Men not worth fighting over, judge advises

(CNS): Justice Carlisle Greaves told a defendant that men are like buses, “one goes, another one comes”, and advised her that they are not worth women fighting over as he handed down a 12-month sentence for the conviction for wounding. Amil Regina Cotes-Incinosa (40) from West Bay was charged with stabbing Darla Ebanks twice in one evening because she believed her victim not only had desires on Cotes-Incinosa’s husband but was harassing him for cash.

The two women who knew each other had met on Birch Tree Hill Road on 16 February, where they first began arguing and Incinosa attacked Ebanks with a knife. Ebanks ran away and went home, where, having sustained a cut to her head, she changed her clothes and then set off for the police station. but on the way she encountered Cotes-Incinosa for a second time and was attacked again. This time she raised her arm in defence and was stabbed in the hand.

She then fled and flagged down a police car. She explained what had happened to the police officer, who called for an ambulance. Cotes-Incinosa was then arrested. Shortly afterwards she admitted the crime and was charged.

The court heard that Cotes-Incinosa had a previous conviction for wounding and one for assault.

After the court heard the details of the crime and the challenges Cotes-Incinosa has battling alcohol misuse, she told the judge she was deeply sorry for what she had done. She asked the judge for mercy for her children, if not for her, and a chance to break the cycle and get treatment for her alcoholism so that she could be a better mother.

As the judge handed down his ruling, he said he was puzzled why women who complain of the treatment they receive at the hand of violent men want to fight among themselves. “It puzzles me how one woman can attack another so violently over a man,” he said, because no man was worth fighting over.

He told her there were two things not worth fighting over — buses and men — because in both case, when “one goes another one comes”.

He said it seemed that if she had an issue with her husband, she should have gone to him, though not violently. He also said if her husband had an issue about harassment from the victim, he should have been man enough to talk with her about that.

He pointed out that as she was now in jail, as Cotes-Incinosa had been remanded earlier this year, her husband was now free to do as he pleases.

“When the cat is away, the mice will play, and now he is free to play with whoever he chooses while you will are in jail,” he said. “I hope you learn a lesson from this.” He added that she needed some guidance and help but feared that she would be back before the courts in future.

The judge said that, given all of the circumstances of the case and what fortunately turned out to be minor wounds to the victim’s head and hands, in consideration of the sentencing guidelines along with the woman’s early plea, he handed down a year-long sentence and a six-month concurrent sentence for the possession of the knife.

Any woman who argues, fights and worse, wounds another woman, over a man has no respect for herself and just makes herself look like a damn fool.

Men will be men, if your husband/boyfriend/partner is cheating, your issue is with him, NOT the other woman!.

I am sure the other woman didnt put a gun to his head to cheat with her.

Surely, depends on the man and who you have to fight with. Basic risk/reward stuff.

    Dear CNS,

This article was a very disturbing read to emanate from the court system.

The dehumanizing comments uttered by this member of the Judiciary, is wholly unreasonable, and requires his prompt removal from the bench.

It would be considered unconscionable for a judge to belittle ALL WOMEN by referring them to inanimate objects that come and go, while simultaneously belittling their individual human traits. The judge is member of a body that is required by their vary role to be impartial to matters of gender, race, economic standing, etc. A Judge that refers men to vehicles to be used, and ridiculing 1/2 of the Cayman population is outrageous.

These insensitive comments by the judge carry significant weight:

    – to any young boy or young man reading his comment, they paint a picture that they are nothing more than tools. Worthless of human compassion and empathy.

    – to any Father that would find themselves before this judge, it is doubtful that you will be treated as anything more than a #.

    – to any potential man that would ever find himself before this judge, these comments leave the impression that he will be treated inhumanely. After all, he’s nothing more than a bus to be used and left.

    – to every Mother of a son, the very disdain this judge has shown for your sons should be a wake up call of the gynocentric nature of society, where a judge can publicly humiliate you boys, and not think twice about it. How can your son ever expect to be fairly treated by teachers, police, employers, if judges are running around publicly dehumanizing them?

    – to every man that is a paramedic, firefighter, police officer, you are nothing more than a #, and according to this judge are not worthy of being considered human.

    – to every man that works hard to keep our power on, our roads fixed, our buildings safe, our a/c running, plumbing operational, you are nothing but a mere tool to be used and discarded.

This judges comments are a stark reminder that slavery has never truly ended. Several hundred years ago, slaves were treated as numbers. When a slave had lost their usefulness, they were quickly put out of their misery, and “like buses, another took their place”. They were treated no different than cattle and work horses. Just another #.

It’s a shame, that with all of the progress made for women, that it has resulted in such regressive behaviour towards men, by supposedly distinguished members of the community such as sitting court judges.

As members of the Cayman Community, we humbly call for His Excellency the Governor and the Hon. Chief Justice to immediately remove this judge from the bench, and to institute gender and sensitivity training for all judges, police officers and civil servants on the pitfalls of gynocentric values.

You sounds very hurt over having a good Judge in the court house ,and try leaving political insensitivity somewhere else . There’s no programs in the prison to help this lady that fights over one man , and believe that there’s only one man why she did what she did . When the husband or wife are not FAITHFUL to one another, try talking first , then if that’s good, then try moving on to the next man or woman if that’s your need and problem.

The kind of men that would want a woman like this is not worth fighting for. Obviously most if not all the rest are worth fighting for. If you don’t know this then you are the kind he is talking about. Have some self respect.

I think he’s a good Judge and councilor at the same time . Just like being a good father , when your kid do something wrong, you tell the kid that it was wrong, and you tell him why it’s wrong to have done that .

No, the world needs fewer men like those he is talking about. I am in no way like a bus and am a dedicated father and husband. That should be the normal – and I have a problem with any judge who normalizes and suggests there is nothing amiss in men acting like busses.
