(CNS): A 35-year-old man from Cayman Brac who works as a customs officer has been arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and is currently in police custody. Police said the man was arrested on Tuesday at around 1:30pm after the gun was found by Brac officers following a search at the man’s home. Officials from the RCIPS did not say what led them to searching the man’s property  or what type of gun was recovered.

The news comes in the wake of another case in which five people, including an immigration officer, were arrested in connection with an illegal gun found in Prospect.

A spokesperson said that Collector of Customs Charles Clifford was aware of the enquiry regarding the Brac officer.

CNS contacted Clifford, who stated that he is not directly responsible for customs officers on Cayman Brac as they still report to the district commissioner. Clifford explained that the appointment and reporting arrangements for officers on the Sisiter Islands have been under review since April of this year and he expected to “have the situation regularized in the near future”.

We are now awaiting a response from District Commissioner Ernie Scott.
