CAL sees delays over software crash
(CNS): The Cayman Airways flight operations team at the airline’s headquarters resorted to manually-producing flight plans for its scheduled aircraft Thursday morning as a result of an outage at its US-based flight planning software provider, Jeppesen. CAL officials said the Jeppesen servers were down from around 7am until 10:30, directly delaying Cayman Airways flights operating between Grand Cayman and Kingston and New York. The operations team generated the manual plans in an effort to limit the delays until the Jeppesen servers were working again.
All other flights were expected to operate on schedule throughout the day.
Hello 6 50. You can take your unfriendly airline and send it to where the sun don’t shine.
They are smelly, bathrooms never work. Same boring drinks. Nothing to eat and never on time.
None of the stewards or stewardesses smile any more. Attituded up like American teens!!
Never taking this plane!!!
CAYMAN AIRWAYS has been and will always be my preferred choice
Just wait until an aircraft goes mechanical at DEN that will be fun to sort out.
Same day, different excuse.
11:00 pm?
Cayman Air must be run by Millinneals!!! Everything they do seems inefficient and not professional.
This airline is always late and not dependable!!!!!
Get your act together Cayman Air or have other airlines pick up the business.
Oh no. You are all too proud to admit that this is a loser business because you are Govt subsidized!!!
Frustrating!!!!
cayman airways….3 star quality for 5 star price.
boycott them when you can.
Just save money by having the planes go between close islands. Cuba, the Brac, Jamaica.
Have any and all airlines come on in and bring as many visitors as possible.
They will spend money and help the economy here on GCM and the Sister Islands. Yes the sister islands are a part of us and we all should work together.
Cuba offers nothing to Cayman except…..
12 13 now did you mean sleazy women and assorted low class rooms with women to rent as in the W word? Cuba is not for classy people. It has always been a trashy horrible place.
I thought delays were normal.
Did AA leave on time this morning? What about KX102? Did it leave on time??? A quick look at Flightaware.com for Thursday Sept 6th reveals that both of these early morning flights departed relatively on time..SO CAL, can we get a realistic answer as to why ONLY these 2 flights that were quoted were delayed. Jeppensen is a worldwide company, I am sure if it was a glitch in their software that aviation today would have been a total mess.
Lol, they’re a world wide company but not every Airline use them. In fact, many US airliners use Sabre for dispatch. If you read the article, it was the early flights most affected; and shortly after a plan was established to continue manual dispatch, and some delays trickling through the evening (due to the delayed morning planes). Not a hard concept to grasp.
Not every operator uses Jeppesen for their flight planning services. Thought you would know that Global Express Captain.
This is an unlikely story. Jeppessen are a major player and more than one airline would be affected. Come on KX tell the truth.
Many airlines that utilize the Jeppsen flight plan service were affected (they have a plethora of products that weren’t however). Feel free to check their recent status feeds regarding server up time for yourself. 🙂
Did you? Or are you using a word spin?
Yep, checked the jeppessen site. No reported outages
Yeah, not likely pal. Recent reported events page in the support panel.
Wrong again. Nothing there
Aren’t CAL’s flight plans all “canned”? A term used when the Dispatchers use a routing that is “canned” in the system. Basically meaning choose canned plan A or B for any given day. The route changes very little if not at all because of airspace regulations. The weather can change and the weights however Dispatch rules and regulations dictate those also. It wouldn’t take 10 mins to do all that’s necessary to dispatch a CAL flight on any given day.
I’m guessing you’re not a licensed dispatcher. Routes don’t need to be “canned” (some are yes) but it wouldn’t be completely practical to use the exact same route through a severe thunderstorm, hail, icing, and other reported hazardous conditions.
Not only that, the route is an important part but also being able to calculate what’s needed as per company and CIAA policy (planned landing gross, trip fuel, total burn off, etc).
I’m not sure if you understand how flight plan software works, but when the servers fail (like Jeppesens did) you’re completely unable to pull a flight plan, file a flight plan, or even utilize their NOTAM/Wx features. Granted Jep should have much better fail-over capability than they do, it’s the way it is.
But, you knew all of that anyway.
6.05pm I agree. It stretches the limits of credibility that a system problem would only affect one airline, and for certain there’s been no news of other airlines affected.
Perhaps CAL can evidence this as surely Jeppessen would have apologised in writing.
Is this the same Aircraft as the JFK to GCM flight 3 weeks ago when none of the toilets flushed due to a malfunction?
*Water was shut off to all toilets. The Pilot informed us we may need to stop in Atlanta or Orlando. The flight continued, manually adding water to the tanks was needed.
I paid $904 for that flight. I was not happy.
Not sure where you’re getting at here, seeing as it was not an aircraft issue. The issue was within the flight planning software used to dispatch aircraft.
. . . Aircraft issues amongst numerous issues.
Have you taken their international flights such as to JFK?
Disrespect of passengers to have them sit on the aircraft because a gate is never open at JFK upon arrival. NEVER. Is that the norm at all their destinations?
I prefer to not be treated as cattle.
p.s. I fly that route a couple of times a year, have done so for 25 years.
The Flight Attendants are delightful ~ a relaxing flight, certainly they make it to be.
For first time tourists it seems appealing until returning to JFK ( are their other destinations the same?) People do speak their minds as they patiently or unpatiently wait onboard to disembark.
Well you got rip off with cayman air airways as I just book flight to JFK with Jet blue and it is only $410 return!
Jet Blue is less expensive.
Jet Blue is on time.
Jet Blue has a bigger fleet/modern.
Jet Blue does not ‘break down’ causing delays.
Jet Blue has a gate available upon arriving at JFK (no waiting 30+ minutes for a gate).
Jet Blue has WiFi.
Jet Blue is Direct, too.
$410 RT?
Lucky you and WiFi onboard, too!
And Jet Blue always has an available gate upon arrival!
