Minister ducks family curfew breach query

Health Minister Dwayne Seymour at Monday’s press briefing

(CNS): Health Minister Dwayne Seymour gave a bizarre response on Monday to a question from CNS about a possible breach of curfew at his family home but failed to answer the question. A video posted on social media over the weekend appeared to show his wife working out with a personal trainer, which was potentially in contravention of government’s shelter-in-place order to protect the community for COVID-19.

The Instagram post was picked up by Cayman Marl Road. Publisher Sandy Hill told CNS that, in addition to the fact that the trainer was wearing a mask, she was certain the footage was recent because the comment accompanying the post indicated that the workout happened this weekend, and because of other technical protocols relating to the social media platform as well as her own research.

As a result Hill opted to feature the incident in the site’s ‘Jackass of the Day’ slot, where people doing what might be considered stupid or dangerous things during the curfew are ‘named and shamed’.

The post was picked up on social media and shared extensively. People expressed outrage that the health minister’s own family was potentially breaching curfew and wanted to know if the post was accurate. If it was, the question arose as to why the trainer or the minister’s wife had not received a ticket like dozens of members of the public.

Consequently, after receiving dozens of requests from readers for the question to be put to the minister, Wendy Ledger, the CNS reporter who joins the press briefings via Zoom each day, asked the minister if he wanted to comment on the truth of the CMR report and the potential breach of curfew at his house.

However, the minister proceeded to suggest that Ledger was somehow “brave” or “stupid” to ask the question, adopting a deflecting tactic that increasing numbers of politicians around the world are doing when asked awkward questions by the media. But not satisfied with attempting to undermine or bully the journalist on this occasion, the minister went on to remind people of two well known Bible stories from Christmas and Easter that appeared to have no relevance to the question at hand.

When the minister asked Ledger if that answered her question she pointed out that it did not. He did not deny, however, that there may have been a breach of curfew at his home.

CNS has contacted the police to see if any tickets have been issued regarding the allegation and we are still awaiting a response. But in the meantime, the minister’s assertion that the question was stupid or silly appears to have struck a chord with the public.

In an explosion of messages and social media postings, the Cayman community is now demanding that the minister answer the question given the circumstances. Many people point to the minister’s own pleadings, often in an array of foreign languages at the daily briefings, for people to stay at home and follow social distancing protocols, and they want an explanation.

However, many people were also disturbed by his approach, the bizarre response, the refusal to answer the pertinent and reasonable question and the implications that the minister was refusing to be accountable.

“Getting bullied or berated by politicians is nothing new; it’s part of the job and certainly on the increase these days as a result of the way the president of the United States has opted to engage with the media there,” Ledger said in the wake of the incident, noting that it was a pertinent question about curfew breaching.

“But there are few ways to get a response from this minister in particular because since his appointment he has not answered a single inquiry from CNS,” she added.

Regular readers will recall many issues surrounding Seymour’s ministry in particular, and while on occasion we have been able to get a response to our questions from some of his civil servants, the minister continually opts not to respond to this media house.

It may be that on this occasion that there was no breach, if the trainer lives on site or is an exempted worker or the Seymour family has been given some other lawful permission for a trainer to visit the home. However, so far the minister has not offered any explanation about the allegation.

See the question by CNS and the minister’s response at Monday’s press briefing on CIGTV below:

The actions of the health ministers wife (if true) is totally in breach of the curfew laws and should be prosecuted!

The Minister himself should be removed from his position effective immediately no ifs and buts.

If there’s any questions of any sort of law being broken my the minister. Insulting the modesty of a women and threats the evidence is there already amd I’m sure that the police and public protection Office can bring a charge without a complaint.

To our Premier, this donkey (as he think he quoted himself, Im confused), this person has just destroyed all the hard work you have put in these last few weeks, I highly recommend that if you want your party to survive, remove him.

I would say I was disappointed in this minister but honestly I expected nothing less from him, he is an arrogant donkey (well that’s what I got from his reply).

Seymour insulted the modesty of a woman (criminal offence

Seymour clearly threatened Wendy (criminal offence)

Seymours wife breached the isolation laws (criminal offence)

Seymour cried a couple of weeks ago complaining about being picked on by the public (via a meme), that person was arrested.

It appears to me that government officials appear to believe they amd their families are above the law.

I would like to know how many of the politicians family members have essential letters and can travel any day of the week? I bet all of them.

Now that Seymour seems to say his wife can do what she wants does this mean all the tickets issued by the police under curfew are void?

Can a lawyer advise us if they could win this in court due to the apparent no investigation? Seymour is one of the house members that approved these laws. It would be interesting.

As for Wendy, thank you for asking the question. This issue has not gone away and I beleive you should ask the Premier his opinion and what actions are going to be taken against Seymours insubordination, comments and wife’s actions, you deserve a public apology from Seymour and Alden (actions of one of his cronies)

There are many political figures around the world who have breached their countries curfews, their leaders have sacked them and or forced resign.

Seymour should be removed from his post effective immediately!

    My rant is nearly over!

Seymour seems to believe he’s above the law and forgotten that he was voted in by the public and paid for by us. Whilst a large majority of us are not in work, not earning anything, our ministers are still being paided full salary (Seymour over $150,000 per year, plus benefits).

Some of our ministers are double dipping, getting full pensions and salary.

If one complaint is made from Seymour he is being pick on, he’s done it to himself, as far as I’m concerned he’s open game for memes now.

The incident referred to may not only be a breach of the laws relating to public health and curfew, but also quite probably the Trade and Business Laws (was the trainer licensed to do house calls?) and depending on who the trainer is may also be a breach of the immigration laws. Perhaps the ministers responsible (Hew and McLaughlin) could let us know?

    Good Afternoon All,

I trust this beautifull day finds you all doing well. We have so much to be thankfull for. I thank you Wendy for asking the question you did. And yes I myself would like an answer as to why the Minister’s wife is allowed to exercise with a personal trainer and the rest of us in this country has to go out on road for our 90 minutes of exercise or do it in our yards at home.
Stay safe and once again thank you for asking the tough questions no other news outlet won’t. You have always had my support and always will. Once again excellent news reporting. I once again call on our Premier to do the right thing and relieve the Minister Of Helath from his duties. In this time of national crisis we need elected members with experience not favours doing these critical job.

Calling the reporter “stupid” because “how dare she ask a question like that”, and then spiraling off about Jesus riding a donkey, as if that somehow explains what happened? Yes how dare she and the people seek an explanation as to why your wife is exempt from the same restrictions we live with.

“How silly”, no minister, how silly of YOU to be our health minister. How silly of you to berate us and preach to us about staying home yet your wife is exempt to this law. How silly.

What exactly does he bring to the table everyday?
The public have a right to question why his wife is apparently exempt from restrictions imposed for public health, and if she isn’t, then why the wife of the Health minister is ignoring the law that 99% of the islands are adhering to, and in doing so is placing a direct risk to the heath of the minister of health, the Premier and the Governor and indeed other lawmakers.
He should resign forthwith and wife/trainer should be prosecuted.

        Ag,

Being a good person has nothing to do with getting the job done. Surely. It’s a job, with specific duties outlined. It’s a big responsibility which requires a team of people behind the person doing it. This man does not have the right team and proves to be the wrong representative for the job.

It’s nothing personal, simply constructive criticism.

It’s best for any country to have the best representation at the helm. It’s equally important to elect persons who have the required education and experience to hold the post. Week after week we see a blatant display of incompetence and arrogance, exclusive of His Excellency the Governor.
Thank you to His Excellency, Mr. Roper for leading by example each and everyday; your gentle and humble approach is appreciated. I have also enjoyed your steel pan pieces and applaud you for your efforts in learning during your time with us!

Get him off this panel! I rerun it to watch it so I can skip his nonsense.

  14. Anonymous says:

So. Let me get this straight. Every blessed day, we have a panel of CIG officials (rightfully) pleading to the public to observe the mandated guidelines, restrictions and enforcements as dictated by those who have authority to do so – for our own and collective best interests.

Top of list, being that only a small section of the community is deemed “essential” and therefore everyone other service provider must cease and desist operations, to the detriment of their income and livelihood – for the greater good. Ok, fair enough.

Essential workers do not include certain sectors or industries that are necessary for the elderly or disabled or otherwise impaired. They also don’t include personal trainers – a farrrrrr less important and necessary field for the average person to make it through the day. On that we can all agree, yes?

Now, here we have a unique situation, where (allegedly) a sitting member of CIG (who also happens to be one of the everyday panel sitters pleading with the country to fall in line with the master plan to suck it up and wait it out) has a CLOSE family member who has (very foolishly) posted damaging evidence of breaches to the law on social media. I don’t know about you, but that infuriates me as there are a number of personal sacrifices i am making to ensure the health of my family, whereby what I deem as an essential service for the everyday care of certain members of my family is not considered as such by the powers that be.

    But wait, there’s more!

The MLA in question did not proactively choose to address the situation. AND, when the question came…we alllll knew it was coming… he chose to position himself as a jackass with the most LSD-induced response ever. I mean…. c’mon… is this man on drugs? He had 24 hours to get ahead of this story. Where is the government’s crisis management and PR team?? Would THIS not have been an important story to manage? He then proceeds to insult and degrade the journalist who posed the question THAT WE ALL WANT AN ANSWER TO!? She did it on behalf of the country, because WE are not invited to ask questions during the briefings…so we rely on the chosen few who have access.

So not only did he insult Wendy Ledger, he insulted us.

He wasn’t there. He may not even have known that his wife’s personal trainer was there with her (hey, it happened before with wife #1,,,#justsayin). But given his very manicured appearance and perfectly trimmed hairline, i am guessing she is not the only one breaching curfew these days – so he may have been aware…who knows. The point is – she outed herself and now we all know and HE needs to answer some serious questions!! He can’t deflect with asinine stories of old that go nowhere and serve no purpose in the conversation – he isn’t 5 yrs old!!! He’s an adult, an MLA, a MINISTER OF HEALTH! And his wife was acting against the rules that HE is partly responsible for setting!

Own that! Come out swinging. Give an honest and genuine response – a simple, “sorry, that was an error of judgement. It’s a personal matter, I am dealing with it! Won’t happen again”. Anything! But the path he took (as expected) was fueled by immaturity, cockiness and misguided self importance that will cost him dearly down the road.

WENDY, please continue to ask the question EVERY SINGLE DAY until someone gives a reasonable response. You should ask ALDEN and the GOVERNOR and the COMMISSIONER what is being done about it.

ALDEN, I expected better of you, sir. Rather than stick your head in the sand – or rather, the phone, pretending that you did not hear the discussion, YOU should have intercepted the question and given a professional answer that would give the public some sense of trust in the system and our leaders – rather than allow an imbecile to embarrass himself, you, the government and the country.

GOVERNOR, I am so sorry you had to witness the mentality of some you should view as intelligent and professional – but I trust that you are dealing with this matter privately.

COMMISSIONER, the public expects justice. This is a breach of curfew and shelter-in-place directives. The evidence is irrefutable. We expect a report on measures being taken to deal with it as you have very publicly handled other recent and circumstantial matters.

JON JON, shame on you for thinking you or anyone in your family is above the law – the onus is on you to uphold the law and your reaction and response suggests you do not feel that you should answer to anyone. Regardless of your involvement or lack thereof, people are looking to you as you sit on that panel and it is incumbent on you to deal with this situation – privately or otherwise – but do not insult us with your irritating references to ancient stories as if that will get you out of this. It was a despicable display of arrogance and ignorance.

CIG do better! You will have a revolt if you do not manage this one properly.

The Minister for Health should have been removed from the panel weeks ago. He is a constant source of embarrassment to Cayman and has made a fool of himself over and over again. Why do the Governor and the Premier allow him this platform? His response to a perfectly legitimate question from CNS was arrogant and bullying. It was interesting that not one of the other so-called journalists asked about the issue despite it being a major talking point of the weekend. Why? Are they that scared of him? His rambling parable about Joseph, Mary and Jesus was nonsensical. It is time the Premier thinks seriously about the composition of this panel and the make up of his cabinet. In other words Alden – It’s time to address the donkey in the room!

Imagine, for a second, if Matt Hancock, the UK’s Secretary of State for Health, had threatened Emily Maitlis or Kay Burley in response to a question he didn’t like during a live interview. His red briefcase and ministerial car would be given to someone else before the cameras had stopped rolling.

Time for a rethink, per the independent, international monitors’ report on the last general election here. Deepen the pool of eligible talent and see situations like this diminish. The fact that there is hard proof on video that this happened, and the HEALTH MINISTER couldn’t even be assed to come up with a half baked excuse, while sipping from a mug that says “stay at home” is just beautiful.

  33. Concerned Diver says:

The way Minister Seymour responded to this reasonable question was unacceptable. He comes across as bullying and then gives the oddest response, but definitely not an answer. It LOOKS like he was prepared for the question as he seemed to be referring to some notes, but any which way, he did NOT answer the question. His response equates to: “If I quote something to do with the Bible or Jesus, I am absolved of any responsibility.” If he didn’t have a reasonable response, he should have just said “no comment” or “I am not my wife’s keeper”, and certainly not berate and bully the journalist doing her job. The question was not stupid. It was absolutely valid. He has been sitting on those press briefings almost daily telling people to stay home and keep social distancing rules.

Last time I checked one caymanian cannot speak for all caymanians. Period.

If you think that you don’t have ignorant people from every nation you’re mistaken. Believe me, they exist….but in those countries those people are not ministers of cabinet. Fact.

We got a real live one here. Mama mia!

    • Anonymous says:

He definitely doesn’t represent me thank you very much! He makes us all look like fools. Im embarrassed by him and for him. They need to remove him from these briefings. He doesn’t add ANY value. He certainly doesn’t discuss any HEALTH related matters. For those that want to listen to his sermons, they can stay on at the end and listen so the rest of us can go back to work. Practice what you preach Minister.

At best, this “chosen by God” represented 37.96% of Bodden Town East as of early 2017. 25 postal and mobile plus 402 poll votes, edging-out Robert Anthony Bodden by 60 votes. The besting was likely attributable to Jon Jon’s PPM affiliation (and they would still loose majority government). Some of the other assorted LA occupants “won” their district by as little as 15 votes. This is another abject lesson in why all eligible need to: (a) register to vote, and (b) cast their democratic vote wisely.

He certainly plays the stupid card…maybe that’s a more accurate reflection of his voters and not him as to why he does that. Just so you know, you don’t maintain a billion dollar empire by being stupid.

Quite disappointing Mr. Seymour. All he had to do was admit that his wife acted irresponsibly, not to insult the presenter of a valid question.

Apparently some of our politicians are very thin-skinned when it comes to criticism (not unlike others elsewhere in the world). That comes with the territory as a public official, especially in a senior post. If you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen!

I’ve defended Mr. Seymour’s reading of inspirational scriptures and even his “explorations” in reaching out to our many language diversities, but I cannot support him in this action.

Despite the fact that Wendy Ledger is known to show a quasi-disrespectful approach to local public figures, I’m not sure that was her approach this time.

An apology to Ms. Ledger is justified.

I mostly agree with what you said. However please do not confuse Ms Ledger’s willingness to ask the hard questions that need to be asked in a brave and straight forward way with “quasi-disrespectful.” There is no comparison between the two. Yes you are 100% correct, MoH does owe her a public apology and not one full of excuses as other leaders in Cayman are wont to do.

The.minister should be ashamed of himself calling Wendy stupid, when we all can see who is the stupid one by his answer. I don’t think an intelligent person would give that kind of answer. He should not be on the panel for he never says anything that’s helps..I always turn off my TV when
he comes on rambling . We the people is calling on him to apologize to Wendy big time today, and a real apology. not some foolish parable .

This guy should be asked to resign immediately. He adds no value, and earlier in the discussion didn’t even know what garden waste was, until a school grade 1 explanation had to be provided to him. This is the same individual who was sobbing like a baby on national TV around 2 weeks ago, and now has the audacity to threaten the press. He’s a passenger in life, somebody needs to throw him off the bus. Love the fact he preached to us about healthy foods, staying fit etc when he’s 275-300lbs himself.

Absolutely outrageous! She may refer to herself as “the First Lady Seymour” but Seymour may be the only accurate part of that! That self adopted title would also suggest that he is some kind of first gentleman – clearly he is neither of those!

Either way Dwayne Seymour, the office you hold requires accountability and a reasoned response to a legitimate question is required! If you cannot or will not do that then you need to get your backside out of that office!

He is a complete disgrace. If he is allowed to attend the press briefing today the first thing out of his mouth better be an apology to Wendy specifically and the public generally and the first thing out of the COP’s mouth better be a statement that an investigation has been started.
