(CNS): As the full catastrophe of Hurricane Dorian becomes apparent in the Bahamas, 2,500 people have been registered as missing. However, the list of the missing has not yet been checked against government records of those still in shelters or who have been evacuated, according to National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) spokesman Carl Smith. The official number of dead is currently 50 but that number is expected to rise significantly.

More than 2,000 people are being housed in shelters across New Providence, including some in emergency tents around Nassau, the capital. But around 15,000 people are in need of shelter or food, according to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is refusing to grant temporary protected status to Bahamians affected by Hurricane Dorian, which is usually given to people who face extreme hardship if forced to return home, where their country has been devastated by armed conflict or natural disasters.

President Donal Trump said, “I don’t want to allow people that weren’t supposed to be in the Bahamas to go to the United States, including some very bad people and some very bad gang members and some very, very bad drug dealers. So we are going to be very, very strong on that,” Trump said.

Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan has said that people fleeing from the Bahamas without documents, such as a passport, will be reviewed on a “case-by-case” basis.

However, although many people have lost everything except the clothes they are wearing, Trump has said, “Everyone needs totally proper documentation because the Bahamas had some tremendous problems with people going to the Bahamas who weren’t supposed to be there.”

I hope that Caymanians and local officials are taking note of this. Now that the ‘America is great again’, we should not expect the sort of reception given our people 15 years ago if we find ourselves in need as we did post-Ivan. We, like the Bahamas, have enjoyed the privilege (yes, I accept it is a privilege) to enter the US with a passport and a clean police record in normal times.
Post-Ivan, we were able to send evacuees with merely passports, CAL airlifted people for days after.
In Trumps ‘great America’, the Bahamians are sadly finding that they are being asked to provide MORE documentation rather than less as this story from the Miami Herald highlights https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/immigration/article234982857.html.
And if you have a read of this story from yesterday, you’ll see how cruel the culture of Customs & Border Protection has become https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/immigration/article234933792.html. This 12yo child whose her parents were able to get to FL with the child’s godmother ended up in one of the detention facilities and the child’s mother is desperately trying to get her out in the 2 weeks that she’s been allowed into the US for.
    Disgraceful.

It’s so sad what my home country has become- full of mean, racist, bigots! We have Trump to thank for that. It makes my skin crawl reading his idiotic, heartless comments, generalizing all Bahamians as “very, very bad people, drug dealers and gang members”- that’s the same stereotype he uses for anyone trying to come to the US! Trump needs to gooooo, out of office! America is not supposed to be like this! My heart goes out to all of those people trying to pick up the pieces in the Bahamas, I’m so sorry my home country isn’t trying to help you gain shelter in such a difficult time!

It was so nice of cayman to open its borders and not require documents or work permits post Maria and Irma to those in need.

It is simple as the BAH Govt issuing Temp papers to those Bahamians in shelters, with family and friends in the USA. There begins the screening process, instead of the HARD HEART position of NO TPS.
