Local LGBTI activists weigh in on UK review

| 16/11/2018 | 101 Comments

Cayman News Service(CNS): Colours Cayman, a local NGO supporting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community, has submitted a written statement highlighting “the violation of LGBTI rights by the Cayman Islands Government” to the Foreign Affairs select committee that is currently reviewing Britain’s relationship with its territories. The activists are hoping the UK will step in to address the discrimination against the members of that community. Colours accused the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of poorly managing its responsibilities towards LGBTI people, who are “severely disfranchised”, they said.

In addition to the absence of marriage equality and the UK’s failure to force the local government’s hand on that, Colours stated in the submission that the FCO had ignored pleas for assistance in bringing about change.

“While Colours Cayman has petitioned for legal change to end the discrimination of persons on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity, both Cayman Islands Premier Alden McLaughlin and members of the opposition have stated publicly that they have no intention of addressing these issues,” the activists told the committee.

The activists also stated that they had directly petitioned the FCO to address the discrimination against LGBTI people back in September 2016, but to date they have still not received a response.

As part of the submission, Colours also consulted legal LGBTI expert the Dr Leonardo Javier Raznovich, who has supported the activists with a lengthy document outlining the legal problems in the territories, instances of politicians engaging in hate speech, the refusal by the local government to enact any legislation in support of LGBT rights and the UK’s failure to address the clear discrimination.

Sometimes this little country of ours really is shamefully backward and stupid.
God has nothing to do with your views, it’s just uneducated, petty prejudice.

Get over yourselves, and get your busybody noses out of other people’s bedrooms and marriages.

    Question(s);

This week at Camana Bay, there is a locally produced documentary on the impact the absence of fathers in our homes is having on our society.

How do these long-established and study-based realities fit into the modern world as envisioned by the “Equal Marriage” / “Love is Love” crowd?

Will same sex couples / families not experience the challenges of raising a child in the absence of balanced perspective, hormones, societal norms etc?
(Oops, I said “norms”. A thousand pardons.)

Or, are we deciding to shelve these issues as they are now deemed politically incorrect?

(I know of quite a few single mothers struggling to raise and control their sons who are DESPERATE for a male role model.
Not to suggest she is a failure, for she could be the greatest mother in the world. However, she will NEVER be a father to that boy and in this case, a father figure may be the missing piece.
Look around any western urban setting and we see absent adult males as a recurring reality as it concerns underage crime, gangs, delinquency, etc – Lancashire, England included.
I won’t even touch on the epidemic of FATHERLESS (not love-less, i.e. she may have a mother and a host of aunties, grandma, cousins etc.) young girls giving themselves away for cheap or nothing in their search for “love” and validation by men.
We know the story all too well.)

E.g. Lesbian parents rising a delinquent and aggressive son can never be categorised as a situation where the absence of strong, male leadership IN THE HOME can be considered as a potential cause?

    – Whodatis

*Before anyone replies, allow me to remind you that ALL OF US (regardless of background), be it currently or in our younger days, pin-pointed individuals / families / relatives etc whereby the absence of either parental and or gender role contributed to behavioural challenges and unfortunate ultimate circumstances.

(Personally, I am a great respecter of the unquantifiable but undeniable essence of MALE+FEMALE dynamism. As a man I am regularly left in awe of the perspective the women in my life provide – and vice versa. It is as if 2 halves of a complete unit.)

Said dynamism extends far beyond sex, “love”, and relationships.
I just wish some people would get out of their feelings, cease with the shaming tactics at every given opportunity and see the wider picture because – the conversation doesn’t end at the point where many believe it does.

My mother passed (rest in peace) when I was 3, my dad raised me without a mother in the home and I turned out fine.

My coworker is infertile and she adopted a boy and a girl when they were born because their biological parents were deemed unfit for parenthood. They are now 12 and 15, both are excelling in school. She did great with them.

Any child would prefer a home over being stuck in an orphanage.

Let us not disregard that 99% of homosexual couples opt not to adopt. I think if they really wanted kids they would’ve been straight, no?

It actually doesn’t matter what you want personally. The fact is that there are Caymanians who are gay. If the law makes provisions for a heterosexual union to be recognised, then it must also make provisions for a homosexual union to be recognised. Its really just that simple.

Good Day to all The Cayman Islands. I wonder if you all realize how selfish you all sound by continuing to spread your HATE, DISCRIMINATION, STIGMA against your own CAYMANIAN LGBT CAYMANIANS. DO any of you have any idea how many MARRIED CAYMANIAN MEN I HAVE SEEN DANCING, DRINKING, IN THE GAY BARS IN FLORIDA. Many of you have no idea. Yet you ALL CONTINUE TO HATE, DISCRIMINATE and believe THE CAYMAN ISLANDS HAVE NO LGBT BORN CAYMANIANS and are above the LAWS. Some of these very same MARRIED CAYMANIAN MEN walking around in our country sit in the highest jobs in our little piece of PARADISE. THE LA, yes that is CORRECT. Yet the so called God fearing church going money making hipcrots singing, in many of the churches are they SAME ONES WHO SPREAD HATE, DISCRIMINATION, STIGMA TOWARDS US GAY CAYMANIANS.

Take a moment and realize, that none of you have the right to judge anyone. Do me a favour and realize this. In God’s eyes WE ARE ALL CREATED EQUAL. YES THAT IS CORRECT. When you call US GAY CAYMANIANS NAMES, and CONTINUE TO SPREAD YOUR HATE, DISCRIMINATION, STIGMA. And YES, none of you KNOW WHAT YOUR CHILDREN WILL GROW UP TO BECOME. THE ANSWER, NOTHING, NOTHING. THE NAU CONTINUES TO DOWN RIGHT REFUSE THOSE OF US THAT ARE IN NEED OF. FOOD, PROPER HOUSING, MEDICAL. THE PAST AND PRESENT GOVERNMENTS have done NOTHING. Dear Chet,

      XXXXX

As for NAU, I have a 20 year old, straight, single, female cousin that criticises them in a similar way – but without any suggestion of their failings being based on her sexual orientation.

All of my gay relatives and friends get along as fine as the rest of us here on this little rock.

As for societal pushback, I will agree, that you have experienced this as I witnessed it personally (some 20 years ago).
However, in that same environment, there were Hispanic / Latin / Spanish women also being discriminated against due to what they were.
      Did you also notice that?

At the end of the day, Cayman does not treat its gay community like lepers as you are implying.

Please read the except below, published in The Week, (2007).
You will note that despite your protests and blind obedience to bigoted laws, marriage itself has evolved and along with it the rights of women to be seen as legitimate citizens with human rights.
So the question you must ask is why can’t evolve further?

‘Marriage’s primary purpose was to bind women to men, and thus guarantee that a man’s children were truly his biological heirs. Through marriage, a woman became a man’s property. In the betrothal ceremony of ancient Greece, a father would hand over his daughter with these words: “I pledge my daughter for the purpose of producing legitimate offspring.” Among the ancient Hebrews, men were free to take several wives; married Greeks and Romans were free to satisfy their sexual urges with concubines, prostitutes, and even teenage male lovers, while their wives were required to stay home and tend to the household. If wives failed to produce offspring, their husbands could give them back and marry someone else.’
‘As the Roman Catholic Church became a powerful institution in Europe, the blessings of a priest became a necessary step for a marriage to be legally recognized. By the eighth century, marriage was widely accepted in the Catholic church as a sacrament, or a ceremony to bestow God’s grace. At the Council of Trent in 1563, the sacramental nature of marriage was written into canon law.’

Caymanians like to quote their ‘laws’ when if suits there narrow view of the world. However, they have an appalling record of domestic abuse, infidelity and under age/single parent pregnancy amongst their small population, yet still like to quote the sanctity of traditional marriage.

Letting an adult love another adult regardless of gender will not force you or your kids to become gay.

You are not the victim here simply because your religious beliefs don’t align with it.

You have no right to tell them they can’t be gay simply because you don’t agree with it, religious or not.

The concept of marriage is older than your religion.

Their civil union / marriage will not negatively affect your life, family or the value of your marriage in any way.

Prohibiting gay marriage because they won’t have kids is a very stupid argument. I’m married and we don’t want kids.

Not allowing civil unions between gay people does nothing to stop people from being gay.

Our constitution allows freedom from religion – you have no right to force your indoctrinated lifestyle down other Caymanian’s throats.

It wasn’t hijacked. Homophobes like you turned it into negative slang.

            Well, that’s a doozie. Well done. 😀

The meanings of words change over time. Read Shakespeare for details. Heard of him? Use words with their past meanings all you want, it is just that your can communication will be less effective.

You have your opinion. I have mine. Leave it at that. If you want gay marriage, then vote for it. Stop forcing, you are hurting me.

Without any reference to any holy book, please also respect the constitional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman and stop trying to force a gay agenda down peoples throats. If you truly believed what you are spouting you would be trying to get ALL countries to re-define marriage.

Except that prior to Jesus, multiple wives were commonplace, and within Christianity the need for marriage to be blessed by the Church wasn’t until the 16th Century, so “God’s definition” seems a little more flexible if you ask me

What an extremely weak argument back. Can your God meet with the law witters and straighten this out himself or did he bless mankind with science to come to logical conclusions?

Spread love, not hate. You’re a part of the resistance to a peaceful future.

The definition in the constitution was driven by those pushing the extremist religious agenda. So stop trying to be cute.

Total rubbish, it was the accepted norm of society, so stop trying to imply religion just to satisfy your agenda. Just accept the constitution for what it is.

Constitutions change. And anyway Cayman’s is subject to higher legal norms with which the nation has to comply.

Constitutions change when lunatics run the asylum and the press co-conspires.
Just because a “press” outlet printed it, doesn’t mean it’s truth.
It used to be that way, but now we have agenda driven despots who want everyone to see the world through their eyes.
Deceivers. No more, no less. Their day will come.
One day, they will all face the Creator and their arrogance will evaporate in the face of pure Truth.
I would just say, prepare for that day. It will come to us all.

Just because people who thought that the sun orbited the earth wrote it 2000 years ago doesn’t mean it’s true either.

Bacteria was only discovered around a century ago. We were dumb back then.

Read the constitution again …it does not prohibit civil partnerships and the court will most like require CIG to pass civil partnership laws.

Your ignorance knows no bounds does it? Marriage doesn’t mean the same universally, otherwise polygamy wouldn’t exist nor would under age marriage or arranged marriages.
The Roman Emperor Nero married two men in succession, long before the church got its hooks into their blind followers.
So before you spout historically and geographic nonsense about a human, not religiously motivated constitution that has taken many forms to many different peoples over millennia, do your homework.

        • History Lesson says:

After Nero performed the first ever recorded marriage in latin history, the MORAL voice from Jews and Christians got on his nerve. A fire broke out in Rome, and that was used as an excuse to murder thousands of God-believers! Historical fact!

Is history repeating itself? Will those who believe in a “universal morality” be targetted by corrupt gay supporters or elites? We will see. Time will tell.

I am confused, did you mean to say the first “gay” marriage.
We know already that the children of the devil will attempt to behead all of God’s children, it’s in the book. They are not far away right now.
Cannot say I am happy about this, but when the time comes, I will be fine, thanks to God.
