Dart and CBPL silent over potential sale
(CNS): Officials from the Dart Group have neither confirmed nor denied rumours that have emerged on social media that the islands’ largest property developer is buying the Cayman Brac Power and Light Company. In response to questions from CNS, a communications manager from Dart said they would not comment on any potential business deal.
“As one of the largest investors in the Cayman Islands, Dart is regularly approached with business opportunities. It is not our practice to comment on discussions,” the communication manager said in an email.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Tibbetts, the general manager of the small power company, also said he had no comment when asked about the sale.
The company was established in the 1950s as a cooperative between the people of the Sister Islands and is the exclusive power provider to residents and business on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
CBPL has a Facebook page but no website indicating its customer numbers, but and according to the limited information on the OfReg website, the company’s licence to provide power expired in 2018. There is almost no information publicly available about the company, though Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell, who is the representative for Cayman Brac West and Little Cayman, is the managing director and a major shareholder.

I don’t know which is more puzzling: that the Register of Interests hasn’t been updated since 2014; or that even back then, there were so many our of current MLAs falsely redacting their various holdings – and were still allowed to carry on in-office, and stand for re-election again in 2017, and again in 2021…

Rumour has it that Dart is interested in replacing the current diesel generation system with solar and wind technologies supplemented by state of the art battery storage. If that is the case then I am one Caymanian that is all for it.
DART is not an environmental philanthropy organization. As if to underscore how little they care, and about anything environmental, there is another “beach cleanup” scheduled this Saturday to spruce-up their private Barkers property portfolio. They have not dedicated this land for public use under the Registered Land Law, and are content to let the wooly-eyed public fantasize that these are natural state Crown-held lands. The fact is they aren’t anymore, and we need to be much more aware of what they own, and where – and compel them to hire the necessary estate managers, foremen, and crews, required to maintain their portfolio to the standard prescribed in the Law.
Are you daft? Dart is the man. He runs things like he wants,,,,,, because he either owns them or is buying them. Just keep in mind, though that he has no place for you in his businesses. Money and power are the only things that count. Ask anyone who has tried to deal with him. DART IS RUNNING THIS SHOW!
That’s actually the way it will go regardless of who owns it due to the fact that renewables have/are eclipsing dirty sources of energy.
Due to the size of Cayman Brac, solar and wind technologies will work there. I wish Dart the best of luck if that is their intention.
