Theresa May resigns as prime minister

(CNS): British Prime Minister Theresa May, the leader of the Conservative party, has quit the job, as the country’s political scene implodes over Brexit. The UK’s second female leader will step down on 7 June, paving the way for a leadership battle the following week against the backdrop of deep political divisions in the Tory party over Brexit. Announcing her decision in an emotional statement outside 10 Downing Street, May said she had done her best to deliver Brexit and regretted that she had not been able to do so. She said it was a matter of “deep regret” that she had been unable to do so.

As she delivered what became a tearful resignation statement, she said had worked to honour the result of the EU referendum.

“I feel as certain today as I did three years ago that in a democracy, if you give people a choice you have a duty to implement what they decide. I have done my best to do that,” she said, adding that she had done everything she could to convince parliament to back her deal.

“Sadly, I have not been able to do so. I tried three times. I believe it was right to persevere, even when the odds against success seemed high. But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort,” she said.

“It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit. It will be for my successor to seek a way forward that honours the result of the referendum. To succeed, he or she will have to find consensus in Parliament where I have not. Such a consensus can only be reached if those on all sides of the debate are willing to compromise,” the departing PM said.

As she ended the speech outlining what she felt were her achievements, she said it had been “the honour of my life” to hold the job as the second “but certainly not the last” female prime minister.

The Conservative Party is now expected to begin the leadership campaign quickly. The names of nominated candidates will go to Julian Smith, the current Conservative chief whip.

If multiple names are put forward, a series of ballots will be held among MPs until just just two nominees remain. Those two nominees will then go to a wider ballot of the Conservative Party membership, with the winner becoming the new leader and, for the time being, prime minister.

The first candidate to declare his intention was Boris Johnson and he starts as the bookies’ favourite in what is very likely to be a very crowded race. Esther McVey, Rory Stewart and Jeremy Hunt have all declared their intentions to run but many more are expected to throw their hats in the ring over the next few days.

Apparently asking for a confirmatory referendum is a “betrayal of democracy”. Which really means they are scared of upsetting the loud angry minority who are still stupid enough to want to leave.

How about implementing the result of the first referendum – isn’t that what was promised? That’s democracy.

She wanted the job, she got it and then she fncked it up. No to a second referendum, yes to a general election – even if that means Corbyn. One thing is clear, Conservatives are rotten to the core.

2:03 Check the news – the 2nd referendum effectively took place last week and the Brexit party wiped the floor with the rest of them.

Odd point when the anti-Brexit parties polled 40% odd, much more than the lunatic fringe Brexit protest party.

Good bloody riddance. Perhaps she will have a life after politics campaigning for transgenders. Perhaps she can team up with that thug fron New Zealand?

Maybe you want to read a little bit of the things she has done before commenting. The original poster (11:32 a.m.) is correct. She was given a task to do and failed miserably at it – purposefully, many would argue.

Read between the lines. Do a little research and come back. Immediate ignorance is the sure sign of cognitive dissonance.
Take a deep breath, relax and slow down. You are not alone.

Oh, nasty comeback speaks volumes on you. I’d rather be ignorant to an issue (where I can learn from someone actually giving information) rather than be rude and have no information to add. Buck up buddy, you need a snickers.

Union Jack, which rock you was living under, Cayman Is. Does Not have self Government,, Bermuda has, but not Cayman and U K has said after Bermuda got it there will never be another. Only other way is to go independence and we don’t want that . Our passport is even printed in the U K now, Governor is head of police and civil service and even head ofthe fire service is English, for the first time in history, etc, etc.

8.09pm So who is responsible for drafting your laws, issuing work permits, running the Civil Service, Cayman Airways, the Port Authority, the Monetary Authority, WORC, the CIAA, the CAA, the NRA, the Education Dept, the DVLD etc, etc, .
Are you suggesting the Premier is a puppet along with all our MLA’s and they simply rubber stamp all the directions from the Governor as to how to run this country.
I am not living under any rock, on a rock maybe, but this country does run it’s own affairs for the most part. When you complain about Caymanian unemployment, poor education standards, lack of proper garbage collection, traffic jams, the cruise ship piers, the number of work permits, grants of permanent residence/status and so on, no doubt you in your own world of make believe will blame this all on the Governor.

Cayman can’t even borrow money unless U K gives the ok and like Turks and Caicos they and can come and take us over like they did them, if we was self governed they could not interfere with what goes on internal in the Cayman islands. So whats the Difference between Bermuda (that is self governed) and Cayman Is. Explain their Constitution and ours, thank you.

      • Anonymous says:

Only saying that UK should get their house in order first. you sound mad, but if UK was so great what are you doing here.

      • Anonymous says:

Union Jack. The U K won”t even let Cayman print own Passports now for the first time in History. Look up Bermuda self governed constitution and then Cayman, see if there is a difference or not. Hope you are right.

        • Anonymous says:

Firstly, all British-issued passports are printed in one place. All British Embassies used to be able to print passports, but cannot do so any longer. That was done for security reasons (i.e. to make forgery very difficult) and is nothing to do with Cayman and its status.

Secondly, Bermuda has exactly the same status as Cayman, in that they are both British Overseas Territories, both have a written Constitution, both have responsibility for their own internal affairs, operate their own local assembly and have a Governor as representative of HMQE (the same as Canada and Australia, for instance). The UK Government retains responsibility for foreign affairs, defence, internal security and the Police.

The only difference is that the Bermudians accept responsibility for their own affairs and consider themselves “self governing”, whereas certain elements of Caymanian society (though fortunately, by no means all) continually look for others to blame for their own failings, despite the fact that they operate under almost identical conditions and constraints.

Its ironic that in her resignation speech she talks about compromise not being a dirty word, yet that is exactly what she has failed to do over three years. The mess that is Brexit may not have been initiated by her, but make no mistake May has presided over the mess with ferocity.

1.27pm The Governor does not run this country, Cayman has self government and Caymanians are responsible for managing their own affairs except for defence and foreign policy, albeit that certain international protocols to which the UK are a signatory extend to the Cayman Islands.
Caymanians are always complaining about the way this country is run, for good reason, but don’t blame the U.K., blame yourselves.
