Traveller pushes up COVID-19 positive rate
(CNS): Another asymptomatic traveller tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, officials confirmed Monday, pushing up the running total to 266 cases. The positive sample was one of 481 results revealed, Tuesday, carried out over the last day the rest of which were negative. There are now 15 active cases of the virus among 832 people in isolation and quarantine one of which is symptomatic.
The surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the US and the UK in particular is continuing to have a knock on impact on those coming into Cayman. Officials are still not stating however whether or not the majority of the recent spike in positive cases is among those at the beginning or end of their 14 day quarantine period or which countries they are arriving from.
Despite the slight spike in positive cases among those returning fro overseas however and the recent report of a breach of quarantine, the community currently remains COVID-19 free.
There have been no reported transmissions outside of travellers since the incident at Red Bay Primary in early October. Although counted as a community case there are still doubts that it was a true positive.

But the poor, socially compromised Caymanian can and WILL be sent to Northward prison for MONTHS for a simple spliff. XXXX This sickens me to the core and has only now set a precedent that any possible future breaches of the Law will only result in a $1,000 fine…..cause there is no rational or wiggle room hereafter to fine ANYONE a penny more.
World Mental Health Day was last month and it should be a reminder that we should not be too hard on those who post comments saying that Covid does not exist or that it is no worse than the flu or that it is good for you.
Some people just have a great deal of difficulty grasping reality and prefer to live in their own little world. As long as no one believes what they write they do little harm.
The couple that committed multiple breaches of quarantine ought to have their permission to stay in Cayman revoked and ought to be removed from the island. Hopefully their names will be communicated to the relevant Board so that this can be done.
Utterly ridiculous.
You’d love a military state wouldn’t you!
No, just a Covid free one. These people chose to intentionally placed lives and our economy at risk. Let them be damned.
No complaints from you when a local was imprisoned for 4 months back in April for breaching curfew?
Stop all international flights now, until next year when things settle down. No one wants another lock down, right ?
Stop all food shipments also. And any material needs. We don’t need it. We have coconuts and lots of turtle meat. No one wants to be dependent on the US.
CNS: Has the government, ie Alden or John John made any statement on the recent breach by the two Canadians and in particular the very low fine? Will there ever be another press conference or are they afraid to come before the people again?
CNS: 1) No. 2) I don’t know.
They let rich people walk all over them…
Money tells good bedtime stories. No self-respect or respect for locals all for a dolla!!
Criminals run free in Cayman, as long as you have enough greenbacks, no matter where they come from.
There is a reason why that couple keeps running from Canada.
You have to wonder if they will also breach quarantine when they return to Canada. Last time I heard, the fine over there was 750K and other countries actually enforce their laws. Wonder if CIG made Canadian Govt aware of their behavior.
I am Canadian, visitors and/or residents no longer have to quarantine upon arrival, you must be fully vaccinated and have a negative Covid test to come into Canada. It seems to be working as we really haven’t had a big increase in Covid cases since this was implemented earlier this month. Fully vaccinated people do get Covid but the cases are mild. My daughter had to quarantine when she arrived in the Caymans, it was hard but she knew it was mandatory, she followed the rules and was very happy when her quarantine ended. People should respect the rules of the countries they visit or stay home. When we had quarantine in place people did not take it seriously nor did the government.
Doctors urge the CDC to warn Americans that first COVID vaccine doses could leave them feeling unwell – to make sure they follow up for the second
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-8984187/Doctors-urge-CDC-warn-Americans-coronavirus-vaccine-effects.html
No problem. I won’t be taking it. If you have had the vaccine and are confident that it is all it is purported to be, then whether I take it or not should be of no concern to you.
This is not about health, it is about submission.
I do not submit.
All the precautions we have been taking over months and months are simply being laughed at and u done by an idiot somewhere who decides to allow flights in with positive covid cases, i said it before and got marked down but your family members will soon be sick and start dying and people at the top will start to say oh wait. Close the borders again we didn’t think it was so bad. Total lunacy.
Just open the borders so the people with underlying health issues ( and thats a lot here trust me) can get really sick and worse.
Which is why the French Canadian couple who brazenly broke quarantine, should have been jailed and deported.
They were fined $1000 only and allowed to go back to their condo….they could potentially have undone all our efforts to keep ourselves Covid free, and only a slap on the wrist.
Get real Judges and police.
Thank you. I could not agree more.
Cabinet can declare them Persona Non Grata and bar them from ever coming back, condo or no condo. Cabinet – we elected you to protect and represent us. Just sayin.
What are their names and where do they work? If they are capable of multiple offenses of this nature, I would like to avoid contact of any nature.
Talk about pushing our luck. Now that a vaccine is on the horizon our numpty health advisors can’t wait another month until its much safer? No, instead let’s just try our damned hardest to have another full lockdown for Christmas. Shut our front door and the back one too before its too late.
And we’ve just sent a stern warning to all HNW individuals to stay in quarantine or we’ll slap you with a measly pocket change fine. One of these quarantine jumpers is going to cook us and our Christmas goose!
This Vaccine you talk of may have an emergency use approval BUT that is not a full approval we could be years from competing testing and getting full approval.
No one can be made to take an experimental drug!
They can be made if govt makes it impossible to live life and have freedom without taking it. I fear thats exactly what the plan is when Moses says it will be “heavily promoted”
World wide I fear this as well.
The news from Bermuda over the weekend and today of Covid spreading into the community including 6 hospital employees shows the need for the introduction of day of departure testing and a full 14 days of quarantine after arrival. Bermuda’s attempt at a more lax system clearly does not work that well.
https://www.royalgazette.com/news/health/article/20201124/six-hospital-staff-test-positive-for-coronavirus/
Fortunately for Bermuda, the Bermuda Premier is now looking at more stringent measures.
https://www.caribbeannationalweekly.com/caribbean-breaking-news-featured/bermudas-premier-warns-of-tougher-restrictions-as-covid-19-cases-rise/
Where do you get your facts about introduction of day of departure test and 14 days?
They already have pre departure and multiple testing.
CDC today is advising 14 days is not deemed with testing on day 7 after posable exposure. England is going to 5 days with a test at the end to reduce down for 14.
I think that the point was that day of departure testing plus 14 days quarantine is what Cayman ought to be doing. Clearly what Bermuda is doing has not worked.
Other protocols may work in other places like the US and the UK where the virus is essentially out of control so a few hundred more cases per day from outside make no difference statistically.
Unfortunately most of the world is an expert and all they know is 14 days is the magic number, just like 6 ft away, etc, etc. And it’s all made up. Plucked from random decision making. There is no real evidence at all that 6ft separation is the gold standard, or that 14 days quarantine works any better than zero days. They made it up. That’s why the rules are different everywhere you go.
And now its coming out that even the lauded Dr Fauci knows and admits that asymptomatic people cannot spread a virus.
CNS: Dangerous BS. Most coronavirus cases spread from people with no symptoms, CDC says in new report
And yet here we are, locking them up all over the world. Its utter insanity what is happening to the people, and its because most of us simply dont understand, neglect to research, or simply accept. Fear. Fear. Fear.
The story of the boiling frog – that’s us. And if anyone needed any proof that what you’re being fed is nonsensical, just take a look at the global death rates over the past 50 years. You will find that statistically, this year isn’t even an outlier. The normal amount of people expected to die are actually dying.
Amazingly though, the flu death rate has all but collapsed. Incredible, huh?
CNS: CDC report (a little outdated now and done before the recent spike): Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19, by Age and Race and Ethnicity — United States, January 26–October 3, 2020
Thank you for your efforts to prevent ‘Truth Decay’ CNS
CNS keeps referring to excess deaths. Some statisticians are counting Covid deaths versus PROJECTED deaths. In 2019 there was no need to project Covid deaths! See the problem??? What would be honest would be to compare all types of deaths this year to actual deaths in prior years.
CNS: OK, let me try to explain. All governments will have statisticians (in the US an army of them in every single department) who not only collate data to tell them what happened but also use it to predict what is going to happen, because that is critical in planning how to administer the country.
So who died and why in previous years is used to predict who is going to die and why this year and next year, which is needed for all types of reasons. So each year, covid or no covid, there will be a projected number of deaths. However, statisticians will also look at anomalies. So, for example, if one year there was a sudden spike of 300,000 deaths over what is expected (or projected) – which they refer to as “excess deaths” – governments will want to understand why.
This year in the US there have so far been around 300,000 excess deaths (which many believe will be 400,000 by the end of the year), but the anomaly is known. This does not mean that anyone predicted a pandemic. Why is this important?
There are 50 states plus DC, with thousands of counties, cities, towns, etc, all of which might designate “covid death” slightly differently. You also have a sitting president trying desperately to pretend it’s a big nothing. So the “excess deaths” is a way to get a realistic look at the actual impact of the pandemic.
The excess death figure in the US (let’s stick there for now) is significant – a horribly bland word for 300,000 devastated families who watched their loved ones suffocate to death. People need to take this seriously.
US deaths:
2016 – 2,744,248
2017 – 2,813,503
2018 – 2,839,205
2019 – 2,908,941
2020 – ???? – Deaths with Covid-19 to date 259,000
CNS: You’ll have to explain the point you’re making. Because nearly 3 million people died in the US last year we shouldn’t worry about the additional quarter of a million who suffocated to death this year?
The point is CNS, you keep referring to excess deaths as factual. It’s too early to tell if covid deaths are in addition to other deaths. Other than Covid deaths being reported daily, it seems the technology doesn’t exist to report other deaths on a frequent basis. For Covid to cause 400,000 excess deaths, approximately 3,363,839 people have to die in the US this year. That’s a 16% increase. The norm is 2%.
CNS: Does this graph make it clearer? It’s from the CDC report.
Even the CDC site points out that the numbers and graphs are from mathematical equation to project/estimate deaths
CNS: The graph shows counted deaths compared to expected (projected) deaths. Preliminary counted deaths are continuous, though they are updated (usually upwards). Yes, mathematical equations are used to estimate expected deaths.
Upvote is for CNS’s response, of course.
CNS, you do an ok job but you’re very 1-sided on the Covid, just go listen to Fauci himself here please
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1orSO094uY
CNS: The 45 second video is out of context – maybe he is comparing this pandemic to past pandemics – but he has made clear on numerous occasions that covid is spread by asymptomatic carriers.
Fauci says asymptomatic cases driving “new phase” of coronavirus
Here’s what he said in June:
The World Health Organization’s remark that transmission of the coronavirus by people who never developed symptoms was rare, “was not correct,” White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday.
The WHO “walked that back because there’s no evidence to indicate that’s the case,” Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during an interview that aired on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
“In fact, the evidence we have given the percentage of people, which is about 25% [to] 45%, of the totality of infected people likely are without symptoms,” he said. “And we know from epidemiological studies that they can transmit to someone who is uninfected even when they are without symptoms.”
I was Asymptomatic, Never spread it to 6 people I live with and no precautions taken.
Go CNS!
Is that you Donald Trump?
6:45 – you’re a complete moron! Are you really that stupid or is this an act to troll?
They unfortunately listen to that lying ding Don
Nobody is suggesting that 14 days is not what is required. The CDC is NOT considering shortening the 14 day quarantine period note because the virus has suddenly changed but because too many people are not bothering to quarantine in the US. The CDC recognises that by shortening the 14 day period more Covid cases will get into the community. However, if more people comply with a 10 day quarantine rather than a 14 day quarantine then maybe there would be a net benefit.
Fortunately we do not seem to have the rate of non-compliance with quarantine that exists in the US, but that may change as more people from the US are let in.
Not true yesterday the CDC suggested shortening the 14 days But using a test and shortened isolation.
Yes it is true. The rational is not that 7 days or 10 days plus a test is just as good as 14 days. It is that people in the US are not complying with the 14 day quarantine requirement and the hope is that more people will comply with a less effective quarantine period.
Jennifer Nuzzo, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said she would welcome such a revision.
“Shortening quarantine recommendations to focus on the period of time during which the vast majority of people who are exposed to the virus are likely to become contagious is a smart, pragmatic move that is likely to boost compliance.”
“Right now, contact tracing efforts in the U.S. are severely hindered by deep disincentives for contacts of cases to quarantine,” Nuzzo said. “A seven or ten day quarantine recommendation may be easier for people to bear and hopefully may help get more contacts of cases to comply.”
We may not have the rate of non-compliance with quarantine as in the US, but that Canadian couple in WB have committed multiple infractions and jeopardised this community’s safety several times!
This couple got a slap on the wrist, but this selfish and lax attitude could very well extend to their jobs when they are let out of quarantine – I for one would not like to have them handle my food or dental hygiene or whatever it is they do here!
Bermuda having cases in the hospital and how does this tie into tourists visiting the island?
Bermuda’s cases are hospital employees. How many tourists visit the hospital while on holiday? This most likely has nothing to do with their tourism program.
