(CNS): A cruise ship brought in a dozen more Cuban migrants this weekend after the group was rescued off the coast of Grand Cayman, according to international reports. The Disney Wonder, which called in at George Town on Sunday, picked up the twelve men and women, who were on a makeshift vessel, at around 8pm on Saturday night and took them aboard the luxury ship. The captain handed the group to immigration authorities when the ship arrived in port yesterday morning.

The local authorities are battling to cope with the recent surge in migrants from the neighbouring island. The increase in numbers thought to be fuelled by mounting fears that the softening relationship between Cuba and the US will lead to the removal of the wet foot-dry foot policy, whereby any Cuban who reaches US soil is allowed to remain while those captured off the coast of the US are repatriated.

Government has confirmed that 135 Cuban detainees remain in custody in Cayman currently at the Fairbanks detention centre and in various civic centres around the island. Two Cuban men remain on the run from immigration authorities officials also confirmed Monday, as they warned the public not to approach migrant suspects but to contact the authorities

Government has spent over $1 million dealing with migrants since the start of this financial year and the end total is expected to be much more, by June, as the numbers show no sign of decreasing.

If someone knows some of the names of the cubans, it will be helpful

Naming them might mean people see them like human beings and it is so much easier to depersonalize them so they can be treated inhumanely.

The Americans pick these jokers up on the high seas and cruise into Cuba and drop them off; no problem. They don’t have to wait for a bunch of paperwork to go back and forth.
Unfortunately, we’re a small territory and the Cubans government has never afforded us that efficiency of getting rid of them.
And please – stop using the term ‘asylum seekers’; these are the people who don’t want to miss out on the benefits of the Cuban Adjustment Act and get the free pass into the US like thousands before.
Read the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and see how many sign up for benefits and then go back to Cuba to live. Asylum seekers my a___!!!

The numbers are swelling without any real action to remove the Cubans or legally integrate them into our community. In the meantime a Security Company has contracts to aid or supplement the Guarding of them. There is a lot of money changing hands here once again in the name of Security. This goes in line with the CCTV. Not much bang for the buck.

Send them home now! Tell you what, we let all the Cubans come to Cayman and we go to Cuba. The thugs will soon want their country back.

It seems inappropriate to refer to anyone who is claiming asylum as a “detainee”.

  8. Anonymous says:

why can’t they be flown back to cuba straight away?

  9. Anonymous says:

Put them on a one way cayman airways flight back home and clear out the detention center.
