Bike accident, 9 April 2017

(CNS): Police want to speak with the riders believed to be with a Bodden Town man involved in a serious motorbike smash in East End Sunday, as they piece together what caused the collision that landed the 30-year-old man in hospital. Police and emergency services arrived at the scene on Seaview Road just after 4pm yesterday and found the injured rider lying in the road. He was taken to hospital suffering from serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police said his motorbike was not at the scene, as it is understood it was taken away by his fellow riders. Mobile video footage taken in the immediate wake of the crash, which was posted on social media, shows at least two other riders with the man as he lay in the road.

Police are concerned that the group may have been “engaging in dangerous driving” and are urging the other riders to come forward and bring the injured man’s bike to any police station.

“This incident highlights the very concerns we have raised before about dangerous riding on public roads, which puts everyone at risk,” said Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne. “This incident will be fully investigated and we are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.”

Anyone with information, including further video clips, is asked to call the Traffic Management Unit at 649-6254. Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS via the Confidential Tip Line 949-7777, via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

One of these unlicensed motorcycles ran into the back of my truck near the lighted crosswalk in Camana Bay a few weeks ago. He tried to blame me for him hitting me from behind. I told him I wouldn’t be the one arrested for having an unlicensed, uninsured motorcycle on a public road when the police arrived. I guess that scared him because while I was on the phone with 911 the punk picked up the bike and left the scene of the accident. I waited for the police for 20 minutes and when they didn’t show up I went home as there was no damage to my vehicle. To this day no one has contacted me about it and I doubt the police went to Camana Bay security to get footage of the accident. There are plenty of cameras there so I am sure it was captured on at least one of them.

    I will say it again:
    Hold these persons responsible.
But do not forget that most of these illegal bikes are being ridden by under age children.

Hence whiile holding these kids the RCIPS must also investigate the parents of these kids. Charge them as well with something. Hold them responsible for their childrens behaviour.

Most of these kids keep these illegal/stoken bikes at their parents house. These same parents have a responablity under law to keep their kids from committing these crimes. They know their kids are riding these illegal/stolen bikes.

    Do something.

Belligerent street racing and lawlessness clearly is not a noble hobby of fellowship (as evidenced by these “friends” that left their helpless victim to perish in the road), it is an anti-community menace that will end in deaths or prison for many (who seemingly have little to live for). These riders share a contempt for our laws and indulge their selfish and dangerous whims just the same as drug dealers, rapists, wife beaters, armed felons, and turtle and conch poachers. It is exactly the same textbook corrosive mentality. It’s a product of young men raised by single moms/grandparents and abusive estranged deadbeat dads. “The world owes them, and they are coming to collect”. It is a coming-of-age hormonal longing for acceptance and recognition, and it plagues our weak-minded young men, just as it does elsewhere in the world. We need to understand what this social problem is, and how it came to be, before we leap to its defense, or call for decapitations, as one frustrated maniac suggested. More RCIPS community awareness would be helpful (as it is an existent and threatening problem), as would intelligent (higher priority) social spending on support for our many MANY broken homes, and birth control to avoid unwanted pregnancies in the future.

It absolutely irks me to see people commenting that government needs to provide a safe place for these boys to ride. Why is that governments responsibility? I’ve heard the boys say on multiple occasions that they brought in bikes and paid their appropriate fees to government to do so, so government needs to provide the land space for them to ride the bikes that they allowed them to bring in. That makes about as much sense as me saying that I brought in a sofa so government needs to provide me with a house to put it in.

If the “bike life” is such a passion for them and it’s all about “unity” and “guns down, bikes up” then why don’t these young men accept some responsibility and come together, raise funds and purchase private land for them to continue to ride in a safe manner. One that isn’t endangering the lives of innocent people on the road and then maybe the rest of the public would be more supportive of what you’re doing, and we could take your “bike life” serious.

I was almost struck by these bikers while crossing the road. They were travelling at unbelievable speeds through a residential neighbourhood on a Sunday. I’ve been tempted to string a good thick wire across the road when I hear these idiots coming every Sunday. I’d like to decapitate them all and bring us all some peace and quiet. Or maybe a nice big oil spill on the road in front of my house would take care of a lot of them. It’s not like these people are upstanding law-abiding members of our community who would be missed.

I even supplied more than 20 images to the police by email of the illegal bikes, their riders with full faces shown, and their full names to identify them. In the images I sent, many were doing wheelies down the road. I didn’t even get a reply.
It’s about time we built another prison, doubled the police force, got tough on crime and criminals and cleaned up this place.

Point is illegal bikes are bad and dumb but what about illegal drivers? Who can kill your whole family in one crash? If people were really upset of the ‘driving” there would a lot more car centered hate but instead motorcycles=satanism in caymam it seems Anyways rant over

If he had sustained serious neck damage, that could have crippled him for life, or even killed him! NEVER REMOVE AN INJURED BIKERS HELMET, NEVER MOVE THEM OR THEIR HEAD. JUST DO NOT EVEN TOUCH THEM. THAT IS WHAT PARAMEDICS ARE TRAINED TO DO TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE. TALK TO THEM AND REASSURE THEM, BUT NEVER MOVE THEM. Honestly, that moving of his head could have been fatal. Please Cayman, remember what I have just said. It is a serious matter. Stupid is stupid, but no need to make it worse.

First of all, police need to put all this attention to fighting real crime what about drugs and guns out the, wasn’t it the night before a armor truck was robbed and a security officer shot. Secondly, if the government would focus of the young men on this island and provide safe places for them to express their passion and sport then they would not be on the roads, and yes, in other countries even those that are neighbours to us supports bike riding and yes it is considered a sport! That’s what is wrong with Cayman always focusing on the wrong things and that’s why we are drowning. Everyone of you that’s commenting wishing bad on any of these young men that ride to express their passion instead of stealing and selling drugs on the corner, SHAME on you, I pray your kids / grandkids dont dare pick up a hobby and express their passion and someone wishes death on them. Why is government always blamed for everything? Private sector and investors are viable funding options to create a safe environment to practice riding, performing stunts etc.

And FYI, a quick Google search indicates that the UK nor the USA goverments own race track,so why exactly should we as tax payers foot the bill? Its about time we as a society should begin limiting government liability and exposure. If all else fails try crows funding.

I think is quite common knowledge that leaving small crimes alone will only lead to bigger crimes further down the road as these young guys have no respect for the law.

Also, we shouldn’t have to choose what law is enforced and which isn’t, the traffic dept. can focus on these guys and all the other road related issues, while investigators look at the robbery. It is not a or b, it is do what police do and do both.

Really?!?!? Folks the reckless riding is dangerous and annoying to say the least. But are we seriously going to ‘da wa you get’ people when they get injured. Is that where we have reached as a people, wishing bad on eachother even to this point! And when riders read these type of posts do you think it encourages them to ride in a safer manner. It never ceases to amaze me how many ways we find to divide ourselves. I want our riders to be encouraged to ride safely. And having buried a few myself, I hope that any riders reading this understand that at the end of the day most of us just want to ensufe that our young people are able to enjoy long and healthy lives. I understand why they want to learn to do the tricks that they practice on the roads. I get the exhileration. It’s dangerous and it can take your life away. But what’s just as bad is that you could take someone else’s life away too. Ride safe brothers and sisters.

No one is wishing bad on anyone. this is merely a matter of “If you can’t hear, your @$$ will feel”

At the end of the day it is more so the riders responsibility to ride safe than the bystanders responsibility to clear a safe path while a rider does as the please.

What is anyone supposed to do when a bike is coming down the road, swerving through lanes on one wheel at 50+ miles per hour, or riding at night with 0 lighting? (just to name a few scenarios)

Losing close friends to accidents does suck but if you can show me any one of them who was not riding recklessly in any way and somehow met their unfortunate demise then I will feel sympathetic. Other wise I just see it as them collecting their Darwin awards.

its not necessary to find out where or who has the bike. As someone who was there said, the police didn’t show up for a good while, so why are they so concerned now? The concern should be if the man is okay. What difference does it make or need to be investigated oh so deeply. There are much more important things to be be “investigating” so how about we focus on those things and just pray for the man who was injured. I’m pretty sure it was his own fault why he fell off the bike, and he’s dealing with that now. This coming from someone who does not condone the bikes on the road. But this seems very unnecessary to me.

Not the mention the other stuff I report, waste of time… you see the same vehicles on the road, unlicensed, unroadworthy, lights not working, bald tyres, just to name a few. Police do nothing. I can remember the days when just fog lights could get you pulled over. I used to be very proud of the RCIP, now they just seem useless. Driving on Cayman roads nowadays is like driving in a Third World country.
