(CNS): A driver of a small Toyota car was trapped in the vehicle on Wednesday after being hit by an oncoming dump truck. The collision happened at around noon yesterday on Bodden Town Road in the Pease Bay area. The dump truck, which was travelling westbound towards George Town, collided with the small sedan heading in the opposite direction. Police believe the truck drifted into the wrong lane and into the path of the car.

Following the smash the driver of the sedan was trapped and had to be extricated by officers from the Cayman Islands Fire Service. However, his passenger was uninjured and able to escape the vehicle.

The injured man was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are now investigating the crash and Police Commissioner Derek Byrne issued a public appeal to everyone on the road to drive safely, especially those behind the wheels of dump trucks, which have caused considerable public concern.

It is futile to think inspection will do anything about the loud trucks. Two new quarry rock trucks with no mufflers and huge chrome straight exhaust pipes appeared on the island a few months ago and are extremely loud, especially with the drivers loving to use their engine brakes (Jacobs Engine Brake) for slowing down to almost a stop, where it is ineffective but loud, and during upshifting where it is actually not good for the engine and transmission, How did they ever pass inspection without mufflers? The brakes are set by responsible operators to not work below 35 miles an hour or on upshifts, that has to be intentionally disabled to make so much noise. I also agree drivers should be paid by the hour, not load. If you can’t trust them not to cheat, you shouldn’t employ them. Think of the famous Domino’s Pizza delivery lawsuit. Too much pressure to drive fast when paid by the load. Interestingly, a new CNHTC (made in China) dump truck showed up recently operated by one of the big outfits, and it is nearly silent. You can mostly only hear the low gears whine a bit as it starts off. No engine roar, no engine brake noise. It can be done!

How do the majority of these dump trucks pass inspection? Wheels wobble on nearly each truck I ever drive behind.

How about the Dump truck that the wheels fell off on April 7 2020 that was also probably a truck for airport job.
The police need to stop every dump truck and make sure that they are road worthy etc. because the trucks are all old and falling apart.

We really need to stop allowing truckers to be paid by the load.

What do you mean “dump” truck … was this a garbage truck or was it a truck carrying marl or such?

Start clamping down on these trucks if you care so much about people dying.

Dont you need to have a professional driver license for driving a dump truck? Air brake license and a license for over 5 ton? Start taking licenses from people abusing the privilege. Start doing some retesting annually. Do something.

Using compression release engine “Jacobs” brakes in the Cayman Islands is illegal, yet we can all hear these nuisance trucks racing around, and singing down through the gears going into every roundabout or brake point…even directly past the RCIPS police stations…and audible for miles. How do they not hear what we hear? Can it really be a mystery to the RCIPS where the quarries exist? How hard is it to police compliance along the routes leading to/from those few active pits? How many years of public complaints and appalling accidents do they need before they get around to doing their job?

100% agreed. It is a massive pet peeve for many of us, and I can’t believe that if we can hear these dreadful drivers revving their gears and using their engine breaks from miles away, that the police can’t hear them also. There have been occasions when I am inside Hurleys and can hear these trucks “slowing down” to get on the roundabout by using their engine breaks. I really wish this law was more enforced, especially now that the trucks are much more noticeable.

You don’t have to go to the quarries. Eastern Avenue. 30 a day at minimum running engine retarded brakes through there and honking at drivers when the trucks are clearly driving to quickly. The RCIPS have been called several times. No change.

If all these dump trucks are heading to the airport, as the Premier says,we will have enough fill to raise the runway higher than Mt Trashmore.

A license of some kind would be nice, but since they never appear to get stopped, who would be the wiser?

Why is a dump truck on the road? What essential business is a dump truck carrying out with all construction halted?

      Good question!

airport runway project is still being done

    • Anonymous says:

Don’t you know that Alden is still extending the airport runway and all the trucks on the road are doing Aldens work. He should be held responsible for that situation. While other land clearing etc that only takes one operator and one machine can not continue

Good question. I notice it wasn’t addressed here in the CNS article. Can’t remember if it was addressed in the press briefing the next day.

The Airport remediation project is still continuing! These should be the only dump trucks on the road.

All truck and buses/taxis should install tachometer by law which It will help the police to see if they are speeding or not.

The reason why these trucks drift into opposite travelling lanes is because they are going too damn fast, having to cut corners in order to stay on the road. The police are currently driving around at speed, not looking out for anything, least of all curfew breaches. Perhaps they could start doing their jobs and patrol at slower speeds, stop the increasing number of cars on the roads and crack down on these lethal and unroadworthy dump trucks.

Cayman has one of the highest numbers of police officers per capita on the planet. If RCIPS actually did their job, or wanted to, they would be able to pull over every dump truck driver for a traffic violation at least once a week. They are that bad…

shame. These trucks are so bad… Zero road courtesy and barely mechanically fit for the road.

Listen we all know how fast the dump trucks drive. They collect our trash once a week and they go up the road and after collecting they go as fast as possible back down. No care for children, pedestrians or cyclists. They are on a residential road so chances of any cops around are zero. If cops ever responded to my tip they would see. I guess they are too busy stopping island supply from bringing in chemicals for pools to be sanitized.

A fraction of the traffic on the roads and still we have accidents. People can’t drive for **** on this Island.

For some I feel like the emptier roads is an opportunity to drive more dangerously. So many vehicles speeding down quiet roads. This isn’t NASCAR you idiots!
