading population figures. The population figure in every country is always a range as it’s difficult to be exact. You have a low, medium and high number. It is always agreed best practice to take the medium figure as your population figure. This is what we’ve always done. As soon as PACT came into power, they changed this and started using the unrealistic maximum figure. – Thus aiming for 80% of a population that is unlikely to even exist.

If in doubt, just ask the Director of the Economic and Statistics Office, he has provided the population figure and the PACT Government have overruled him…

I’m personally not a fan of the vaccine, but our whole family had it as we realised if we want to ever get back to whatever normal life returns eventually as, we ultimately have no choice. Not a nice position for any of us to be in.

The Caribbean is open all around. People are traveling to those other islands. They will find places that have sun, beaches, less expensive, OPEN. Shut down for 2 years is not good for tourism. Some may say who cares, but tourism has a trickle down effect. The border needs to open now so those traveling for the high season can start planning on Cayman as a destination.
The border also needs to open so those residents that want to make holiday plans to see relatives that they haven’t seen in two years can get affordable flights and get off the island and spend time with family abroad.
The need to start living is now. Get rid of the quarantine period for vaccinated travelers, keep the testing if need be, keep the masks in high traffic areas, and open the borders. Overcome the fear and start living and joining the rest of the world, see family and friends again.

I’m afraid it is already too late for high season 2021. I have a close friend who is a property manager of 25 vacation rental properties. She told me recently that 20 of those properties were booked for the Christmas Holidays, the final payment is due September 15. Out of those 20 bookings she has received 15 cancelations in the last couple of weeks. She said people are sad to cancel and want to come here but they are afraid to wait longer to book another location for Christmas and they do not want to make their final nonrefundable payment in September then find out the government won’t accept their vaccine proof to avoid quarantine. I imagine our large hotels are experiencing the same sort of high season cancelations.

There are too many unknowns in the reopening plan. Reaching 80% is not likely but even if we do reach that number the fact remains that PACT is not going to accept the US vaccine cards. If visitors can’t be assured they can enter without quarantine for their two-week vacation they are not going to book a trip here.

Someone else said this recently and I agree; tourists will find other islands, they will like those places, and the odds are good those people will return to their newly found destinations. I fear Cayman’s tourism industry is facing a very long road to recovery. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look promising that the recovery will begin in 2021. PACT is failing us in many ways. I had hope for them, I’ve lost all all respect for Panton. I will not be voting for him again.

Can we confirm what percentage of the population is under 12? Estimates I’ve seen are around 15% so we effectively need to vaccinate 95% of those eligible to make the absurd 80% target, which is definitely not going to happen and is patently ridiculous.

Further those under 12 (and really all under 18) are at almost no risk from covid. Here is a recent article by New York Magazine which lays this all out.

    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/07/the-kids-were-safe-from-covid-the-whole-time.html

And one of the most important sections as it relates to children:

“But first: the kids. Over the course of the pandemic, 49,000 Americans under the age of 18 have died of all causes, according to the CDC. Only 331 of those deaths have been from COVID — less than half as many as have died of pneumonia. In 2019, more than 2,000 American kids and teenagers died in car crashes; each year, according to some estimates, about a thousand die from drowning.

Last year, fewer kids died of COVID-19 than of heart disease, “malignant neoplasms,” suicide, and homicide — not to mention birth defects, which killed hundreds of times more. All told, 600,000 Americans have lost their lives to COVID over the course of the pandemic; just 0.05 percent of those were under the age of 18, a population that represents more than 20 percent of the country’s population as a whole.”

If government has control to keep the border closed and has control to stipulate the 80% figure, mandate everyone must be vaccinated. Problem solved.

Looks like the conspiracy lag is closing the gap. Vaxxed transmit as easily as unvaxed. https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/07/29/cdc-mask-guidance/

So what’s the magical logic now?

Far less damage is done in those infected with the vaccine. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is 96% effective against hospitalisation after 2 doses.

Why are you worrying about the unvaxxed? They can simply get vaxxed. They choose not to. The point is we’re being told that the unvaxxed are spreaders and the vaxxed are not. That seems to be untrue old info..1 week. If the vaxxed and the unvaxxed can spread it to the .0001% who cannot vax then there is no valid argument to insist on vaccinating the holdouts. Open the border or go into full lockdown and curfew, the latter is idiotic given the future ramifications but at least it follows some logic no matter how misguided.

The logic is the vaccine best equips you to avoid hospitalization or death.

Reading the article you cited should make you even more want to get the vaccine. If vaccinated people can transmit the virus in any significant way, the concept of “herd immunity” is irrelevant as vaccinated people may not be an effective barrier, and means the virus will eventually find you.

If the virus is eventually going to find you, you are best to pre-prepare you body to fight any infection by getting vaccinated.
